Baked potatoes in an air fryer?

Shufflebumnessie · 25/01/2023 14:23

I'm very new to the world of air fryers and just starting to experiment.
I found instructions for baking potatoes (starting basic) - 5 mins in the microwave, rub on oil/salt, 9 mins at 200 in the air fryer, turn over and cook for another 9 mins.
However, after the first 9 minutes my potato was done (in fact, it was half way to the skin being rock solid!!).

How do you cook your potatoes? Do I need to microwave first? Reduce the temperature?
Also do you heat up your air fryer first or just put the food in when it's cold and let it warm up with the food in there?
Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks

Wouldn't it depend on the size of the potato?

Yesthatismychildsigh · 25/01/2023 14:28

There’s no exact timings, depends on the type and size of potato. You’ll get used to it. I start in the microwave as you do, oil, then just cook on highest until skin is crispy. You’ll get to know your air fryer very quickly, I promise.

I can never be bothered with microwave first. In the air fryer, 4 good sized jackets take about 45 minutes. Not quick, but quicker than the oven.

I don't usually pre-heat although mine does recommend it. It doesn't seem necessary as it heats so quickly.

I microwave them until the potato is just cooked. Then baste with oil, boullion, paprika, and air fry for about 5 minutes at 220. Fluffy inside, crispy outside, perfect.

But microwaving does help with fuel economy, which is important for a lot of people now. I’m just greedy and want them faster.

@Yesthatismychildsigh you're right.

I think one of the benefits of a jacket for me is I stick in oven and ignore. But I should reconsider. We don't have them often actually but I've been thinking that with DS in year 7 now, a jacket potato with beans/cheese is a really good post-school meal and microwave and air fryer would make it a LOT quicker and something he could do himself and still be eating within a few minutes of getting home. He eats a lot of cereal and bread currently and I'd love him to eat more potatoes and also have something hot.

And, as you say, cost effective!

If you microwave - do you just prick and stick in the microwave? My mum always put them on pieces of kitchen towel but not sure if that's necessary?

Oil and a bit of seasoning. Then 140c for 1 hour. They will be crispy and fluffy in the middle

I put them on a plate, sometimes they can leak slightly.

I’m also right on the greedy 😂

DS is late home as I think he had detention. You've inspired me - I think I have some potatoes so going to go get one started for him in the microwave, then air fryer when he turns up!

Overreactionpossibly · 25/01/2023 15:25

I am really lazy so I wrap in foil and put in the slow cooker on low in the morning. Then I finish them off in the air fryer for 5 minutes before eating them.

ARoughRide · 25/01/2023 15:26

I always have to microwave first for several mins and then stick it in the air fryer but I don’t oil the skin. Maybe that’s why it goes so hard?

KangarooKenny · 25/01/2023 15:27

I really rate the frozen McCain ones 😋

doodleygirl · 25/01/2023 15:30

Medium potato, microwave for about 4 mins, 200 in Air Fryer, 20-25 mins. I don’t use oil, very crispy and delicious

SpaceOP · 25/01/2023 15:46

So 5 minute sin microwave, 10 minute in air fryer and not bad. They aren't proper baking potatoes so I did 4 smaller ones. I think proper jacket potatoes will be better. Adding to my shopping list for future!

You've converted me @Yesthatismychildsigh

SpaceOP · 25/01/2023 15:48

Also, DS says thanks! Grin

Nice to hear. Enjoy!

Thank you for all the information. I gave it another go and was more successful 🙂

Two large potatoes - microwave 10-15 mins depending on just how large.

Airfry 20 -25 mins

I scoop mash with grated cheese and fill - 3 -5 mins on max crisp.

This is about what I do except in run them in olive oil and salt after the microwave. End up delicious.

Soozikinzii · 28/01/2023 10:21

I prick 2 potatoes put in microwave for 10 minutes . Then transfer to air fryer spray with oil and rub with a bit of salt and crisp for 10 mins . Sometimes less depending on size of potatoes. Perfect !

Yesthatismychildsigh · 28/01/2023 12:18

Before I got an air fryer I used to microwave then crisp under the grill.

Starpop · 28/01/2023 13:03

I do them for 5 mins in the microwave, turn them 5 more minutes then into the air fryer for 10 minutes. They come out like they've been baked in the oven but used far less energy and time
