Xmas dinner.

Want to make it as little special rather than it beig a sunday dinner but with turkey so just wondered what everyone else cooked???

We have roast turkey, roast potatoes and parsnips, lots of veg (broccoli, sprouts, carrots, peas, sweetcorn, etc), bread sauce (I love this!), chestnut stuffing (with onions and bacon - it's lovely!) and gravy. Wondering about roasting some sweet potato this year too for variety. We have it at my mum and dad's and we all pitch in and help with the cooking (Dad roasts the chestnuts the night before!).

lots of roasted seasonal organic veg
make your own stuffing with sausage meat and fresh sage
cook the turkey in duck fat(its only once a year honest!)
huge glug of claret in the gravy
Know what you mean about it sometimes being just like a normal roast

We get the local butcher's stuffed Turkey crown which is always wonderful. We have roast spuds and parsnips, sprouts and sweetcorn. I always make a cranberry sauce with orange juice and gravy from scratch. We always have smoked salmon to start.

Not water chestnuts, Merchant Gourmet do some nice vacuum packed ones that are really tasty and super-easy to use.

righ have dh is so fussy and this is what he's agreed to have.

Turkey (as long as it's a crown)
Mash Potoatoes
Roast pots
Petie pois
fresh carrotts
sausage wrapped in bacon
stuffin (but onily me n dd will have this he hates it)
gravy

know of us like xmas pudding so think i might make a apple pie unless anyones got any better surgestions.

mentioned the chestnuts to him and he pulled a horrid face so there a no no.

dh will only have

turkey (white meat only)
yorkshire puddings
brocolli
potatoes (mash and roast)
gravy
sauages wrapped in bacon.

me i like all the extras,

roast vegetables (sweet potatoes, parsnips etc)
carrots and swede mash
stuffing

for pudding we get a fancy chocolate roule thingy from tescos. its scrummy.

this year we are at MIL so dont know what we will have really.

Homemade soup with crusty rolls and butter to start

Turkey
Ham
Roasties (yum yum)
Sprouts (but stirfried with garlic and chestnuts only
Carrots (in orange juice and honey, delicious)
Roast parsnips
Sausages wrapped in bacon (the best bit, imo)
Stuffing

Xmas pud with brandy butter, mince pies, cream and something like chocolate mousse for my brother who won't eat xmas pud.

Very traditional, really.

hunkermunker, I could kiss you! The Merchant Gourmet site has taken hours off my Thanksgiving preps with the croutons and chestnuts. Thank you!

scaltygirl, we do a Christmas goose. I use Delia's recipe here . We always have left overs (2 adults, 2 finicky kids) and they're great. And there's the added bonus of all the goose fat -- keep spooning it out and freeze it for later use making fantabulous roast potatoes.

Would anyone know how far in advance I can : make a cheesecake, make pies, and cut up celeriac (will it discolour? should I cook it first, then freeze?).

Oops, meant to add, we do turkey for Thanksgiving, but the menu is:
roast turkey
homemade stuffing (husband's recipe)
gravy
smoked ham
poached salmon (for the veggies)
peas with celeriac
mashed potatoes
sweet potato thingy
cranberry sauce
pumpkin cheesecake
chocolate pecan pie
chess pie

And it's this Saturday, so I need to get started!

It's 'just pie', really. The filling is eggs, sugar, cream and butter. It's one of my favourites and traditional in my extended family (I have a family recipe). This is the first year I'm doing the desserts, so am nervous about it.

we have roast turkey,roast potatoes,sprouts and chestnuts,another two veg,sausages(sometimes in bacon depending on how organised i am)georgeous gravy made with the giblets,pork and sage and onion stuffing,cranberry sauce.Usually make bread sauce for the in laws,though I think its yuk.
Have to buy a christmas pud for fil, as he's the only one who likes it...last year he didn't even end up eating it!
don't you just leftover sandwiches the next day? Turkey,stuffing,and cranberry sauce..mmmmmm.

GOOSE- TURKEY TASTES LIKE SHITE! and its an americanism and NOT the english traditional festive fodder.
And I refuse to cook it in this house. We had roast beef with all the trimmings last year, as a goose wouldnt feed 17. This year as its only the 5 of us we'll be doing a brace of pheasants with all the usual extras.

Turkey can be bland and dry, especially if you buy a cheap frozen one, but if you get a beautiful fresh organic bronze-feathered one from Waitrose (not that they leave the feathers on, that would be weird!) it is delicious.
