Fruit from a greengrocers, definitely. Seasonal, local and RIPE!!

BurpyErnie · 09/01/2008 01:05

Fruit -better when it's ripe and ready to eat - local veg shop (which is cheap but lets not be ethical about how many air miles were involved)
Meat - butchers (propper ones who know how to cut up meat)
Fish straight from the sea if you live by it!
Cheese - Iove black bomber don't know where it comes from.
If you know Cardiif there alway's Riverside Market on sunday morning which whas bread to die for... and cakes

the rest I don't know

Aitch · 09/01/2008 01:06

fruit veg is cheaper from greengrocer, fresher from farmers market.potatoes last for a winter if you buy them from the farmer.

fish, yes, from a 'monger.

eggs, it's worth buying organic free range ponce eggs imo.

cheese, from a supermarket is fine. from fabby 'monger if having people round but it costs a fortune.

milk tastes better if organic, likewise butter, don't know about yog.

bread... depends on the baker. some are shite, it'll depend who's local.

welliemum · 09/01/2008 01:15

Agree with Aitch on all her points.

We keep our own free-range chickens [super-ponce] and their eggs are so much tastier.

DH and I were eating home-grown lettuce the other evening and agreeing that even that tasted better than shop stuff. It must have been a double hallucination though because lettuce is just basically water isn't it, so how would there be a difference. .

amytheearwaxbanisher · 09/01/2008 01:16

fish from monger
meat from butcher
bread rom baker
all these are much better the rest i dont know

Aitch · 09/01/2008 01:19

it's because commercial lettuce, in fact a lot of veg, is forced through with water before it is picked. mushrooms are terrible for that, but any high water content veg suffers. whereas your lettuce has been left to grow slowly when the soil is drier etc so has developed more flavour. according to some tv show i saw, anyway.

welliemum · 09/01/2008 01:22

Wow [blinded by science]

So all those times when I forgot to water the lettuce and nearly killed it, I was actually enhancing the flavour?

Must tell DH asap

BurpyErnie · 09/01/2008 01:26

The best eggs we ever got was from our butcher (he has now retired)
make your own pizza and bread...
My tomtoes failed last year... I cried... too many slugs in the garden

Aitch · 09/01/2008 01:35

i may be wrong, it was only jamie oliver or someone.

welliemum · 09/01/2008 01:39

No no, don't spoil it, I'm enjoying this vision of myself as an expert grower of gormay lettuce

fruit/veg - always seem nicer when bought local; ideally I like to go to the local farm shop but don't always get chance. I prefer local to organic.

meat - again local if I can, otherwise I try and buy free range and/or organic from Waitrose or Sainsburys

fish - no decent fishmonger locally sadly; I buy my fish from Waitrose fresh counter

milk - we get ours from the milkman. I don't like organic milk though, have tried it and gone back to normal.

bread - nicer from local bakers

Oliveoil · 09/01/2008 11:15

we get our meat from our local farmer

everything else comes from Tesco's

bread, milk and eggs are organic, eveything else bog standard

I am sure fruit and veg is nicer from a quaint farmers' market, ditto cheese from a cheese shop, bread from a baker etc etc but quite frankly I have neither the time nor the inclination to spend my day mooching about

Aitch · 09/01/2008 12:11

see i find i can get so much of my shopping done at the farmers market every fortnight that i think it saves me time. plus they sell ostrich burgers so we scoff as we shop.

nappyaddict · 09/01/2008 13:11

ostrich burgers .... what do they taste like then?

OP posts:
BrieVinDeAlkaSeltzer · 09/01/2008 13:13

Ehhhhhhhhh Ostrich ...

Can't remember but I would eat them again.

ConnorTraceptive · 09/01/2008 13:19

Veg: Deffinately get them from a greengrocer, fresh deliveries everyday, more choice of local produce, cheaper, better quality, much tastier imo.

Bread: I buy from the bakers, costs a bit more but stays fresher much longer.

bookwormmum · 09/01/2008 13:27

Home-made bread is yummy as well and with breadmakers being so cheap now, it doesn't have to take all day.

I don't eat much seafood but fish probably does taste better from a fishmonger.

Fruit/veg definitely from a greengrocers if you can find one.

My grandparents used to have fresh milk from the lady over the road... it was still warm (this was about 20 years ago)!! I didn't like it though as it was unpasturised - doubt if it would be allowed now. They also used to buy fresh duck eggs occasionally. The person who sold them probably even knew what duck had laid them - that's really living close to nature.

Anna8888 · 09/01/2008 13:29

I buy my fruit and vegetables from a greengrocer in the open air street market 1.5 km walk from here.

I buy my fish from the fishmonger opposite the greengrocer.

I buy veal (truly excellent quality) from the butcher across the road but chicken, sausages, mince, lamb, guinea fowl, duck from the supermarket, because it is better and lasts longer than that bought at the butcher's.

I buy free-range eggs and milk from the supermarket. I buy some cheese from the supermarket and some from a cheese shop.

I buy butter (on-line) and yoghourt at the supermarket.

I buy bread from the bakery opposite my house (baked fresh all day long ).

ComeOVeneer · 09/01/2008 13:32

fruit/veg - local greengrocer
meat - local butcher
fish - local fishmonger
eggs - butcher
cheese - local deli
milk - organic delivered
butter - supermarket
yoghurt - make own
bread - make own

nailpolish · 09/01/2008 13:32

fruit/veg - not all, but definitely some such as carrots - i love dirty muddy carrots

meat - definitely - doesnt have to be organic, but has to have had fresh air and exercise (IMO)

fish - sometimes you cant tell, but i dont like dyed fish (ie smoked yellow stuff)

eggs - yes. and the yolk is v yellow

cheese - not really

milk - yes but i dont buy it

butter - i like salty organic stuff so yes

yoghurt - definitely can tell the difference if made with good homemade ingredients

bread - 100% definitely

nailpolish · 09/01/2008 13:33

we have a farm shop nearby so i just go there

Spidermama · 09/01/2008 13:34

The fruit and veg from my Riverford box tastes way better than stuff from the supermarket. I really notice it. I try to never buy supermarket 'fresh' food but on the few occasions when I do my cooking is simply nowhere near as tasty.
