How to convert a bean-hater

BeanHater · 09/05/2022 04:02

DH has successfully converted to liking lentils, via blended porky soups and then curry.
Does anyone please have recipe ideas for making a similar journey with canned beans? He hates both the taste and texture, but wants to be healthy. Thank you.

Eugh I hate beans and no amount of effort would convert me. There is one small caveat that I will tolerate black beans in Mexican food. I’ve got a cookbook with a nice black bean and sweet potato taco recipe.

ItsDinah · 09/05/2022 04:24

Chilli. Hummus. Soup - e.g. minestrone. Might be better trying to use dried beans which won't get as sloppy, provided you don't overcook them.

GrumpyPanda · 09/05/2022 04:27

Have you tried using dried beans? The texture does turn out quite different. What specific types of bean dishes has he tried before and dislikes, presumably standard baked beans?

Gingernaut · 09/05/2022 04:30

Blend them into sauces.

The taste and texture of beans leaving cold, but I can tolerate them in a sauce.

Noodles, pasta and rice, with sauce.

Try beef and bean burgers www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/beef-bean-burgers/ and then just bean burgers realfood.tesco.com/recipes/taco-bean-burgers.html

Patienceisntvirtuous · 09/05/2022 05:59

Making butterbeans into a 'hummus' of sorts converted me.

Minted bean salad is lovely but a matter of taste I guess.

Kidney beans in chillis-add a few more beans too until he acquires the taste!

starrynight21 · 09/05/2022 06:13

Plenty of people who never eat beans, are healthy. There is nothing in canned beans which he can't get some other way.

BeanHater · 09/05/2022 06:14

Thank you. I hadn’t thought to try black beans as I never really eat them. I love throwing cannellini beans into a tomato pasta sauce, kidney beans into rice but he won’t brave these, maybe I’ll try blending the sauce. He has also refused soup with identifiable beans, does like hummus but not chickpeas intact in a tagine. I never use dried beans, will have to get organised and try, what dishes use enough to make it worth it? Bean burgers is a good idea for a step on the journey I think, but not the first one. Thanks all, more ideas welcome too!

I would just leave the beans out of his meal and add them to mine or make beany meals for myself for lunch instead.

DH hates eggs, mushrooms and milk. I can assure you I have spent precisely zero time in the last 25 years trying to convert him by making him eat mushroom omelettes with a caffe latte on the side.

HairyBum · 09/05/2022 06:20

falafel
curry with chickpea

kidney beans in chilli

Mintyt · 09/05/2022 06:35

@Patienceisntvirtuous oooh can you share you minted bean salad please,

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/05/2022 06:40

Beans on toast!

cookiemonster2468 · 09/05/2022 06:48

Fajitas with refried beans.

Does he like baked beans?

Why does he feel like he has to like beans? You can be healthy without eating beans.

TikTokCat · 09/05/2022 07:04

Beans are disgusting. Leave your dh alone

ILookAtTheFloor · 09/05/2022 14:12

I don't love beans (hate baked beans and won't touch them) but do try and force them down as I'm trying to do the 30 plants a week thing (I had a thread on this a while back) so I can see why you're encouraging pulse consumption OP!

toastofthetown · 10/05/2022 21:35

If he doesn't like them then fair enough. I like beans, but they do have a texture that I can see why some people don't. The texture of dried beans is still distinctly a beany texture. There are plenty of healthy recipes that don't use beans.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 11/05/2022 08:33

From a lateral perspective, would you be able to include Gram flour in your cooking? That’s made of ground chickpeas, and is great to use for Indian style veg fritters… and probably more stuff.

CaliforniaDrumming · 11/05/2022 08:37

I eat beans almost daily. Not for health but bcos I am S Asian. Google recipes for rajma ( kidney beans) or channa masala ( chickpeas). You could also try making dosas if you are really keen. Many many bean dishes in Indian cuisine.

picklemewalnuts · 11/05/2022 08:42

Refried beans. Made with pinto or kidney, and lots of seasoning- cumin, chilli, coriander if he likes it.

Trick is to have it regularly, very well blended. Then gradually blend less until he notices the bean parts. We called it 'Mexican sauce' so DS didn't know there were beans in it until long after he'd committed to liking it!

Ditto humus. Make it smooth, then gradually coarsen the texture.

nearlyspringyay · 11/05/2022 08:44

Cassoulet
Chorizo and bean stew
Cannellini mash

drspouse · 11/05/2022 16:27

Following as I am also married to a bean hater.
He will just about tolerate a few lentils in a meat bolognese (neither of us like Quorn/soy mince so that's as far as we've got).
The DCs are moderately fussy, one has ADHD and a small appetite so it isn't entirely their fault, but will eat baked beans and hummus and I'd love to expand out from there but DH won't eat either of them.
He will eat black bean sauce but I don't think black beans on tacos (though TBF I haven't tried).
Neither of the DCs will eat bean burgers or even the Heinz five bean baked beans.
They are hopeless!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/05/2022 16:32

Cannelini beans in Italian stew?

boonducks · 11/05/2022 16:34

I have all varieties of beans in my cupboards and find them pretty interchangeable.
Try mashed up with garlic, spices and honey along with tacos.

kateandme · 11/05/2022 16:34

Adding chorizo always helps!

I do actually find this, TBF. But nobody would eat my chickpea and chorizo stew so maybe I need a less bean-y recipe.
