We're having salmon steaks and I thought it might go, but never actually cooked one. Any ideas?

You could finely slice it and stir fry it with little cubes of bacon.

Flier · 24/01/2008 16:25

i did this at christmas time and loved it:-

braised red cabbage

1 sml red cabbage, shredded
1 red onion, chopped
2 pears, chopped and peeled
1 tbsp light muscovado sugar
4 tbsp balsamic vinegar
3 tbsp red wine

put all ingreds in a large pan
cover cook gently on low heat for 40mins stirring from time to time

SputnikEnRegalia · 24/01/2008 16:29

Flier that sounds delicious and I have all those ingredients.

Probably good with bacon too, but we're (fish eating) vegetarians. Would you put soy-sauce with that?

I just made coleslaw with a red cabbage, and it is so good ds and I were eating it out of the bowl with a spoon {blush]

we used grated carrot, finely sliced red cabbage, raisins, sunflower seeds and a good dollop of mayonnaise (well several dollops...) but you can leave the fruit and seeds out if that doesn't appeal. Good dash of salt and pepper to taste. Lovely and especially nice in a bun with a burger.

FrannyandZooey · 24/01/2008 16:34

a veggie burger of course

Ohhh Nigella recipe essentially the same as Fliers except apples instead of pears. Delicious and Nigella comments that it goes particularly well with salmon.

SputnikEnRegalia · 24/01/2008 16:46

I just knew it would be a good combination with salmon!

I might have to go back and buy another one to make coleslaw with now.

I don't know why it is so much nicer with red cabbage. It is prettier as well

We eat this often as a salad in the winter. Half a red cabbage, finely sliced, a handful or two of walnuts and a couple of diced apples. You can add a little onion or spring onion as well. Make a strong vinagrette to mix in and make the salad up a couple of hours before you eat it. Yum.

HollyGoHeavily · 24/01/2008 16:58

word of warning - don't make soup. I made soup with a red cabbage and it went a nasty shade of purple!!

Cabbage soup of any colour doesn't appeal somehow. Think I'll go with the braised idea, then get another one to try the salad/coleslaw option.

FioFio, is that red cabbage in general or just in soup? [worried]

My french mil uses red cabbage leaves to dye boiled eggs a pretty colour....

ggglimhoho · 24/01/2008 17:08

Red cabbage in general is windy. Avoid if breastfeeding

singingmum · 24/01/2008 17:09

Boil in water and use the water as an acid alkali tester(tounge in cheek)

My Arabic MIL uses onion skins to dye eggs (at easter). Must be a MIL thing.
