Just that really. I've never really had a sweet tooth but just recently I've been craving cake! I've not bought cakes for years. What is your favourite shop bought cake or sweet treat?

To be honest it's completely down to personal tase and preference. . My favourite is Bakewell tart - either a slice of a large one or also like the little individual tarts. But I love all cakes and have to avoid the cake aisle!

Ooo lemon drizzle

WhoWasThatMaskedWoman · 19/09/2022 22:34

Cinnamon buns, ideally from Ole & Steen

Sadly discontinued (or at least I haven't seen it in 10 years) - Waitrose used to do a pear cake with chocolate. It was a light sponge with pieces of pear and chunks of chocolate. Absolutely divine! And it was a proper big size too.

I saw a different attempt they did but it was a tart with quarters of pears and chocolate drizzle - not impressed.

No other supermarket cake tastes good.

Otherwise French patisserie type of shops do offer nice choices (bit pricey but lovely).

You probably don't wantbto hear this but it best to hsve a bash at making your own. Much nicer. If u like fruit cake I have a fool proof easy recipe. U can slice and freeze it

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 19/09/2022 22:39

Farmhouse slices - glorious!

PAFMO · 19/09/2022 22:39

Morrisons used to do a marzipan thing with sponge and cream on the inside. My god it was good. You bought it by the slice from their cake/deli bit.

RampantIvy · 19/09/2022 22:43

M an d S.
I'm a competent baker and find most commercial, mass produced cakes too artificial and sickly tasting, but I won't say no to an M and S cake.

IMO Mr Kipling cakes are the most sickly cakes I have tatsed.

I tend to make my own cake, but I do love Co-Ops Yorkshire Parkin. I've tried dozens of recipes but dammit, none of them are as good as that shop bought one!

Good shop bought cake is an oxymoron! I’m a baker and sometimes crave a cake I haven’t had to make, but it’s always a disappointment! I’d pop to a local food market or indie bakery and buy some small-batch made cakes or brownies. There’s so many great local bakers near me whose produce is so much nicer than supermarket cakes. Support a small business and do your taste buds a favour!

recklessgran · 19/09/2022 22:57

If I need to buy shop bought cakes then I buy the fresh cream ones - always acceptable in this house!

activediscussions · 19/09/2022 23:03

The ginger cake / pudding in a green packet

Tangerine32 · 20/09/2022 00:47

The M&S coffee Swiss roll or the M&S fresh cream Victoria sandwich (from the fridge section). Other supermarkets also usually do a version of the fresh cream Victoria sponge, but I think the M&S one is the nicest. I also like a Mr Kipling Manor House and the Taste the Difference coffee cake from Sainsbury’s.

Parkin is easy but proper parkin needs treacle, lard and butter. Avoid wimpy recipes that shy away from these essential ingredients. It is meant to be calorific and keep you warm on winter afternoons on Ilkley moor.

Dontsparethehorses · 20/09/2022 01:50

M&S lemon and blueberry fresh cake is a thing of pure joy 😋

Also the type of oatmeal is so hard to get!

kateandme · 20/09/2022 05:35

Op cpuld you make your own? Even a little bit sponge or cupcakes? I promise they are easy and quick.and so much tastier.
Shop bought cakes are such let down

M&S cake in a jar. The food of the devil. So damn good

Is it? I use Delia Smith's recipe for parkin and it uses medium oatmeal, which I've never had any trouble getting. It's a very good recipe, but doesn't include lard! I have no aversion to lard - always use it in shortcrust pastry, half and half with butter, unless I'm going to be feeding vegetarians.

I also usually make my own cakes if we're going to have cake, but McVitie's ginger cake is good. Staying with my parents at the moment and my Mum bought a pack of Mr Kipling's Fondant Fancies. It may be decades since I last had those before. God knows what's in them but I enjoyed them!

vroom321 · 20/09/2022 06:42

Costco Red Velvet 😋

wibblewobbleball · 20/09/2022 06:46

Goodness sake - the OP is asking for shop bought and everyone is suggesting she makes her own Confused standard Mumsnet. OP if I am after a cake hit I always go chocolate fudge cake as it always hits the spot!! whereas a shop bought Victoria sponge can be hit or miss.

dudsville · 20/09/2022 06:53

I can confirm this is down to personal taste. In early lockdown I collected the same cake from a variety of sources and we did a blind tasting. The results clearly showed that I have good taste and my partner does not.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/09/2022 07:03

Bosh! Lemon drizzle from Tesco is very homemade tasting.

Sainsburys have a bakery and they do some lovely cakes and pastries. Their apple and fresh cream turnover is way better than any others I’ve tasted. Ooh, or if you’re looking for a pastry, Lidl have a bakery that’s filled with lovely fresh baked croissants, pains au chocolat/raisin, and those lovely round buns that look like boobs.
