What did you cook for lunch today and was it influenced by HFW or Jamie Oliver?

We had (free range) roast chicken, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, sprouts, carrots, stuffing, gravy followed by homemade (by my mum) christmas pudding with homemade (by me) vanilla ice cream, made with free range (from our garden) eggs.

Influenced by HFW and JO? A little. After watching them cooking lovely roast chicken I definitely felt like having it today. We always buy free range anyway. Veggies were being finished off from Christmas, so was a 'use up what is in the fridge' meal.

I'm going to try HFW's risotto this week as well, try and live more cheaply on free range!

Hubby did it and we had free range chicken as usual.

Anyone else?

harumph

SheikYerbouti · 13/01/2008 15:54

Greek salad, as dictated by what was in the fridge at the time.

I always buy free range chicken, but get it from the butcher down the road, as I know where it comes from

I don;t buy free range from supermarkets as it means jack shit

Mmmm, roast chicken.....

Went to buy a free range chicken at sainsburys but chnged my mind when i saw it was 11 quid. can't justify it. Had lamb instead.

expatinscotland · 13/01/2008 15:55

dd1 is ill and was up all night, so i had 'lunch' a few minutes ago.

i made guacamole dip from an avacado i had, threw in a chopped tomato and ate with corn tortillas.

quick, easy and nourishing.

We had roast chicken (one free range, one corn-fed) à la Simon Hopkinson, with lots of butter and lemon in a very hot oven.

Carrots à la Marcella Hazan with butter and parmesan.

Basmati rice d'après my paternal grandmother.

Twiglett · 13/01/2008 15:59

what NAB says but without the 'as usual'

winestein · 13/01/2008 16:03

Are you a convert then Twig? Are you one of the reasons I ended up NOT having chicken tonight (I feel like chi...)

Hecate · 13/01/2008 16:04

Salad, yoghurt and fruit.

And no. It was influenced by the fact that my arse is so huge it has its own postcode.

I got a mumsnet vibe in the chicken aisle (didn't watch the programme though)

VictorianSqualor · 13/01/2008 16:15

We're having free range roast chicken, but we always did anyway so it's nowt to do with the blokes off the telly.

Couldn't eat for a while yet though as had a huge fry-up for late breakfast, the DC's had some fruit before I got up though, influenced by DD's homework to write down everything she eats in a day!

I've got a delicious joint of lamb in the oven - from the butcher just around the corner where all the meat (pig and cow related anyway!) comes from their own farm. We buy all our red meat from there - its not that expensive and the taste difference is so noticeable!

I have only seen the HFW program, and its reminded me why our normal practice is not to buy cheap chicken. Of course this has all coincided with me actually having cheap chicken breasts quite a lot lately, as the husband has been cooking for me a lot lately (due in a week!) and he can do about 3 different meals, plus stuff from jars!

Incidentally, a couple of months ago I did pay around 12 quid for a free range chicken from Abel & Cole (normally I just get some veg from there) and it was delicious, but its a lot for a chicken big enough for 4 or 5 people!

DarthVader · 13/01/2008 17:05

We went free range/organic about a year ago when I had a pay rise. What I hadn't clicked about is that I am buying a lot of non-organic/ free range in the form of processed foods eg mayo, cakes, M&S Cook Meals etc. I am happy to pay more for happier animals but sometimes it is hard to find the happy option eg mayo

filthymindedvixen · 13/01/2008 17:07

free-range chicken - from our freezer

tortoiseSHELL · 13/01/2008 18:22

Sympathies to those who couldn't get a chicken! Ours was delicious!

I agree about the 'hidden' chicken/eggs in ready meals/mayonnaise and even shop bought cakes. Good reason to shop as Waitrose, as I am pretty sure they don't use battery eggs as an ingredient!

Mr Inferior did roast an organic chicken, but not because of Jamie or Hugh.

I have just bunged a marinade of green coriander, green chilli and lime juice on some salmon which I'll grill for supper, and that too is uninfluenced.

Roast free range chook. Hab=ve been buying one for a while now, but instead of chucking the carcass, it is currently simmering away making some stock for risotto next week.

lol @ gingerbear - my stock is simmering away too - simmer for 3-5 hours. - even used leaves from the bay tree in our garden!

Arrgh - what else did you add to stock? I have just chucked the chook in some water!!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 13/01/2008 18:54

Roast lamb - from butchers not organic or local I wouldn't think (Stoke)
