Sainsburys beef mince...

.... the new vacuum packaging is awful. The meat is reduced to a sludge that is difficult to break up when cooking.
I got a refund, & Customer Services said they'd had a lot of complaints.
I suggest we all boycott it.

Sainsbury's defends vac-pack mince after complaints

The store printed leaflets after complaints that its new eco-friendly packs turned the meat to mush.

Honestly, the fuss! It's the same meat in different packaging. How can people get in such a tizz about it?

Because it's not the same! The texture etc is completely different.

countvoncount · 06/04/2023 14:42

Used it yesterday to make tacos....absolutely fine

LadyWithLapdog · 06/04/2023 14:50

A small change which shouldn’t take too much getting used to. Well done Sainsbury’s for trying to make a dent in wasteful packaging.

AllotmentTime · 06/04/2023 15:01

Ugh yeah was not happy with this first time. I’ll be trying to break it up out of the packet pre-cooking I think, as it came out lumpy like meatballs trying to do that in the pan.

Less packaging is a good thing though so I’m prepared to try…

fancyfrogs · 06/04/2023 15:02

It doesn't bother me at all. Have had Gousto mince like that before. Have used the sainsburys one to make bolognese, chilli and burgers so far. Literally absolutely fine, didn't find it as horrendously challenging to break up as some claim

HarrietSchulenberg · 06/04/2023 15:04

I've used it twice and seen no difference other than that the colour is darker in the packaging.

BugLight · 06/04/2023 15:59

like Itsgot I buy frozen direct from farm & it’s vacuum sealed in thinnish plastic all over

pics of sainsbury’s look wild different to what I get though as mine still retains the visible ‘strands’ of mince, even in the packaging, but S’s looks more paste-like

is it the harder plastic on the bottom of their packaging that ‘mushes’ the mince down into more of a paste?

or does it look more mince-like once opened/cooked?

lemonyellows · 06/04/2023 16:25

It was fine. Not sure what the fuss is about

SirChenjins · 06/04/2023 16:29

I've given up on it, it was a nightmare to break up and cook with - I'm not sure that Sainsbury's using a bit less plastic in one of their containers is really going to solve the world's problem, even if it's baby steps, so I now buy my mince from Aldi.

mnisannoyingAF · 06/04/2023 16:49

Our kosher mince has always been like this

cocksstrideintheevening · 06/04/2023 16:51

I can't get past the look of it. I'm now getting my mince from the butcher.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/04/2023 17:05

I cooked some yesterday. It was absolutely fine and broke down when cooking.

DPotter · 06/04/2023 17:15

I've seen comments in other places - frankly I don't see what the problem is. The packaging takes up much less space when recycling. All good as far as I can see

FurryBoots99 · 06/04/2023 17:17

I’ve used it, I’m about to use it again now and I have no issues with it. Good on them

piefacedClique · 06/04/2023 17:23

I preferred it. I hate lumps of mince in a bolognese.

Georgyporky · 06/04/2023 17:31

To those in favour of it, you do realise that as flexible plastic is used, the packs are not accepted in most councils’ kerbside bins and must be taken to specialist collection points - or in the black bin & then to landfill.

It's a bit weird to look at but I'm down with anything that reduces plastic. Tastes fine

DumbPrinceAndHisStupidWife · 06/04/2023 17:40

Of all the packaging they could try and reduce, why this? I hate it when meat isn't packaged well, it feels unhygienic. And indeed it was when the crappy packaging resulted in the turkey leaking blood everywhere last Xmas.

Packaging should always be minimal (wtf is toothpaste in cardboard boxes?!) but I really hate it when meat packaging is too flimsy or it turns mince into mush!

iLiveALifeOfSin · 06/04/2023 21:57

MuttsNutts · 06/04/2023 10:34

I’ve used it. It’s fine.

The uproar it has created demonstrates exactly why the planet is fucked. Even the smallest change to people’s norms, in this case to reduce excessive plastic waste, demonstrates that people don’t realise or aren’t interested in changing anything that has even the tiniest impact on their lives.

This

I'm autistic so I don't cope well with change. I also have serious food issues as a result which means if it doesn't look the way it 'should' I am not eating it.

A significant change will be made though as I am likely to use a butcher over Sainsbury's for mince, which means even less plastic waste.

Maybe if the stores haven't all closed their meat counters...

Try frozen mince.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 06/04/2023 22:10

It's absolutely fine - don't know why people are getting her up about this. I just break it up in the same way that I used to break up the mince in the other packs. I like it! It takes up less room in the freezer.

JamNittyGritty · 06/04/2023 22:11

I used it, maybe took a bit more effort ti break it up fully but was fine. Doesn’t look the most appealing but the massive reduction in plastic packaging the switch to this has meant makes it very very worth it.

lsanny · 06/04/2023 22:12

@CheekyRascals

Try frozen mince.

Thanks but I don't use frozen foods. I'm happy to buy fresh.

Mumped · 06/04/2023 22:16

It looks really odd. It was red and properly minced, now it’s dark purple and like sludge. How food looks DOES affect how you feel about it. And this looks unappealing.
