I just can't do it .Little bits get stuck on the egg ,half the egg comes away withe shell ..

I boil ,run cold water on them ,roll egg on hard surface and the massacre commences .
I like to eat them warm ,not freezing cold .

Get an egg steamer -about a tenner.
It was on the news the other day in fact.
The eggs peel perfectly.

I'm really tempted! Are they good?

SingingSands · 29/04/2022 09:42

As soon as you take the eggs out the boiling water, plunge them into cold water.

Then remove, and tap all over with a teaspoon. Now use the handle of the teaspoon to peel.

Easy!

starfishmummy · 29/04/2022 09:47

I was going to suggest the roll method but see that isn't working for you.

Husband drives me dotty. He just picks bits off. "pick pick pick". Takes forever!!!

Mariposista · 29/04/2022 09:48

I literally love peeling boiled eggs - even though I don't really like eating them haha Once boiled, put them in cold water and leave for at least half an hour until cold. This makes the peeling easier. Bash it very slightly on the side, until you find a starting point (not too hard) and peel with the pads of your fingers, never the nails.

StooOrangeyForCrows · 29/04/2022 09:49

Fresh eggs are a bugger to peel. The older they are, the easier they are to peel. Plunge straight into cold water makes it easier too.

RiverSkater · 29/04/2022 09:52

Most hated task!

I really wished the 'Have it Oeuf' egg peeler from Bridget Jones Diary really existed. 😆

nearlyspringyay · 29/04/2022 09:55

I tap them on the side of the sink and peel under running water. Easy.

I find peeling hard boiled eggs oddly satisfying.

HellyR · 29/04/2022 10:22

I don't want cold eggs though! I want them warm with a soft yolk!

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/04/2022 10:23

I’ve found that really fresh eggs are much harder to peel than those a few days older.

Lifechanging!🤣
Seriously good.
No pans of boiling water and so much cheaper.
Plus the eggs peel properly

I need to know this too. I've spent quite a lot of my life trying to discern the ultimate "big bash/small bash" ratio - you need a couple of well-spaced big bashes to get going, but you want to be able to get pieces of shell that aren't too big but aren't minuscule.
I use a normal spoon (not teaspoon) to get under the shell once I've got a decent opening, but it's not always fruitful.

Agree that fresher eggs have a stickier membrane.

With an egg steamer you pierce a hole in the fat end.
As they steam it shrinks away from the egg.

LOL its called HOW TO BOIL AN EGG.
Part 1 of her classic cookery course.
But I think everything is now also on her (FREE) website.
My go-to for any standard techniques and classic recipes.

Amazing! It’s such a good idea to have that level of detail.

Yarnasaurus · 29/04/2022 12:30

It doesn't really matter how you cook them, for neat peeling you need eggs that aren't too fresh, and you need to cool them quickly and thoroughly before peeling.

whataloadabullocks · 29/04/2022 12:34

Yarnasaurus beat me to it, the fresher the egg the harder to peel!
Op I have chooks so boiled are eggs are a regular occurrence. I boil them, cool quickly and then tap them all the way round so the shell is well crumpled. Pop them back in the pan with cold water for a few mins, and then the shell tends to slide off easily. But very fresh eggs are harder to peel (tend to use freshly laid eggs for recipes that require raw or semi-cooked eggs.

pizzaand · 29/04/2022 13:09

We use the instant pot- super easy peeling every time

Wallywobbles · 29/04/2022 15:16

Very fresh eggs don't peel.

Wallywobbles · 29/04/2022 15:16

Very fresh eggs don't peel.

They do if you use an egg boiler/ steamer.
I have my own hens and it makes no difference how fresh they are.

Bunty55 · 29/04/2022 15:21

I may get flamed here... isn't life too short for this ?

Rummikub · 29/04/2022 15:25

No
its the little things that make a difference

OhamIreally · 30/04/2022 09:24

Teaspoon trick here. My exMIL showed me I couldn't believe what a game changer it was.

Also showed me how to make shortcrust pastry in 2 minutes flat.

Love my MIL. Her son (my ex) not so much.

Karwomannghia · 30/04/2022 09:28

I used to struggle but it’s so easy if you do it in water after cracking them all over. The water gets under the shell and it slips off.

ignatiusjreilly · 04/05/2022 16:36

statetrooperstacey · 29/04/2022 09:29

ignore Everybody else. The trick is to have the water on a boil first . That’s all you need to do. Make sure the the water is boiling first , then lower eggs in on a spoon. No other tricks needed.

This is correct. I was getting really frustrated that my eggs weren't peeling easily, so I experimented with lots of different methods.

This is my tried and tested method:

  1. Boil the water first, then lower the eggs in VERY slowly to prevent cracking, especially if they've come straight from the fridge. (I found it didn't make a difference to the peeling whether they were refrigerated or not.)
  2. Once cooked, plunge them into cold water (with ice if possible) for a few minutes.
  3. Enjoy the satisfaction of peeling a nice smooth egg!

I don't want cold eggs though! I want them warm with a soft yolk!

In this instance you just cut the top off and scoop out don't you?

NervousFlyer2022 · 04/05/2022 16:46

I have to say I've always found older eggs the worst to peel and fresh eggs so much easier!

endofthelinefinally · 04/05/2022 16:51

I chuck the boiled eggs straight into a bowl of cold water, roll them gently to crack the shell all over, then peel them underwater. They are still warm when you lift them out.
