What happened to lovely decent sized baking potatoes? This is just taking the piss, surely?

I couldn't get to the shop myself so ordered an online delivery. I have been fancying a really nice jacket potato so bought a packet of 'taste the difference' baking spuds.
They've just arrived, 4 in a pack- they're not even as big as my fist! One of them is barely bigger than this small sized egg ffs.
I asked dd earlier in the week to keep an eye out for some if she popped in any supermarket or greengrocers. She couldn't find any and got me a 4pack from lidl, which although tasty were barely bigger than this Sainsburys lot.
Where are all the lovely big spuds?!

Bagged ones are ridiculous, I agree. I used to do one per person but now it has to be two per person. If you can get somewhere that sells them individually you can find bigger ones.

TriggeredByGravy · 12/04/2023 10:45

They are perfect! I couldn't possibly eat one bigger than that 😉

CanYouSeeMeNow · 12/04/2023 10:47

Cornishgem. That's what I did earlier in the week, had two together. Lol.
We used to have a lovely greengrocer nearby but unfortunately they had to shut down. There is a place online you can buy big ones but they only do a big 15kg box or something, that's too many 😂

Not that it helps you but I actually like having 2 smaller ones per person, they cook quicker and are a better size for the kids.

CanYouSeeMeNow · 12/04/2023 10:48

@TriggeredByGravy I knew someone would say that. 😂

I take it that small one is to feed your whole family, bulked out by lentils and a massive salad?

SoupDragon · 12/04/2023 10:48

Have to say that I prefer the smaller ones and always rummage through the box of potatoes in the veg aisle looking for them 😂

I have found that the size of all vegetables has been really variable recently. The sweet potatoes were all giant this week for example and leeks that were really thin one week were huge the next.

MoongazyHare · 12/04/2023 10:48

Hey, there’s this thing called weather. Unless you want lab-grown potatoes, embrace the variation as a small thing that still connects us with nature. I always think smaller ones have better flavour, too.

Anyway, you get more crispy skin if you have two smaller ones rather than a single monster. So you have nothing to complain about.

Wishona · 12/04/2023 10:49

They are a good size to do in a air fryer. My kids make their own for snacks. (When we don’t have much in!)

RNBrie · 12/04/2023 10:49

Sainsburys is THE WORST for decent size baking potatoes. I've stopped even trying to get them there. My kids bloody love a spud so it's really annoying having to shop separately for them!

CanYouSeeMeNow · 12/04/2023 10:50

@MoongazyHare I disagree! I want one big juicy potato thank you very much 😀

I have been doing the smaller ones in the airfryer. I wanted some bigger ones though to just bung in the oven in the day for a few hours while I did stuff. I guess i was reminiscing slightly as that baked potato house smell reminds me of my grandma's house when I was small.

Probably weather related I would imagine.

Yes, one minute cucumbers are tiny too then the next they are as long as your arm 😆

@SoupDragon Sweet potatoes are either tiny or gargantuan. I bought one yesterday that was 800g!

Oh yes, I ordered three leeks too, last week they were about 2" thick, this week I ended up needing about 5 because they were so thin and barely any white bit.

Had the same comment to DH last night.

Only about sweet potatoes in my Hello Fresh box. Sent 6, for 4 people...and they were the same size as eggs. Not impressed at all

DizzyRascal · 12/04/2023 10:57

Basically, you know those past few springs when it has been really dry? And last Summer when it was really really hot? That. Spuds need lots of water. That's why they used to grow so well here and in Ireland. The weather has been really wonky the last few years and it has an affect.
But also: do you really think your children should be eating that many carbs? This is why we have an obesity crisis. Etc.

I agree, it’s nostalgic. I remember picking them out individually as a kid. They were huge.

I did get one from a street baked potato seller recently and it was ginormous.

I wonder if a sack of potatoes would have some big ones…

Don't they just grow bigger and bigger the longer you leave them in though?
I could grow my own about 5/6 years ago so it wasn't much of a problem but I'm unable to do that now.

@DizzyRascal I'm not feeding kids? It's for me and DH.

Don’t say that! That’s a healthy snack in this house 😂
But actually we are all slim/skinny anyway. Not sure about fat layered around my organs though…

@Wishona Oh that's a memory! My parents used to buy a big sack of spuds and keep them out in the coal bunker. (I realise it sounds like I grew up in the 1940s but this was the 1980s). Now in those sweaty little bags, the potatoes are sprouting within 2 days.

Abra1t · 12/04/2023 11:00

Nothing wrong with jacket potato carbs.
