...They all things I buy fresh for the fridge and they go off before I used them all.

Can they be defrosted and eaten on their own? I know it's better fresh. I'd really like to have a big selection for the dcs. (I normally have bananas, pears, satsumas and apples on the kitchen table to take as and when)

I'd just like to waste less food.

I use them for smoothies. No point buying them in fresh as they are HUGELY expensive

MerlinsBeard · 16/01/2008 11:11

or sometimes i call it a milkshake if they are being fussy

chrissnow · 16/01/2008 11:11

Ime they tend to go a bit squishy when thawed. Best to make sauces and pies from. (But then I could just be defrosting wrong!!!)

NormaStanleyFletcher · 16/01/2008 11:12

The frozen ones are a bit softer than fresh when they are defrosted.

Very good for mixing with yoghurt for a pud though

bundle · 16/01/2008 11:12

i throw the frozen ones on top of cut up apple in crumble

EricL · 16/01/2008 11:15

Things such as this with high moisture content don't freeze particularly well and can be a bit soggy when they defrost - but are great for deserts and smoothies as already stated.

Even though they are 'quick frozen' the water forms large crystals during the freezing process which when defrosted make them a bit damp.

chrissnow · 16/01/2008 11:22

typical!! I say squishy . . .EricL brings in the science bit

But I think I have seen it reported that frozen produce often keeps it's vitamin content better than fresh fruit that has been in a cooled container ship, flown round the world and languished about in supermarket for a bit. Quick freezing after picking preseerves nutrients better.

I buy those frozen bags and use them in all the ways other people have suggested. They are very good with yogurt.

Also - you get more for the ratio of packaging - not like all those little plastic cartons with a miniscule amount of berries in!

LoveAngel · 16/01/2008 11:28

Same as everyone else, really - I use frozen blueberries in smoothies and with yoghurt for DS - the fresh ones do always go off before they're eaten and are ridiculously expensive - £3 a punnet? Yeah riiight.

murphyslaw · 16/01/2008 14:27

too goopy for eating alone - use in smoothies, cobblers, crumbles and on top of porridge!!!!

OrmIrian · 16/01/2008 14:31

I buy them for eating with yoghurt or to add to smoothies. Unless I can pick them I'd never have them fresh. Too expensive and in the case of strawbs often tasteless.

BananaPudding · 16/01/2008 14:35

what is a "forest fruit"?

I agree with everone about uses for frozen berries

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 16/01/2008 14:37

Forest fruit is usually a mix of blue and black berries with red currants and strawberries.

I use frozen ones for pies, mil shakes and making home made lollies.

I don't mind paying the £3 a punnet as my kids eat them all in one or two days.

tassisssss · 16/01/2008 14:41

i use them in cheesecake and other such desserts

quite nice in smoothies, but i can't really see the point in smoothies.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 16/01/2008 14:41

JUst bought soem frozen blueberries this morning - like the OP have always bought fresh, but sometimes forget to use them befre they go off. I put them in crumbles, so presume fresh/frozen no dfference?

PussinWellies · 16/01/2008 18:49

Mine eat them frozen... do I just have very weird kids?

MargoWishesYouAHappyNooNooYear · 16/01/2008 22:41

No - your kids aren't weird!

I will have to convince my children to try them frozen too! (flavoured ice cubes, don't you know?)

Many thanks for your replies. I'll be getting some on my next visit with a tub of yoghurt.

I buy them all the time. They're great for smoothies, to go with apple in crumbles. Or I just defrost them and add them to yoghurt or porridge. The blueberries are nice frozen. Very cold and sweet and intensely flavoured. I put a pile of them in a bowl for them to snack on. Their fingerprints play havoc with the sofa cushions though.

WendyWeber · 16/01/2008 22:45

Our local supermarket (Booths - very foodie) has recently started selling frozen fruit and veg loose

They even have gooseberries! Also blackberries, rhubarb, fruit salady mix with melon balls etc, mixed summer fruits and other stuff I've forgotten since I was last in, I must buy some. A bowl of defrosted mixed fruit, with greek yogurt, is divine.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 16/01/2008 22:46

how much are they roghly?

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 16/01/2008 22:46

ooh wendy booths is lovely!

MargoWishesYouAHappyNooNooYear · 16/01/2008 22:54

We have a posh shop which stocks homemade frozen meals (even childrens meals)

Ooh PaulaYatesBiggestFan - I was thinking about you today, I thought I'd worked out who you were. I won't reveal as I'm probably wrong and you want to remain incognito.
