Soup Maker

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has bought a soupmaker and do they feel that it is an worthy investment? I recently changed job and due to being in the middle of no where I need to bring lunch with me. I like the idea of coming home and throwing a few ingredients into the soup maker and in about 20 mins have lunch sorted for the next couple of days. Considering one with a saute function and self clean function.

Placemarking for advice! I've read that the ones that sautée are harder to clean?

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/12/2021 17:35

I’ve got the compact morphy Richards one, I never sauté and it’s brilliant. Bit of a faff to clean because you can’t put it in the dishwasher but it’s really good.

woodhill · 29/12/2021 17:38

I love my compact one and do sauté in a pan

crazyjinglist · 29/12/2021 17:40

I've never used one, but tbh I don't really understand the point. Surely soup that can be made in 20 minutes in a machine can also be made in 20 minutes in a pan? It doesn't chop things does it? Is its only benefit that it cooks and blends in the same container, rather than needing a pan and a blender? Just wondering if I'm missing something...

woodhill · 29/12/2021 17:43

It saves having to wait to down to cool to liquidise and reheat the soup and it blends brilliantly

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/12/2021 17:45

It blends the soup really well and it just tastes nicer than soup done in a pan.

thestarvingcaterpillar · 29/12/2021 17:47

I have the Breville one and I can honestly say it's my most used kitchen gadget I love it & use it at least once a week to make a batch of soup!

coolcahuna · 29/12/2021 17:47

I've got one and it's brilliant. Just chuck it all in raw , it's much better than making it in the pan. I used it 2 times a week at least. My kids will eat anything from it as it's so smooth.

woodhill · 29/12/2021 17:51

Yes a relative had really appreciated me making it when unwell

Apple40 · 29/12/2021 18:01

We got one for Christmas it’s great, quick chop of veggies, add some water and 20 mins later you have soup. It can make creamed soup, Chunky soup , purée fruit etc, keep warm function and it’s self cleans.

Georgyporky · 29/12/2021 18:22

I've had 2 - a Morphy Richards sauté, & an expensive Lakeland.
First lasted a month, 2nd about 6 months. Both refunded thankfully.
Not worth it - saucepan is really just as easy as prep is the same.

This is what I think so interesting to see the responses. Pan of veg & a stick blender. No extra gadget to clean/store.

those that have a soup maker, did you used to make soup in a pan previously or never bother before?

DramaAlpaca · 29/12/2021 18:25

I do love a gadget but this is one I'd never buy. A saucepan and a hand blender is all the equipment you need for soup.

GameofPhones · 29/12/2021 18:30

Agree all you need is a pan and a stick blender. Does this gadget cut out the chopping or sauteing stage or something? I can't see the advantage that compensates for space taken up on your worktop (or the money).

CHEM20 · 29/12/2021 18:31

Used to use pan and stick blender.

Far nicer and easier (yes really) results with a soup maker.

SundayTeatime · 29/12/2021 18:33

Another one who doesn’t see the point. A saucepan and a stick blender is all you need. I make soup often.

Stormyinacoffeemug · 29/12/2021 18:35

I have a morphy richards one and tbh it was a waste of money. It makes a much smaller amount than usual and to me things like carrot or new potato are not cooked enough so I have to run it again. Plus, it doesn't perform well with lentil soup which is what I used to make a lot of. I think I've used mine 3 times in the 2 years I've had it.

humdingle · 29/12/2021 18:53

I always find it funny when people say that you just need a pan and a stick blender 😂

I used to be one of those people who couldn't see the point. Having a soup maker is actually very different to using a pan and a blender - it's a lot more hands-off and more convenient.

With a soup maker, you can literally chuck ingredients in, select how smooth/chunky you want it and then go to a different room in your house and not return until the soup is ready. A pan needs a bit of babysitting (or at least being checked a couple of times) and then you would have to spend a few minutes blending it. Of course those things are easy to do, but they are hands-on so less convenient than a soup maker. A soup maker also seems to make smooth soups more uniformly smooth than my stick blender, so the results are better too.

Definitely in my top 5 kitchen gadgets.

CheshireChat · 29/12/2021 19:38

I have the ninja one ninja, it's expensive but I love it. You can cook sauces and other stuff in it as well and it also chops/can sautée stuff.

I've had the Aldi one which was cheap, but stopped working and the Morphy Richards which can also sautée, however that was incredibly temperamental and broke within a year Hmm. Not cheap either.

GameofPhones · 29/12/2021 19:41

But in the pan you can add taste and add flavourings which, IMHO are essential for good-tasting soup.

GameofPhones · 29/12/2021 19:44

Sorry, that should have been - in the pan you can taste.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 29/12/2021 19:44

I don’t cool the soup before I use the hand blender. I like to live life on the edge….

crazyjinglist · 29/12/2021 19:51

I don't either Dobby! I find that the thing you need to remember not to do is rinse the hot blender jug straight afterwards with cold water (crrrrrack!)

I love making soup but don't make it as often as I'd like to. I'm almost swayed by the positive comments, but I've already got quite enough gadgets that I don't use often enough to justify their purchase and the space they occupy though! Dh hates kitchen clutter and would be very Hmm!

humdingle · 29/12/2021 20:02

That's true, you could. However, I never used to do this, and my soups have always turned out really nice whichever way I do them. (Just not blended as well when by hand!)
DobbyTheHouseElk · 29/12/2021 20:15

I have a stick blender. It’s so quick. I make loads of soup. I’m a vegetarian so make “bottom of the fridge” soup regularly. Also use up random veg we grow that way. Always different, usually delicious. Bung it in and blend it. It’s so easy and good for you.

I love seeing what colour it comes out.
