How many/much chicken thighs for three people?

I'm having guests over on Friday and was planning on serving chicken thighs but have no idea how much is a standard portion? The chicken thighs will be served with a chickpea and sweet potato dish (which I'm sure all the meat eater will enjoy), salad and rice. How many thighs or what weight of thighs would you serve?

Who is funny about meat on the bone? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Genuinely asking as I've never heard of this before and it's been mentioned a couple of times.

I had guests turning up early the other day as I was actually sectioning a whole chicken into pieces. I didn't take any of it off the bone to cook.

Oh, and I agree three per person would be fab 😁

I can be funny about meat on the bone. I am happy to eat it, especially if it’s so tender it will fall off the bone, and I would never turn my nose up if I was served it at someones house. But it’s just more difficult, I am more wasteful as I don’t always get as much meat off, and I’ve had some where there really isn’t much meat on there compared to bone, cartilage… Sometimes it becomes a case of ‘the juice isn’t worth the squeeze’ in terms of effort in getting meat off the bone vs what you actually have to eat!

It’s many 😀

ImInStealthMode · 04/05/2022 19:37

3 per person, but only because they're my favourite and I'd be most put out if I was left shortchanged (serving me 2 and having the option of seconds would be fine though).

Will there be a massive salad as well?

RitaFaircloughsWig · 04/05/2022 19:40

At least 3 each - they're cheap after all.

@SummaLuvin I hope you don't mind if I ask a follow up?

Is it a practical thing in that it's just tricky to wield a knife and fork around the bone? Or is it a squeamish thing about eating something with bones and being confronted with that?

I am really interested.

I also tend to serve things with the hone on slow cooked, and yes, completely falling off the bone. I take skin off often before serving to make things look nicer. I am now overthinking that I've made guests feel uncomfortable with bones 🙈

Wow, I'm definitely not a believer in the MN chicken but I'd only do 1 big thigh or 2 small per person (plus 1 or 2 extra). I'd do a lot of veg in that casserole though, the chickpeas will bulk it out so you don't need tons of meat and sweet potatoes are awesome and you can never have too many.

SummaLuvin · 04/05/2022 20:06

@xraydelta not squeamish, just lazy! I find it easier if I can use my hands rather than cutlery, but that isn’t always practical with certain dishes.

merryhouse · 04/05/2022 20:11

@xraydelta I served chicken thigh to son's girlfriend (18yo) a few months ago and she didn't really know what to do with it.

H took it out into the kitchen to pull apart while I regaled everyone else with how I had been exactly the same at her age. Had literally never had meat on the bone. For the first couple of years of our marriage H would take my discarded thighbones and finish them off Grin

liveforsummer · 04/05/2022 20:13

I'd. Definitely do at least 3 pp, dc eat at least 2 each. As above cold chicken has plenty uses so won't be wasted if they have smaller appetites.

toastofthetown · 08/05/2022 14:12

Just to update - I asked the butcher for nine thighs and I got eleven. Eight went during the meal so the three per person to be on the safe side was probably right. Thanks everyone!
