DH brought home crème fraîche...

Instead of clotted cream (7.5 months pregnant & really fancied a cream tea but alas, there were also no scones).

What should I make with it? Some kind of pasta sauce? It's not something I usually buy.

No meat, but we do eat fish (although I don't have anything fresh in... I have tinned mackerel, tuna, anchovies though).

Use it to make a creamy tomato sauce. Yummy. Even my kids love it!

Blone · 17/04/2022 18:08

Mackerel pâté

Palavah · 17/04/2022 18:08

Do you have horseradish? That mixed in with creme fraiche, mackerel, black pepper and lemon juice will be a lovely pate, on toast or crackers. With celery / cucumber if possible.

Xiaoxiong · 17/04/2022 18:15

Dollop on crumble or a warm pudding or stewed apples

Make blini with smoked salmon or salmon roe

Make beef stroganoff

Theforest · 17/04/2022 18:15

Cauliflower and broccoli cheese

choosername1234 · 17/04/2022 18:20

Dunk Doritos in it, yum

HellyR · 17/04/2022 18:25

If you have any pesto of any flavour it makes a nice sauce for chicken etc with creme fraiche. I often have a pot on the go but can't think of what I use it on!
Enchiladas if you have tortillas, tin of toms, cheese etc.

apricotlane · 17/04/2022 18:27

I have it on puddings instead of cream as I like that the tang offsets sweetness tbh. I find normal cream too rich.

apricotlane · 17/04/2022 18:28

We also use it mixed in with pesto for a cold sausage pasta dish and also on fajitas instead of sour cream.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 17/04/2022 18:28

fish pie....

if feeling swanky then I saute some sliced fennel for the bottom of the dish, but if it's a cba day then it's frozen peas or spinach, lay your cubed raw fish over that, sliced boiled eggs.
Let the creme fraiche down with some milk and mix in a couple of teaspoons of cornflour, pout that over the fish, cover with mash....oven until golden.

or use it in the same way for a sub for bechamel....cheese it up for cauliflower cheese or macaroni cheese.

or eat it with a spoon.

The mackerel pate sounds amazing but with the recent warnings about listeria and avoiding smoked fish in pregnancy it's sadly off the menu (I don't think tinned mackerel in tomato sauce will work as well as lovely smoked mackerel!).

The creamy tomato sauce is a great idea, I think I'll give that a go.

Quick fish pie, creamy mushroom pasta, use it to replace anything 'saucy.'

inappropriateraspberry · 17/04/2022 19:05

Or just stir some spices or something from a jar in (pesto, a rub, marinade, curry paste) to make a dip.

aimss4777 · 17/04/2022 19:06

I mix it with cheese in pasta with veg! Super creamy cheesy sauce

Newnormal99 · 17/04/2022 19:08

Mix it into a beef stock roux for ikea style meatballs.

Or make chilli / fajitas

Nopetynopenooe · 17/04/2022 19:09

Chuck a load of grapes in it and eat- yum.

Wow. You’re understanding. If I’d craved a cream tea pregnant and my dolt of a husband brought creme fraiche instead of clotted cream, I’d have been narked. (Understatement).

When I was eight months pregnant during lock down, my husband picked up a takeaway curry for us. He didn’t check the bag and my curry wasn’t in there. He didn’t go back as he had a piss up video call with his friends to attend. He offered me half of his curry but it was spicy AF and wasn’t what I’d been looking forward to so I declined and went to bed livid. I’m still pretty sore about it. You can probably tell.

mrsfeatherbottom · 17/04/2022 21:07

If you want a nice, really easy dip, swirl sweet chilli sauce into crème fraiche.

Artesia · 17/04/2022 22:09

Melt a knob of butter in a pan, then add the crème fraiche with a splash of white wine, some lemon juice, and black pepper. Stir in cooked fish (salmon flakes work well) but I also like tuna and prawns in it. Serve over pasta with fresh herbs (flat leaf parsley or dill both work really well).

I think he panic bought the creme fraiche rather than coming back empty-handed (as opposed to mixing then up) Grin

A missing curry would probably make me cry right now...

This sounds lovely but surely most of the joy of cooking with wine comes from having a glass while doing it Wink

Oh I did cry @AwkwardPaws27. I think I pity ate a packet of chocolate digestives.

Deathraystare · 23/04/2022 17:37

First LTB (joke!) then make a potato salad adding the creme fraiche. L:idl do a potato salad with creme fraiche and it is gorgeous. I cannot eat it now as I am single and the pot is huge.

dreamingofsun · 27/04/2022 13:45

i had creme fraiche on scones with jam during lockdown. Had a craving, though not pregnant, and supermarket had no clotted. Was actually quite nice...though I'd be angry about no scones.

Beamur · 27/04/2022 13:49

You can use creme fraiche anywhere you'd use cream, it's great for cooking but is nice with sweet things too - slightly sharper tasting than cream.
My MIL would have served it instead of clotted cream with scones. I quite like it with tinned fruit for a simple pudding.
