Cinnamon porridge help

Currently dieting and have quaker original porridge sachets for breakfast. When I add cinnamon it Doesn't really taste of anything, is this because I'm not adding sugar? Can anyone help?

To add, I am eating it but it is very very bland.

It would taste of cinnamon if you add cinnamon…

Porridge without sugar is quite bland to start with. The sachets do have added sugar, I think. Can you not have normal oats and add fresh fruit, dried coconut, peanut butter…

Imtoooldforallthis · 21/08/2021 07:34

I usually add banana or frozen fruit, however I have run out. I added a teaspoon of cinnamon (new jar) hoping for that comforting bakery smell, but very disappointing.

Is your cinnamon very old? Spices can lose their flavour over time.

Howtotameyourtoddler · 21/08/2021 07:35

How much cinnamon are you adding? You shouldn't need to add sugar. But those sachets are a bit of a waste of money - you could just buy a bag of oats? My favourite porridge in autumn/winter is cinnamon and raisin, with chopped apple, pumpkin seeds and a tiny bit of honey on top. It keeps me going until lunchtime!

DuchessSilver · 21/08/2021 07:36

Oh just seen it's a new jar. That lovely comforting bakery smell is mostly sugar rather than cinnamon I think!

forgottenforest · 21/08/2021 07:38

Use sugar free syrup

Imtoooldforallthis · 21/08/2021 07:42

Oh will look out for the syrup. So all you experts I like the sachets as they are quick and convenient, I'm up at six in the morning and it helps that I don't have to weigh and measure out . So what are your easiest ways of making single portion of porridge. Not keen on overnight oats.

Try "sweet" cinnamon. I got a jar from Tesco (own brand) and it tastes lovely in porridge and bakes.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 21/08/2021 07:44

I can't help with the cinnamon situation but thought I'd put my favourite overnight oats recipe below. I mix together the dry ingredients into 5 cereal bowl sized tipper containers on Sunday then add the wet ingredient for each one the night before. I can grab and go then or if I want it hot I just stir some extra milk through and pop it in the microwave. It keep you full until lunch, is quick and is better for you then the sachets as you know exactly how much sugar is in it.

â…“ cup oats plus
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon chia seeds
1 tablespoon peanut butter
½ cup milk (you could use apple juice here if making apple and cinnamon porridge)
½ cup fruit (I like banana)
Drizzle of honey,

JustAnotherFuckingMonday · 21/08/2021 07:45

How about getting the cinnamon flavoured packets?

RickOShay · 21/08/2021 07:46

One and a bit handfuls is a decent sized bowl for me. I think the sachets are a bit stingy. Could you add a bit of honey?

purplesequins · 21/08/2021 07:46

do you have/have you had covid?
yes to adding dried fruit. or a little ground almond. cinnamon on it's own is 'just' spicey.

I personally like to add a little ground ginger as well.

and yes to weighing out from a family bag of oats.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 21/08/2021 07:46

Apologies for the spelling mistakes

  • tipper is tupperware
  • I don't know where the oats plus came from, just oats.

I like to measure in cups as it's so quick and easy compared to using scales.

VikingNorthUtsire · 21/08/2021 07:47

You can microwave porridge using just oats and milk. V quick and easy. TBH I do mine by eye, and everyone likes their porridge different anyway, but try measuring it into a bowl using a cup. Twice as much liquid as oats. 2 mins in the microwave is enough for me, but you probably need to experiment a bit with proportions and timings to get the combination that works for you

dudsville · 21/08/2021 07:47

If you're adding a teaspoon and not tasting it I think there's a problem, that's a hell of a lot of cinnamon for one bowl of porridge.

Newchallenge · 21/08/2021 07:48

More Cinnamon?

Imtoooldforallthis · 21/08/2021 07:49

Thank you all, I will try some of the suggestions.

Instead of the sachets weigh out raw oats once. When you’ve done that find something in your kitchen that is that amount, maybe a ladle full or something like that and you won’t have to weigh every day.

Although I don’t find it too much of a hassle to weigh daily. I have a small set of electronic kitchen scales and just put my bowl on them, zero the scales then add porridge.

For sweetness try adding a few raisins or a couple of dates with the cinnamon.

flipflopslap · 21/08/2021 07:56

Porridge is awful with no sugar IMO. Could you add some sweetener or xylitol to make it palatable?

Queenoftheashes · 21/08/2021 07:57

Add salt

user1471457757 · 21/08/2021 08:02

Sounds like a lot cinnamon. I add a sprinkle for two of us.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/08/2021 08:05

next time try ground nutmeg.

EastWestWhosBest · 21/08/2021 08:18

I agree that the sachets are a waste of money and resources.
I have a Gü ramekin that I use to measure. Literally one measure of oats then two of milk.

actiongirl1978 · 21/08/2021 08:21

I use three spoons of cinnamon with my porridge. I like it strong
