Following day packed lunch ideas with no fridge

I am travelling somewhere the day before an event. I'll be staying in a hotel with no fridge or ability to heat anything other than a kettle. No food shops will be open near the hotel, and the event has no onsite or nearby catering. What can I take for a packed lunch which would be safe the following day?
Usually at this time of year im happy to leave marg, ham. cheese etc overnight in the car boot and make sandwiches . Or pork pies, pasta salad etc But I won’t have a car with me this time. plus will need to repeat the same later in the year when it would be too warm for that so need ideas for then too.
I once took one of those pasta and tuna lunch pots with a foil lid and it was vile. I considered taking a flask and pot noodles, but that’s not really something I'd normally eat. And maybe a couple of tea cakes and some marg. I’m sure marg will be fine by the window overnight but wouldn’t want to risk meat or cheese.

I will take fruit. I’d appreciate any other ideas else I can see me scoffing crisps, cake and biscuits all day as I won’t be having breakfast at the hotel.
Thank you

Bagels with peanut butter or primula

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/01/2022 08:37

Bagels are a good shout thank you. I could take a little pot of jam and have one for breakfast too.
I love peanut butter but last time I was at a similar event we were asked not to eat nuts as another attendee was severely allergic. Wouldn't want to risk that happening again.
Primula reminds me of my childhood! Would it be ok out of the fridge for a day and a half ? Actually I could take a couple of dairylea triangles to spread on bread rolls then there'd be no waste, I could leave the rest at home in the fridge. I'm sure they'd keep ok on the windowsill overnight.
For this event anyway, not do much later in the year.. Thanks for the ideas.

I like the John West pot of cous cous and tuna with chilli and garlic which you add hot water too though it does smell a bit!

moodymary · 16/01/2022 08:37

Could you take a small lunch bag/cool bag with an ice pack in? Maybe you could freeze a pint of milk before you go, put that in the bag and use that for tea/coffee. I’d take chopped up salad veg, and some cheese.. Then I’m sure the microwaveable rice/grain pouches are ready to eat so could you mix one with the salad. You’d need to take Tupperware and a fork though.
Also take proper breakfast stuff - instant porridge pot just needs boiling water, fruit, a pastry... then you’ll be less hungry at lunchtime.

Thank you - will love ok out for that and maybe try it before hand, don't want anything too smelly as will need to eat it around other people!

I don't think cheese is going to be a problem not being in a fridge? I can understand why you wouldn't want to risk meat but cheese would be fine.

moodymary · 16/01/2022 08:41

Also, if you bake at all, there is a recipe on bbc good food for oat bars that don’t contain nuts. I often make them for dcs for school. They have oats and dried fruit in so quite filling, would be good to supplement lunch,

dudsville · 16/01/2022 08:43

I don't know the brand, but my sainsbury sell packets of seasoned with lentils or lentils and kidney beans. One is in a French style tomato sauce the other... I can't recall how they describe the seasoning, but they are both delicious. It'd take these with some Jacobs crackers.

NannyR · 16/01/2022 08:44

Hard boiled eggs are ok at room temp for a day or two, if you leave the shells on - if you can get a couple of mayo sachets you could do egg mayo sandwiches, ditto tuna mayo if you get a single serve tin of tuna.

Great suggestions thank you. Yes was planning g on taking a small cool bag. I was thinking of freezing fruit juice cartons to keep things cool overnight then I can drink them once defrosted. I don't mind tea or coffee black . Porridge pots are a great idea and I wouldn't mind eating that during the day too. Thank you

Hard cheese and butter would both be fine out of the fridge (our butter lives on the side for the week or so it takes us to eat a packet).
Tin of tuna or corned beef or Spam, salad, bagels or pitta bread or wrap or crackers. Tubes of cheese or meat paste.

I'd freeze a tortilla and stick it in a mini cool bag to slowly defrost

That sounds like exactly what I'm looking for, thank you. Will take a look - where is Sainsburys would I find them?

What about those little jars of fish/meat paste? I take potted salmon with me when I camp as it doesn't need a fridge.

Slightly healthier snacks like mini malt loaf, nakd bars, muesli bars.

All bread products will be fine

If you like hot dogs, take a jar with yiu, and a thermos, in the morning boil the kettle pop the hotdogs in the thermos, fill with boiling water, by lunchtime they will be fine to eat. Done this several times in days out.

A little jar of paste is a good idea, again reminds me of my childhood. Not sure I'd be able to eat a whole tin of spam or corned beef but thank you for all your suggestions

You could cook some noodles, cool them down and add a dressing of sesame oil, soy etc and some finely sliced vegetables. Could add some tofu slices.

Yes I definitely think I will take a jar of paste. Will be particularly useful when it's warmer. Thank you.

What a great idea! Not ideal for this situation but I can think of occasions when that would be great.

Do you think noodles would be ok out of the fridge for over 24 hours (although in a cool bag?) oil based dressing a good idea

I assume the hotel has a restaurant? Can you ask if they could provide a packed lunch?
