Kenwood or KitchenAid

I’m looking to splurge on a food mixer this season but I keep going back and forth between the KitchenAid Artisan or the Kenwood Chef. I need a food mixer for baking cakes, biscuit batter and kneading dough, almost every week but not in massive quantities. Just something simple and reliable - no need for too many attachments either.

Just trying to avoid spending money on something that is seemingly really popular, with rave reviews, but disappointing performance.

I have my mums Kenwood Chef , which is at least 50 years old, and still going strong. It’s not pretty but it stays in a cupboard.

bosch mum

great option of attachments and very functional and doesn't take up a lot of space (I find the kitchen aid too clunky tbh)

PretLea · 19/12/2022 13:57

@Timeforachangeisitnot my mum also has a Kenwood Chef she’s had since she got married, and still going. Just wondering if the new ones are as durable/good.

@greenacrylicpaint will have a look, thanks for recommending. Not familiar with the brand at all, but recently got a kettle from them which has been a good buy.

We have had both.
Kenwood in UK and Kitchen Aid in USA.
Kitchen aid is much prettier but I think the Kenwood did a better job of actually mixing stuff.
I find the kitchen aid isn't as good at getting the edges incorporated.

LadyLaLaa · 19/12/2022 14:12

I have both.
I've had my kenwood for 40 years so far!
I use that for chopping, mixing and general stuff but I use my Artisan for cake batter / buttercream mixing and pizza&bread doughs.

PretLea · 19/12/2022 14:20

@endlesswinter thanks for this, maybe learning more towards the kenwood…

@LadyLaLaa have you found the KitchenAid copes well with dough and heavy batters?

Then there is also the Kenwood KMix, which seems really popular in the UK too?

I have a Kenwood, still going strong after 15 years. Don't get a white one as the colour turns yellow very quickly - I keep mine on the cupboard.

LadyLaLaa · 19/12/2022 14:24

I find it does dough very well. I'm unable to knead it by hand so rely on it and have never had any problems.

LadyLaLaa · 19/12/2022 14:25
  • batters have never been an issue as long as you use the beater not the whisk attachment.
QueenOfWeeds · 19/12/2022 14:34

Kenwood for power/substance, Kitchen Aid for style (in my experience). A quick look on the John Lewis website for comparison
Kenwood K Mix - 5l bowl, 1000W power
Kenwood chef (the cheapest one) - 4.6l bowl, 1000W power
Kitchen Aid - 4.8 and 3l bowls, 300W power

money/space no object, I would have a pretty kitchen aid on display, and a top spec Kenwood Chef tucked away somewhere (utility/butler’s pantry type set up).

I have a Kmix and it's great. Had it for five years and no regrets. Very nearly bought a kitchen aid but having seen them both in person the Kmix won me over. The kitchen aid was more expensive and didn't seem to be any better than the Kmix. I use my Kmix all the time, wouldn't be without it now.

PretLea · 19/12/2022 14:45

Thanks everyone for your input. Money isn’t a real issue but space is, so will need to invest in only one (to possibly store in cupboard). The KitchenAid is really stylish but just need something that works well (and won’t need replacing anytime soon). Learning towards Kenwood, but now Chef or KMix. Thanks @Blondeissimo for your message on this.

I have a KitchenAid and it's my favourite thing in the kitchen, including our newish ninja foodi.

I make bread and pizza dough with no problems, cake batters and buttercream icing are great, although like pp I do get a bit left on the bottom that needs scraping in. I've tried to adjust it so might just have done a bad job of it. Beater with rubber edge is best for cake batter.

endlesswinter · 19/12/2022 15:31

I will say I've had my kitchen aid five years now and it is lasting fine so I don't think that is an issue.

PretLea · 19/12/2022 17:50

@UniversalTruth @endlesswinter you’ve made this no easier 😂

I have a k mix and it doesn't quite get the mixture off the bottom.
I tried to lower the blade slightly but couldn't work out how to do it.
Otherwise I love it.

BambooForDinnerAgain · 19/12/2022 17:57

I have a KitchenAid which gets some fairly hard use, and has been very reliable. Pros are - good at kneading and whisking, even with small quantities; you can get some brilliant attachments, including ice cream and pasta maker; looks good on the worktop.
Cons- it’s very heavy, so lives on the worktop all the time; the cake whisk doesn’t quite reach the sides properly; the price!

ElizabethEccentricity · 19/12/2022 17:58

I've got both 😑, the Kitchen Aid was a gift from my then in laws.

I bought myself a Kenwood Chef Titanium a couple of years later because I didn't rate the KA enough to invest in the gadgets. The Chef wins hands down. Absolute workhorse that does everything.

It's really easy to tweak the height of the tools. My Kmix came with a spanner to do this but any spanner that fits will do it. See page 10 in the attached for how to do it.

cloverleafy · 19/12/2022 19:45

I have a Kmix I love and we use lots. It doesn't do all the processor type things some of the Chef models can though.

My solution is Bamix and KMix. Between them they do everything.

endlesswinter · 19/12/2022 19:46

Sorry OP.
For what it is worth if I had to pick I would choose a Kenwood.

stclair · 19/12/2022 20:26

I’ve had a Kenwood kmix for about 8 years which I’ve been very happy with. But I do agree the KitchenAid is prettier

paintitallover · 20/12/2022 07:52

I also have the Kenwood and wish I'd bought the kitchenaid.
