Broccoli stalk?

Does anyone use the whole broccoli including the stalk? I tend to chop the florettes off and throw away the stalk but wonder if it could be used? I mean clearly it's edible if it's cooked but it doesn't look like it would be very nice or have much nutrition?

We chop it up and freeze it for soups, or make Chorizo and Broccoli Stalk Pasta (Two Chubby Cubs first book).

Why wouldn’t it have much nutrition?

I use the stalk the same as the rest of it, sliced fairly thinly, or minced if I’m making a pesto or something. If there’s a really woody bit I give it to my chickens or compost it.

The stalk is delicious - I just chop it and do whatever I’m doing with the florets with it

I use stalks in soups and stir fries. For both, I just peel away any mucky, knobbly bits and use. Slice finely for stir fries and a bit chunkier for soup (it gets blended by the soup machine). Never had any complaints about it.

I slice it really finely then use it raw in salad or in coleslaw. It’s delicious raw.

You can also slice it up and tear apart the florets and roast with an obscene amount of garlic, delish

Max La Manna does a great taco mix with grated broccoli stalk and green lentils. Really easy and tastes great 😊

I prefer it to the broccoli, I either chopit up and boil along with the broccoli or add it to a stir fry.

Soups, stir fries, roasted with oil and garlic. Lovely stuff, delicious chopped into thick sticks, steamed and eaten with melted butter, bit like asparagus.

springtimeishereagain · 06/05/2022 12:45

If it's good enough for Masterchef... no reason it can't be used!

SerendipitySunshine · 06/05/2022 12:54

It's the best bit. I eat it raw.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/05/2022 12:56

Grated and put into whatever risotto I'm making.

We took it diced to the park for the ducks but they just wanted bread, the heathens.

RaininSummer · 06/05/2022 12:57

Nothing wrong with it but I tend to chop and boil it for my dog.

I only eat the stalk! Hate broccoli florets, weird mushy things that are overcooked in seconds. However the stalk is delicious.

Geranium1984 · 06/05/2022 13:03

I usually throw it away but came across a chicken meatball recipie when I was weaning my son. I think it had grated broccoli stalk, bread crumbs, egg & chicken mince. They were nice and moist 😋

stickygotstuck · 06/05/2022 13:07

Why on earth would you throw away the stalk?? It's broccoli.

I prefer it raw, but it's fine cooked too.

Undecicive · 06/05/2022 13:09

I just munch it up after peeling it. It's like raw kohlrabi.

cherrymax · 06/05/2022 13:11

Most of ours goes to the dog. They like it raw.

Grated broccoli stalk, grated apple, dill and mayonnaise makes a change from traditional coleslaw.

Snoken · 06/05/2022 13:23

Roasted in the oven with some herbs and sprices is my favourite.

GiraffesMightFly · 06/05/2022 13:40

It's also great for pickling.

MintJulia · 06/05/2022 13:43

It's delicious. Slice thinly & stir fry or chop and put in soups.

pandora206 · 06/05/2022 13:46

Soups, salads, stir fries. Also good juiced (with other veg/fruit). It's very nutritious.

APurpleSquirrel · 06/05/2022 13:54

I chop it up & add to my roast veggy pasta sauce & then blitz it.

It's the best bit. I eat it raw.

Same. I peel off the outer layer as it's usually tough and eat the middle

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 06/05/2022 14:06

Funnily enough it tastes like broccoli. Just cut the knobbly/thick skin bits off. It's lovely raw too.
