Low fat but high protein salads - that dont include bloody chicken, chickpeas or tuna

bellac11 · 29/01/2023 16:23

Yes its a long shot but I need to really up my protein, I thought I was having enough but having seen the offical calculation on another thread (your weight x .8) Ive realised Im not having anywhere near enough

But Im not mega keen on chicken although I have been having mainly chicken salads, sick to death of it now. Tuna I like it, but theres only so many times you can have a tuna salad. I cant stand chickpeas in anything other than hummous and really dont like those trendy green bean pea things.

I know Im limiting my options but what other ideas have people got. Needs to be fairly low fat so I cant put a chunk of steak on, I dont really like pork but do eat the odd bit of ham, I did today but couldnt do it every day

I dont really eat bread or starchy carbs etc (well I try not to)

Tofu, tempeh, eggs, sardines, salmon, mackerel, cottage cheese, turkey. thank

GoEasySqueezy · 29/01/2023 16:27

Quinoa?

Elodie09 · 29/01/2023 16:28

Low fat feta with olives etc or cottage cheese?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/01/2023 16:28

Nuts, lentils, beans, seeds, cheese (cottage cheese, Quark - paneer? don't know how calorific/fatty that is).

If you are trying to keep carbs and fat low, you're going to struggle, aren't you?

WashAsDelicates · 29/01/2023 16:29

Egg salad?

Add prawns to salad.

Add cheese to or alongside salad, don't have to be feta, could be cubes of Cheddar or a pot of cottage, or any other cheese, really.

Coleslaw with peanuts added is lush.

bellac11 · 29/01/2023 16:29

Thanks

I have to eat eggs every morning so they are out. The oily fish options are too high in fat for what I need.

I will admit Ive never got on with tofu.

Im only allowed very low fat cottage cheese which I refuse to eat, its horrible. But I would easily eat a whole tub of Longley Farm normal cottage cheese. Alas I cant have it

Oh dear, medical reasons. Have you had access to an NHS dietician? It can't be easy to work this out.

Its only for 2 weeks, I am really struggling, its medically needed for an operation.

Cant have nuts, too high in fat. Cheese too high in fat.

Its only for 2 weeks more but Im sick of bloody chicken salad already

I think I will end up never eating chicken again at this rate

Prawns are a good call for whoever mentioned them

I blend flavourless protein powder into quark or similar with paprika and garlic powder, bit of seasonings and use as a dressing.

bellac11 · 29/01/2023 16:33

Actually Ive just remembered I could have fish sticks, not the most healthy but tasty.

Prawns
squid
crab

catfunk · 29/01/2023 16:34

My favourites are green leaves topped with lentils with sun dried toms and olives mixed in with feta crumbles on top.

Or a black bean, avo, sweetcorn, red onion and coriander salad with lime

Does it have to be salads? Could you roast a load of med veg? Peppers, courgettes, onions, etc with cous cous. With garlic and parsley prawn skewers.

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 29/01/2023 16:34

Lentils?
This M&S quinoa and nut one is great: you could try to recreate it. Worth trying all the Pret/Waitrose/M&S off the shelf salads and then nicking ideas from the ones you like.

That's a good idea. My husband and son both add whey powder to their morning cereal/muesli. My husband mixes his with soya milk and 0% Greek yoghourt. He buys the whey powder from Decathlon as it's the cheapest and also the least messed about with.

Doesnt strictly have to be a salad but its something easy to take, carry and eat at work given that I dont eat, but cant have sandwiches anyway

I dont eat couscous but the prawns are good. Im having similar tonight without the couscous, roasted veg and a cod fillet

I made a nice salad the other day of fresh spinach, grilled crispy bacon, pear, heritage tomatoes and brazil nuts.

You could also do lambs lettuce with toasted walnuts, burrata cheese, finely sliced fennel and blood oranges or pink grapefruit

or soft boiled eggs with little gem lettuce, olives, steamed green beans,

feta cheese with pine nuts, watermelon and watercress

Looks nice but too high in fat for the calorie ratio and far too high in calories for the whole pack.

however I like the idea so might look to experiment

Have white fish. Seared Cajun spiced cod or something.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/01/2023 17:17

At home, rather than at work, could you have a fish soup? All sorts of fish and shellfish, in a tomato-based very liquid sauce, with plenty of garlic, lemon and parsley.

IheardYouButDontWantToAnswer · 29/01/2023 17:20

Salmon, sardines, trout, mackerel, and pilchards are all good protein, and fish oils are good for you.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/01/2023 17:25

They are, but the OP has to follow a special diet in the run up to an operation or other procedure, I assume, to make sure blood tests come back in the right ranges. That's what I've assumed, anyway.
