How to serve egg noddles to toddler

Odile13 · 20/02/2023 16:38

My 3 year old DD is quite a fussy eater. She likes very simple things like pasta with soft cheese stirred through. She doesn’t like sauces or vegetables mixed into meals (I serve them on the side).

I want to try giving her egg noddles but we don’t normally eat them so I’m not sure what is the best way to do it. Would you just give her plain noodles or add a little soy sauce? Are there any really simple ways to serve noodles that others use for fussy toddlers?

Any suggestions appreciated!

Following with interest!

Sweet and sour sauce always goes down well with the children I look after.

MrsBunnyEars · 20/02/2023 16:42

DD eats this a lot. I don’t add soy (very salty), but she has plain noodles with cooked chicken and veg.

Often the veg is raw (peppers especially, sometimes carrots) as it’s easier and she prefers it, and sometimes she has tofu strips rather than chicken.

Not the most interesting or authentic, but she loves it!

Odile13 · 20/02/2023 16:43

@NannyR Thanks - I could try giving her that on the side or maybe stir through a small amount to give flavour.

Mine have it plain or with a little butter; i cut them up for my 3 year old though as otherwise he struggles with them going down his throat when there are long bits

DraconianDen · 20/02/2023 16:44

My fussy 3 year old likes them with a really simple sauce made of garlic purée, soy sauce, honey and a bit of Chinese 5 spice (I don’t measure anything, just chuck it in!). You can’t really see it so it’s perfect to add a little taste for children who don’t like sauces!

Duttercup · 20/02/2023 16:45

Mine likes them with a bit of soy and peanut butter mixed together , like a very lazy satay

Odile13 · 20/02/2023 16:48

@MrsBunnyEars Thanks - yes, I was concerned about the saltiness of soy sauce. Unfortunately she won’t eat any vegetables like this at the moment (I feel a bit embarrassed admitting that) but will have cucumber and avocado on the side. I will look into tofu strips as that would be something new to try.

We love Annabel Karmel's Mummy's Pot Noodle recipe. It is really simple. We make it with just the sauce and leave the 'bits' out for the days when my two are feeling particularly fussy. If you Google Mummy's Pot Noodle it comes up straight away.

Odile13 · 20/02/2023 16:51

@Lkydfju Thanks - I might try them plain first to see if she is interested in trying them.

@DraconianDen Thanks - that sounds delicious - I would like that!

@Duttercup Thanks - DD likes peanut butter so that could work.

This is a pic of wagamama kids menu but my kids liked how it was served in separate piles like this. The noodles in the pic look plain to me.
My kids liked a sweet sauce like teriyaki

How about stirring some butter through? Stops them sticking and clumping, makes them easy to suck up, sounds like she's having veg, fats, and protein on the side so a good full meal 👍

Odile13 · 20/02/2023 16:56

@PricklyMonkey Thanks - I will Google that. Really appreciate the help. I have tried so many things lately that get rejected that I’m almost burned out on it all.

II wouldn’t worry about the salt content of a little splash of soy sauce if her general salt intake is low and it’s not a meal she’s eating daily. We need salts, just buy the low sodium version.

geraniumsrojo · 20/02/2023 17:00

Melted butter and pepper.

Or

Peanut butter (the 100% peanut stuff).

Odile13 · 20/02/2023 17:02

@PeekAtYou Thanks for the pic. Great inspiration and I like the different piles.

@itchyhand Thanks - you’re right!

@BertHandsome Thanks - that’s true. I do keep an eye on salt so it should be fine occasionally.

I’m off to make tonight’s dinner now but really appreciate all the ideas. Lots to think about!

Im interested - if you offer veggies and she refuses to entertain the idea of eating them, do you offer an alternative?

Key thing I would be sure to do with noodles is make sure they arent too long. I had an awful choking experience recently when I ate stir fry with noodles (a long bit got stuck)

20viona · 20/02/2023 17:09

Noodles and butter 🤮

My 3 year old loves a stir fry and I use chow mein sauce, oyster and spring onion or hoi sin. Basically anything not spicy. She loves water chestnuts and baby corn in there too!

maddiemookins16mum · 20/02/2023 17:21

Peanut butter, chopped broccoli and sweetcorn.

GreenTeaTuesdays · 20/02/2023 17:21

You can get coconut powder - mix a little bit with water to make coconut milk and stir that through!

Mine likes them with a bit of soy and peanut butter mixed together , like a very lazy satay

I do this, but add a squeeze of lime juice too. 3 yo DS is a fussy bugger at the moment but he loves this.

Geranium1984 · 20/02/2023 17:48

My son loves noodles (2.5yo) i do udon or med egg noodles. Once boiled i fry in a little Sesame oil and add a bit of soy sauce.
Sometimes I buy Chinese marinated chicken from the butcher so will cut that up finely and it adds a bit of flavour.
Or we often fry with ginger, garlic and a bit of soy.
He likes egg fried rice too.

Geranium1984 · 20/02/2023 17:48

Or just seen satay suggested, we do this, peanut butter and coconut milk.

Matilda1981 · 20/02/2023 17:50

Mine have noodles with a honey/sesame oil and soy sauce mix - I do it with chicken and veg (baby corn, broccoli, peas), marinate the chicken for a few minutes before cooking.

CottonSock · 20/02/2023 17:59

I cook in a chicken stock cube and add frozen sweetcorn. Oldest gets cooked chicken added, youngest too fussy. Ala chicken noodle soup. They love it.
If I'm having it I add soy, coriander and spring onion.
