Low fat but high protein salads - that dont include bloody chicken, chickpeas or tuna

bellac11 · 29/01/2023 16:23

Yes its a long shot but I need to really up my protein, I thought I was having enough but having seen the offical calculation on another thread (your weight x .8) Ive realised Im not having anywhere near enough

But Im not mega keen on chicken although I have been having mainly chicken salads, sick to death of it now. Tuna I like it, but theres only so many times you can have a tuna salad. I cant stand chickpeas in anything other than hummous and really dont like those trendy green bean pea things.

I know Im limiting my options but what other ideas have people got. Needs to be fairly low fat so I cant put a chunk of steak on, I dont really like pork but do eat the odd bit of ham, I did today but couldnt do it every day

I dont really eat bread or starchy carbs etc (well I try not to)

They are, but the OP has to follow a special diet in the run up to an operation or other procedure, I assume, to make sure blood tests come back in the right ranges. That's what I've assumed, anyway.

Yes very similar to that, exactly. Its not about whats good for me, it has to be certain things

I cant have olives or avocado for example. Shame

Or nuts

Thank god its only temporary.

Quorn pieces/slices are low in fat and high in protein

Howmanysleepsnow · 29/01/2023 18:06

Smoked haddock with capers and a dressing of yoghurt and horse radish (add a little water to loosen)
prawns/ mussels/ crayfish with chilli and mango if you’re allowed fruit.
Smoked salmon? Crab? Minced chicken cooked with spices might seem different to regular cooked chicken? Could make tzatziki with skyr/ cucumber/ chopped mint and a bit of garlic. Houmous/ tzatziki and chopped veg as a change from salad maybe?

ANewDayDawned · 29/01/2023 18:09

Tofu, you can dust it in corn flour and seasoning and bake until crispy. Add sweet chilli sauce to the salad

Doidontimmm · 29/01/2023 18:09

Flavoured Protein powder in quark on crushed weetabix with banana as a dessert?

bellac11 · 29/01/2023 18:17

I might try mincing up the chicken that is a good idea, I can make little pretend thai patties.

Cant use sweet chilli sauce unfortunately

I also have to be careful with tomatoes, they count as a fruit and I can have one portion of fruit a day.

To be honest with all those restrictions I'd probably just stick with chicken and tuna for the next couple of weeks. Vary things by flavouring your chicken differently, use different spice rubs, harrisa, ras el hanout, Cajun, lemon juice, garlic, paprika, herbs, spices, flavoured vinegars. Add pickled veg, use different leaf bases, add peppers, different onions, celery, cucumber, peppers, carrots, watercress. Is beetroot too high carb? If it's to take to work could you get a food flask so you could have hot options too?

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 29/01/2023 18:49

You could try banh mi (Vietnamese) or larb (Thai) style spicy salads made with either chicken/turkey mince or maybe even the lowest fat pork mince you could get your hands on.

VerbenaGirl · 29/01/2023 18:52

Lentil, sweet potato and a couple of walnuts crumbled up.

Mammyloveswine · 29/01/2023 19:02

Salmon..sea bass... prawns..seafood sticks... crab..turkey..lean bacon/ham...beef.. quorn...

Georgyporky · 29/01/2023 19:03

Have you not been referred to a dietician as it's apparently a medical necessity ?

Grimchmas · 29/01/2023 19:10

Do you like other beans and pulses? Do you have access to a microwave to heat it up?

I used to have cottage cheese with salady-bits in a tupperware for lunches. Cucumber, peppers, sweetcorn, etc. Nice with bits of ham mixed in too.

Have you had a look at cold cuts of meat in the supermarket for inspiration? Beef, various types of ham, chicken, turkey, pastrami are all lean if you cut off any visible fat and would help ring the changes.

Would red lentil pasta fit your food plan? It's 100% red lentils, nothing else, but it is nicer then eating lentils iyswim!

If you can reheat things at work, or have a food flask how about a vegetable soup or curry? Add meat or fish if desired.

mackthepony · 29/01/2023 19:13

Homemade soup in a flask?

Yes Ive got other meat optios for other meals, like breakfast and dinner, but lunches I dont want something too complicated to prepare in the morning, too boring and outside what I can have

Beans and lentils are too high in carbs.

Lidl do a very good gravlax and can you eat lamb as this recipe is very good
www.nigella.com/recipes/warm-shredded-lamb-salad-with-mint-and-pomegranate
You would need to pick a lower fat breed such as Hebridean/shetland/north Ronaldsay ideally. Might get away with swaledale or herdwick

Homemade soup in a flask?

Yes I was having soup but this is what changed my mind to salads because I couldnt get enough protein in the soup without making it essentially a chicken (again) casserole/stew type thing.

Halloumi kebabs on skewers with salad?

Kidney beans?

QuestionableMouse · 29/01/2023 19:22

What about turkey or mushrooms? Lean beef might be worth a try too. Milk is good too, if you can have it.

titchy · 29/01/2023 19:25

You could do steak and roast veg and put into a flask. Or some sort of beef stew or curry. Doesn't have to just be for soup!

Bunce1 · 29/01/2023 19:25

You can whip cottage cheese with oregano, lemon zest and garlic and it’s quite delicious with crudités.

green lentils with roasted carrots, rocket and a dollop of the whipped cheese is delicious.

QuestionableMouse · 29/01/2023 19:27

healthyfitnessmeals.com/easy-beef-stir-fry/ is lovely if you can eat all the ingredients. It's still nice cold too.

Yes, love mushrooms, they're ok in terms of protein but only as a few grams more, not the protein part of the meal, they're in most meals Im eating at the moment

Milk is quite high in carbs overall and a bit..... milky!!

An approximation of that could be an idea, I cant have the honey, oil or corn in that one.

Prawn fajita salad.

baby gem lettuce, king prawns sautéed with Cajun seasoning, sautéed peppers and onions, soured cream and grated cheese. Add salsa if you like (I’m allergic to tomatoes). Use low fat sour cream and cheese if you must. Eat lean cheese isn’t bad and higher protein than others.
