Jar or homemade chilli con carne?

androiduser · 15/12/2021 08:10

If you use a jar which is best?

If you make from scratch, what are the ingredients you add?

Regardless of which approach you take, what else do you put in?

Garlic, mushrooms, onions, tomato, peppers, chilli pepper, - is that too much or am I missing anything obvious?

Def not mushrooms!

Youre missing kidney beans

fitzbilly · 15/12/2021 08:13

I make it from scratch.

I don't know if it's authentic though!

I use cumin, chili flakes, chipotle chillies, smoked paprika and cocoa powder. And lots of garlic.

AgnesNaismith · 15/12/2021 08:16

Homemade super easy!

Fry mince, onions, add hot chilli powder, kidney beans (in chilli sauce for depth), tinned tomatoes, oxo cube, oven for 45, add peppers (two different colours at least), back in over for 20…done!

Onions, various peppers, beef, a variety of beans. Cumin, paprika, chipotle, adobe chillis, chopped tomatoes. Simmer for a couple of hours.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 15/12/2021 08:20

I use the packets of chilli seasoning powder rather than jars of sauce. That said, it's pretty easy from scratch:

Onions, red and green peppers, mince, kidney beans, garlic, tinned tomatoes, chilli powder, cumin, stock cube, splash of balsamic vinegar

The cumin is surprisingly important for a warm depth of flavour

violetbunny · 15/12/2021 08:21

Definitely not mushrooms. Yes to dark chocolate though!

SalonSharon · 15/12/2021 08:23

Cumin, chili powder, oregano, smoked paprika, beef, kidney beans, tomato, peppers, chillies, stock cube.

NotTheGrinchAgain · 15/12/2021 08:24

The packet spice mixes are better than the ready-made jars.

It's really easy and cheap to make however. I always use double the recommended amount of tinned tomatoes and kidney beans. I don't put mushrooms in, but I do include red pepper. Quorn mince works well in place of beef, too.

If you like your chilli hot, you can get cans of kidney beans in chilli sauce which add oomph.

My DH swears that adding a few cubes of Dairy Milk chocolate is essential - i can see it adds a little sweetness to offset the spice, but no one in my house complains when I miss it out!

itwasntaparty · 15/12/2021 08:26

Your recipe is more like a Bologna's with a but of chilli powder.

Get a packet mix of chilli, fry onion, brown mince, add chilli mix, water / tinned toms / kidney beans.

Chocolate is a thing in chilli - mole - but not dairy milk!

I use a Texas type recipe.

ClearButtons · 15/12/2021 08:34

Cumin is essential in my chilli. Plus tomato paste to thicken the 'gravy' - hate a watery chilli!
Usually mine contains - mince, onion, garlic, chilli powder, cumin, ground coriander, beef stock, tinned toms, tomato paste, pinch of sugar, black pepper, mixed herbs, kidney beans/chick peas, red pepper

itsutterlyshit · 15/12/2021 08:37

I use the hairy bikers recipe and add fresh chilli I also add a bit more chilli powder as it's quite mild. I also add mushrooms but then I use mushrooms in most things because I love them

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 15/12/2021 08:40

I make from scratch as it is nicer and no more difficult.

Chop onions, chillis, garlic and fry. Add mince. Sprinkle of cumin and paprika, add a beef stock cube. When the mince is browned add pasata or tinned chopped tomatoes, maybe a bit of tomato puree and simmer. While simmering add drained kidney beans. Adjust seasoning. Simmer until thickened.

You can add peppers, lentils anything else you fancy.

Mince
Tinned Tomatoes
Mixed taco beans in tomato sauce
Onion
Pepper
Old El Paso powder sachet

Sometimes baked beans depends if it’s for the kids.

ancientgran · 15/12/2021 09:07

Chilli is easy to make from scratch, to the list of ingredients in previous posts I always add some chopped up celery. I love celery.

JustLikea · 15/12/2021 09:08

No mushrooms because chilli doesn't have them in any recipe

ancientgran · 15/12/2021 09:08

I also like sour cream on my chilli, if I haven't got any I put some natural yogurt on it.

violetbunny · 15/12/2021 09:22

Mushrooms just don't belong in a chilli recipe, they're not a traditional ingredient. Dishes are at least loosely defined by their ingredients, adding mushrooms makes it something else that's not chilli IMHO.

WildStallyn · 15/12/2021 09:24

Lots of cumin, smoked paprika, kidney beans and a couple of squares of dark chocolate are essential imo.

ihavespoken · 15/12/2021 09:28

ehhh.. I just put whatever veg are lying around in the fridge - often including mushrooms Shock

Surely it's the chilli seasoning that makes it chilli?

Agree the packet mix is better than a jar if you are not making from scratch.
Making from scratch is easy though - I roughly follow this recipe, as in use the spices they suggest, but as I am lazy I wouldn't use fresh chillies and would put a little squirt of garlic paste in rather than fresh garlic.

Just chuck everything in the slow cooker raw and leave it for a few hours.

trickytrudy · 15/12/2021 16:35

A shot of espresso, dark chocolate (sometimes with chilli), cinnamon, chipotle chilli flakes.

Hoppinggreen · 15/12/2021 17:37

I like mushrooms but but I would never put them in chilli
However, it’s up to you I suppose
