How many/much chicken thighs for three people?

I'm having guests over on Friday and was planning on serving chicken thighs but have no idea how much is a standard portion? The chicken thighs will be served with a chickpea and sweet potato dish (which I'm sure all the meat eater will enjoy), salad and rice. How many thighs or what weight of thighs would you serve?

I'd do two per person then an additional two if anyone is hungrier / could be your lunch the next day. They can really shrink down and look smaller

CuriousCatfish · 02/05/2022 17:37

I'd do two per person.

OstrichFeathers · 02/05/2022 17:38

Two per person with a couple of spares, as above.

ivykaty44 · 02/05/2022 17:39

6 thighs total, 2 each medium size

user1499114292 · 02/05/2022 17:39

At least 9, 3 each some are very small, and do shrink. They’ll be good leftovers like all all cold chicken, if there are any

LoveSpringDaffs · 02/05/2022 17:40

I'm vegetarian, and it's been a LONG time since I've cooked meat, but I'd have said 2pp, and then put a extras in, chicken never goes to waste cold & you can send it home with guests if none of you eat meat.

Gladioli23 · 02/05/2022 17:40

2 each and a couple of spares as above.

ZenKaleidoscope · 02/05/2022 17:40

I'd do 9 in total so I wouldn't have to stress about it. It's embarrassing if there's not enough food but if there's more you can have it for the next day.

TDCtomorrow · 02/05/2022 19:06

I'd easily eat 3 as they're small delicious
Have you checked with your guests if they eat them, some people are weird about thighs.

SummaLuvin · 03/05/2022 16:16

I take a different approach to portion size when it comes to entertaining, as I know that I definitely eat more and am more greedy when letting loose on the weekend as opposed to a standard weekday meal. So I would probably budget 3 thighs per person (unless they are particularly big or small). I would also think about the guests, some of my friends can really pack it away, other tend to eat lightly, so that would be a consideration when deciding. Generally I prefer to deal with leftovers as a host than feel my guests haven't had enough.

Thestoppedfan · 03/05/2022 16:19

I’d do 3 per person but I’d expect to have leftovers. They keep well in the fridge (although chance would be a fine thing in this house- DH would have definitely snaffled them the minute the guests left).

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 03/05/2022 16:19

I would do 2 plus spares but would be grateful if you asked me first as I’d only have one (but would pack away the rest as sounds relish)

wonkygorgeous · 03/05/2022 16:22

The skinny one in the supermarket? 9 definitely

Big plump ones maybe 6.

timestheyarechanging · 03/05/2022 17:27

3 per person. I would buy and cook more as you can have them the next day and I would always like to offer my guests 'seconds'

AdaColeman · 03/05/2022 17:34

3 per person would be about right for a portion size I'd say. They probable come in packs of ten?

hellcatspanglelalala · 03/05/2022 17:36

I usually do two pp.

DockOTheBay · 03/05/2022 17:41

I would do 9. Two each is usually enough but can't hurt to have extra.
I agree with PP who says check with your friends, a lot of people don't like eating meat off the bone.

mrsm43s · 04/05/2022 11:58

On average, I'd say it would be 2 pp, but they vary so much in size (as do appetities) so it's hard to say exactly. I'd buy a kg, which would mean I'd safely have enough for 3. Kg packs at the supermarket can vary from 6 thighs to 10 +. In an ideal world, I'd serve 2 large thighs each, but if the pack contains piddly thighs, I'd serve 3 each.

stuntbubbles · 04/05/2022 12:00

Just one Mumsnet chicken thigh, surely?

I’d do 3-4pp depending on their size so it all looks generous and bountiful in the serving platter, and you’re guaranteed some leftovers for lunches.

Triffid1 · 04/05/2022 18:49

I'd go for 3 but fully expect there to be leftovers. 2 per person for first serving and a third for those who want seconds (also depends on size).

Don't be like my friend who once invited me and toddler DS and served one thigh per person... including for her teenage sons and DH who was, at the time, cycling 30 miles+ per day to and from work! Even DS was starving and we had to stop at McDonalds on way home!

mackthepony · 04/05/2022 18:50

3 per person, obviously

That's the rule

toastofthetown · 04/05/2022 18:55

Thanks everyone. Sounds like three per person is the safest option (and I am sure that my guests will eat thighs). Unless (as @stuntbubbles suggested) my butcher has a thigh from the Mumsnet chicken, where one thigh will be plenty, with leftovers for lunch!

You’ve already decided but I would also echo 3! You don’t want to not have enough.

jackstini · 04/05/2022 19:12

Boneless thighs?
If not, I would check as some people are funny about on the bone

3 each I would say

maddiemookins16mum · 04/05/2022 19:12

Two with 1 available each as a extra if wanted.
