What happened to lovely decent sized baking potatoes? This is just taking the piss, surely?

I couldn't get to the shop myself so ordered an online delivery. I have been fancying a really nice jacket potato so bought a packet of 'taste the difference' baking spuds.
They've just arrived, 4 in a pack- they're not even as big as my fist! One of them is barely bigger than this small sized egg ffs.
I asked dd earlier in the week to keep an eye out for some if she popped in any supermarket or greengrocers. She couldn't find any and got me a 4pack from lidl, which although tasty were barely bigger than this Sainsburys lot.
Where are all the lovely big spuds?!

I wonder if a sack of potatoes would have some big ones…

@Wishona Oh that's a memory! My parents used to buy a big sack of spuds and keep them out in the coal bunker. (I realise it sounds like I grew up in the 1940s but this was the 1980s). Now in those sweaty little bags, the potatoes are sprouting within 2 days.

Well without trying to go one better, our sacks were delivered by a tractor!
They were kept in the garage and I’d be sent out with a bowl to bring some in.

I was kidding I was kidding!😂was just pre-empting the onslaught of mad carb phobes.

@Wishona You can get boxes of big ones delivered but I don't think I'd get through a 15kg box. I could possibly share them out with someone else maybe. Might think about it.
But it would be nice if they were just generally available, because if this farm can produce them then surely supermarkets could them too?

I prefer two small ones, more lovely crispy skin and they cook quicker.

Lidl do loose baking potatoes

Maraudingmarauders · 12/04/2023 11:09

There was a huge issue with the potato crop just gone- drought in particular caused a lot of issues during the growing season. Our fish and chip man said his bags of potatoes had gone from £8 - £20 because there was about 1/3 of the usual crop available and the size was tiny compared to normal.

slowquickstep · 12/04/2023 11:15

Our local chip shop is having a problem getting large potatoes to make the fritters, Haven't been able to buy fritters in months.

Skyeheather · 12/04/2023 11:26

If you look up the recommended portion size for a baked potato, the small potatoes in the bag are the recommended size, around 200 g of potato per person. A jumbo potato is two servings!

@PrincessHoneysuckle
I guess it depends where you are. We have two and dd couldn't find any in either- hence the packet of four she got instead, as mentioned above.

Maybe not if that's all you eat all day? (Which due to me being unwell is in my case)

@Maraudingmarauders Crikey!
@slowquickstep Mmm, I haven't had fritters in donkeys. I wonder if our local chippy does them 🤔

Slightly off track but we were at chessington yesterday and a jacket potato with 2 fillings was £9.90 !! I have been in shock ever since 😂

PinkFootstool · 12/04/2023 11:40

We buy bigger ones individually at a local fruit and veg shop / farm shop wannabe, but even they have had smaller spuds this last year or so.

Are they being picked earlier due a lack of available people? Or growing conditions not up to scratch? ie too hot in summer, too wet in winter? I've no idea when or what they need to grow 😂

I take it that small one is to feed your whole family, bulked out by lentils and a massive salad?

It also goes with the long-lasting MN roast chicken.

Mykittensmittens · 12/04/2023 12:27

I’m craving a fritter now. A nice crispy greasy one, with salt, in a bread roll.

carb heaven !!!!

TollgateDebs · 12/04/2023 12:31

I prefer smaller, as I like the skin and it does depend on the variety. I'd just have two! Certainly no problem buying the larger varieties, I just think for bag weights / fit into the bag, that it is easier to hit the mark with four smaller pots!
