What do you bring if you are asked to "Bring a salad"?

I must admit I am normally the one who jumps in and offers to "bring pudding" however I have been allocated "bring salad" for a dinner this weekend. So....what would you usually make that would work okay with whatever is being served (suspect it will be a bbq catering for both meat eaters and vegetarians) and I am assuming that I will be relied upon to bring enough salad for everyone (so, 10 adults and 10 kids)? I'm happy to do a couple of things - just nothing too overcomplicated please!!

@ArtyFartyQueen that looks nice! I'd never make it myself as im too basic but I'd love someone to make it for me!

MyDogStoodOnABee · 25/08/2022 18:39

I’d make 3 big bowls - Waldorf, coleslaw and potato salad

GreenGreenGrass23 · 25/08/2022 18:43

A sort of ‘garden salad’ of mixed leaves, tomatoes, peppers, cucumber and red onion.

A plate of sliced beef tomato, sliced mozzarella, pesto blobs and fresh basil leaves

A potato salad of new potatoes, mayo and capers

I think that’s a fair cover of salads

RinklyRomaine · 25/08/2022 18:45

For that many people I'd do a simple
Chopped salad of leaves, cucumber, tomatoes and some herbs with a classic French dressing, then watermelon, cucumber and feta with honey mustard or courgette, lemon, chilli, salt, mint and goats cheese. Plus a basic homemade coleslaw. At a bbq I always eat loads of salad and a bit of meat, so I'd want choices.

If, as the title suggests, they didn't say please I'd not be bringing anything.

Fear not - they did say please, I was summarising the message 😂!

Mango /Peach & cucumber salad

2 Persian cucumbers, deseeded and chopped
1 mango, peach, or a mix, chopped
1 tablespoon chilli flakes
1 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce
1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Bung it all in a bowl and mix.

I have a lovely rice salad which is my go to for buffets and get togethers. Haven't made it for ages, but I think it is vegetarian too, if memory serves.

I would never take a green salad.

SiobhanSharpe · 25/08/2022 18:57

A Middle Eastern salad of cooked brown lentils and basmati rice (equal amounts of each) dressed with quite a lot of olive oil and lemon juice, salt, chopped parsley, ground cumin and thinly sliced fried onions. Topped with a little extra cumin and more onions, fried until very crisp. Served at room temperature with extra lemon to squeeze over.

Soproudoflionesses · 25/08/2022 18:58

I would do a Greek rice salad

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 25/08/2022 19:05

I always bring this rice salad when asked to bring a side dish. I only ever make it with normal basmati rice (have never seen that red rice anywhere!) always serve it cold and it always goes down a treat.

Greek salad and a plain green salad

AnnieKenney · 25/08/2022 19:06

And this: CUCUMBER SALAD WITH AVOCADO AND CASHEWS

caringcarer · 25/08/2022 19:08

I'd do a huge green garden salad with lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, chopped peppers and grated carrots and spring onions and either a rice salad or a potato salad. Probably a few carrot battens too.

cherrypiepie · 25/08/2022 19:10

Basic green salad and a separate dressing.

Homemade potato salad

This thread demonstrates the danger of a host asking a guest to 'bring a salad'!
You could end up with anything, and if you said this to a few people you could end up with millions of salads. I try to pin the host down a bit. Do they want a green salad, grain salad, potato salad, coleslaw? I'll make anything but no one wants to be the one turning up with the fifth bowl of potato salad. If I host I tend to just provide everything, so much easier that way! Other wise I say to bring dessert.

Indeed. If I ended up with no lettuce, cucumbers or tomatoes because someone interpreted salad as an avocado, lentil, mango and rice combination I’d be a bit put out 😂 although I’d still appreciate the effort!

I'm the opposite, I'd enjoy the variety and trying different things at different events. Barbecues can get rather tedious in the summer months if nobody shows any imagination.

A green salad and the Spooning with Rosie Vietnamese steak salad. You would make the salad in advance then take some minute steak that gets slapped on the bbq and is served over the salad for those who want it but is equally delicious without the steak for the veggies

this is a lovely rice salad

Nomorefuckstogive · 25/08/2022 19:41

A simple green salad of just mixed leaves with separate dressing and either a Greek salad or something with grains and/or fruit. I had the most delicious salad the other day - watermelon, feta, thinly sliced red onions and sun dried tomatoes- gorgeous.

I'd do 2 - a green leafy type and one a bit more substantial, a pasta salad or something Middle Eastern - feta, pomegranate etc.

I like the rainbow cous cous salad from Pinch of Nom that has cucumber, cherry tomatoes, peppers, red onion, pomegranate and feta
