I just wondering. Someone at my Work Christmas Lunch, said that is it considered to be the best.
And is there one in particular ?
Which country, which supermarket stocks it, how much - details please ?

I don't think this is received wisdom.

Champagne is a dry white though

MummyDoItUnderTheMistletoe · 14/12/2007 17:44

It's nice but towards the bottom end of the white wine market, to be honest. You're talking £3-£4 per bottle. If you want something special, go for a Chablis (anything between £6-£9 a bottle) or a Petit Chablis (slightly cheaper). You can also buy White Burgundy which is exactly the same wine, just not the Chablis label. It's slightly cheaper.

i think i'm allergic to pinot grigio, last time i had it my throat swelled up and my face turned beetroot red.

CremolaFirCone · 14/12/2007 17:47

rather a nice Sancerre or vouvray.Even a good gewurztraminer

Pinit Grigio the best ww ever?
no-o-o-o-o-o
Not by a long chalky s facing slope!

Chablis, pouille fume, pouilly fuisse, for choie,
sancerre is nicer than the (now) ubiquitous pinot grigio.

But pg is very drinkable and enjoyable.

dustystar · 14/12/2007 17:49

I prefer sauvignon blanc myself. I think its purely a matter of taste tbh.

My absolute fav is New Zealand Malborough Sauv blanc.

AwayInAMunker · 14/12/2007 17:49

I like Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc.

Or the cheaper Kaduna (I think) Hills from M&S, also Sauvignon Blanc.

SantaBeClausImWorthIt · 14/12/2007 17:50

I'm with you, dustystar

AwayInAMunker · 14/12/2007 17:50

I like PG though - goes down too very easily.

Not a huge fan of Chardonnay though - can be v carpety tasting.

dustystar · 14/12/2007 17:51

Cheers santa

I'm drinking a rather nice one now as i am celebrating passing my exam

DarthVader · 14/12/2007 17:52

pouille fume is lovely

SantaBeClausImWorthIt · 14/12/2007 17:52

Congratulations!

I'm just about to go and buy some champagne actually as dh has finished work for Christmas. (Sadly I don't finish until next Thursday, but it's a good excuse for some Champagne!)

I'm hoping dh will bring some back from work when he comes. He said he would give me a special surprise and i'm just hoping its champers and chocolates and not him naked with a bow round his willy

noddyholder · 14/12/2007 17:56

I love white rioja atm

ImBarryScott · 14/12/2007 18:07

somes pinot grigio can be a bit ...um...watery.
I like a viognier for general in-house quaffing, and either a chablis or an albarino (I know it's spanish, but try it) when out.

soapbox · 14/12/2007 18:17

Blu wrote my post for me

Don't get me wrong, I love a glass (or two) of pinot grigio on a summer evening, but it is far from the best white wine in the world!

I'd go for a Meursault or Chassagne-Montrachet, a premier cru Chablis, Sancerre, NZ cloudy bay SB and a few more that I can't think of right now

Oblomov · 14/12/2007 18:17

Mummyundertable , is it really £3 a bottle ? What sort of 'hock' can you expect to get for that ?
I have enjoyed quite a few PG's. And I do prefer S American & S African & Oz wines more than French. I don't like German wine.
But, I did think that PG was a bit lower market, so was shocked when she said it.
But thought they may be a South American version, that I might be missing out on.
Not knowing that much about wine, I was unable to make any comment to her statement.

I like Viognier too! And I like dry reisling and verdicchio and Gavi de Gavi and LOTs of others.
I would be unlikely to turn my nose up at a chilled glass of PG but it wouldn't ever be my first choice.

Pinkchampagne · 14/12/2007 18:20

I like a nice glass of pinot, but not sure that it's the best wine ever - I'm sure there are lots better!

noddyholder · 14/12/2007 18:23

Love viognier always seem to have it at weddings

dustystaronthechristmastreeMSC · 14/12/2007 18:24

have a look in Aldi - they do some really nice wines much cheaper than supermarkets
