Coriander WTF is going on?

ClaraMint · 16/04/2022 21:55

Over the last 4 weeks I have bought coriander in a pot from Asda, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Asda again. They have all wilted and died in 24 hours of getting them home. Watered some and not others. Never had a problem before. Is it just me?

I’ve never been able to keep it going. The cut and packaged seems to last longer.

Lifeisforalimitedperiodonly · 16/04/2022 22:08

It's because coriander is the evil vile herb from hell.

This. Tastes like a mix of vomit and soap
BananaBender · 16/04/2022 22:11

Think of it as the trash taking itself out. One less coriander plant in the world is a good thing.

Satan's herb.

I buy a really big bunch. Wash it, shake it and put it whole in a zip lock bag in the freezer.

Once it's frozen crush the bag in your hands and the coriander shatters. You don't need to chop it up.

It works well in all recipes.

Much easier than fresh this time of year.

Haha I had no idea there was such an anti-coriander movement! I love it and have never had a problem before with the potted stuff, usually keeps for a week or so. But definitely no good after the first cut.

Grim stuff 😩

Thank you, sounds like a perfect solution Smile

Am I alone in keeping mine going for 2 -3 weeks until I’ve pretty much used it all up?

Emmelina · 16/04/2022 22:21

There’s a split with coriander. Some love it, for others it tastes of soap. I’m unfortunately one of the latter!
But fresh herb pots from supermarkets always fail for me too. I buy packs of ready cut, use what I need when it’s fresh then freeze the rest before it wilts.

BeetyAxe · 16/04/2022 22:22

You’re all wrong- send the coriander to me. I adore it.

LittleEsme · 16/04/2022 22:24

Arm wrestle you for it @BeetyAxe. I love the stuff! Especially with chilli and rice

Inklingpot · 16/04/2022 22:25

I love coriander and deeply resent continually buying fresh. I’m going to try the freezing and crushing suggestion. I’ve tried growing it and have never succeeded.

mizzo · 16/04/2022 22:26

This always happens to me so I use buy the bunches as and when I need them.

Oddly coriander tastes of soap to me but I still really like it!

GrumpyPanda · 16/04/2022 22:36

Love the stuff but it doesn't keep terribly well in pots. Try buying from a nursery rather than a supermarket and transplant to bigger pots or even plant them.

thecurtainsofdestiny · 16/04/2022 22:41

I bought a growing one today and planted it out. Now curious to see if it survives the night!

eurochick · 16/04/2022 22:44

Coriander is in the same category as Brussels sprouts - for some people it tastes really strong and extra bitter. My husband is one of them. To me they taste nice but they make him gag, and he is usually not a fussy eater.

AllLopsided · 16/04/2022 22:51

I grow it from seed (in fact from the previous year's gone-to-seed plants) but it always bolts. I would consider 2-3 weeks a decent life for a home-grown plant, never mind a supermarket pot - but 24 hours is a bit pathetic (I guess you could try taking it back?)

Lemondrop2 · 16/04/2022 23:00

We just opened up a bag of it, bought yesterday, and it was all slimy.

I was hoping that someone would explain why on this thread. Will placemark, just in case.

Georgyporky · 17/04/2022 10:08

Tesco sell it in bags in the freezer section, better than those little cardboard tubs, & it lasts forever.

I’ve tried the frozen stuff and wasn’t impressed with it, sadly.
DiamondBright · 17/04/2022 14:10

Awful stuff.

thecurtainsofdestiny · 17/04/2022 15:44

It's still alive!

Wafflehouse · 17/04/2022 15:46

I saw something on tv about living herbs from supermarkets, can’t remember what it was on, but they said that they cram too many plants in one pot so if you buy these, when you get them home split them over 4 pots and they should keep going for longer. I haven’t actually tried it so can’t vouch for it.
