What do you bring if you are asked to "Bring a salad"?

I must admit I am normally the one who jumps in and offers to "bring pudding" however I have been allocated "bring salad" for a dinner this weekend. So....what would you usually make that would work okay with whatever is being served (suspect it will be a bbq catering for both meat eaters and vegetarians) and I am assuming that I will be relied upon to bring enough salad for everyone (so, 10 adults and 10 kids)? I'm happy to do a couple of things - just nothing too overcomplicated please!!

Depends entirely on the cuisine but if it's a bbq I'd probably bring a green salad and a raw slaw type thing

Mammyloveswine · 25/08/2022 20:08

Id do a basic salad-lettuce, cucumber, rocket, green peppers, spring onions, grated carrot, sweetcorn.

Id to an Italian or Greek salad.

Id do a pasta salad and would bring a pot of coleslaw and pot of potato salad.

Seasonal fruit! Green leaves, nectarines, spring onions, radishes and avocado. Honey and mustard dressing (store bought)

Broccoli slaw is a real favourite with my family and friends. Google the Smitten Kitchen version. It's very simple and made with raw brocolli, red onion, dried cranberries and flaked toasted almonds with a buttermilk creamy dressing.

This is what I was going to suggest too. It's really delicious. Easy to make and easy to transport too.

Nigella's New Orleans coleslaw is great for a crowd too

Pretty sure I'd just send them this link Grin

FlowerArranger · 25/08/2022 20:20

Tabbouleh 😀

Yayayaya20 · 25/08/2022 20:21

The word ‘salad’ has done that thing where it just looks and reads ridiculous to me now.

I really want one though!

ThisIsWhyWeCantHaveNiceThings · 25/08/2022 20:25

I'd buy:

Lettuce. Tomatoes. Cucumber. Red peppers. Maybe a few avocados if I was feeling fancy. Big tubs of potato salad and coleslaw.

Probably.

jewishmum · 25/08/2022 20:28

For my husband's lunch salad tomorrow I'm going to be trying:

Cubes or cucumber, black olives, tomatoes, feta cheese, red onion, beetroot, and chicken.

Or you could go to Lild and buy a large container of ready made leafy salad.

Luckypoppy · 25/08/2022 20:31

I'd probably bring a pasta salad, potato salad and then sliced tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce to put on burgers or have as a salad.

FacebookPhotos · 25/08/2022 20:34

I'd do an ordinary garden salad unless you know the dietary requirements of all the people going. Lettuce, cucumber, peppers, tomatoes. Maybe some sweetcorn and grated carrot. Fine for vegans, vegetarians, halal, kosher and almost all allergies. I'd take a couple of tubs of extra bits people can add if they like (eg feta, croutons, olives) and two choices of salad dressing (vinaigrette and Caesar are my preferred).

Making food for a group you don't know well (particularly if it includes kids) means you go simple imo.

My go to side salad for BBQs is found here ->

ZenNudist · 25/08/2022 20:38

I'd do a normal salad lettuce tomato cucumber radish maybe some red pepper. Then I'd do a potato salad of new potatoes tossed in vinegarette with finely chopped spring onion and maybe parsley or chives.

wigywhoo · 25/08/2022 20:39

I wouldn't go, hate this trend. If you had st, you host. Only thing permissible gifts is wine or quality soft drink that doesn't have to be consumed that day - and which can be regifted. There is a legendary bottle of wine that made its way around hundreds of house parties!

wigywhoo · 25/08/2022 20:39

I meant to write "if you host, you host"

steakzilla · 25/08/2022 20:40

I came to say pasta salads or couscous salad or something
Home made coleslaw
Leaves and normal salad veg chopped up but not dressed

Nugg · 25/08/2022 20:42

I'd do an "english" one with curly lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, radish, spring onion.

Greek one - traditional Greek

And a tomato and onion one just cos I LOVE it!

suzyscat · 25/08/2022 20:44

Watermelon, vibes of feta and black olives with red onion and lime juice

Or tabuleh

&

A generic bunged together green salad

Possibly some crudités

notacooldad · 25/08/2022 20:45

Its hardly a new trend, it's been going on for decades. We had ' pot luck" parties when I was a kid 50 years ago!
I think they are great, everyone does a little so no one does a lot and at least you know you'll get something that you like to eat!

Itstrueiagree · 25/08/2022 20:50

I'd probably do 2 types to suit all tastes. A simple green salad without spring onions as not everyone likes them. No dressings.

Or you could chop things separately and put into bowls when you get there so that people can choose for themselves so bowl of tomatoes/cucumber etc. If you make a bowl Inc lettuce I'll bet the younger ones won't eat the lettuce! Then you can have more of a selection including radishes etc.

weaselish · 25/08/2022 21:06

I'd do watermelon and feta salad (chopped watermelon, mint, feta, black pepper and balsamic glaze) and then a pasta salad (pasta, olives, tomatoes, roasted peppers and basil with pesto / olive oil).

Not really the same scenario.

notacooldad · 25/08/2022 21:34

Not really the same scenario
It's not a million miles away though.
OP has been asked to bring a salad. We were / are asked to bring something in particular along for the dinner. Im normally allocated to take dips such as baba ganush, hummus and similar and flat breads. Like doing the salads though.

AllLopsided · 25/08/2022 22:13

Apparently everyone brings couscous... at least this was my experience at a barbecue last weekend! (We were on dessert and took baked cheesecake). I'm gluten free... I just laughed Grin More room for dessert! But maybe liaison with other salad-makers is key here.

Cigent · 25/08/2022 22:19

Either/all of:

Spinach, watercress and rocket, with beetroot, red onion, olives, edamame, sweet potato and red onion with lemon juice and salt dressing.

Watermelon and feta with mint.

Or a big wharldorf
