Air fryer worth it for a vegetarian?

I keep getting sucked in to talk about air fryers. We are vegetarian. Would it be worth it for us? What would you cook in it as a vegetarian?

I’ve just got one and I love it. Today I made pizzas out of wraps and defrosted and cooked some pancakes. I’ve also made/heated macaroni cheese balls, potato wedges, sweet potato fries, hashbrowns, veg tempura etc

Rollergirl1980 · 30/06/2021 15:36

Chips, chips and more chips!
Roast potatoes, roasted veg.
Boxed stuff like veggie burgers.
Jacket potatoes are brilliant.

Egghead68 · 30/06/2021 17:00

Oh yes - roasted veg. Made roasted butternut squash today in record time.

MegsSmeg · 30/06/2021 17:11

Thanks! So it's not just a fryer then? It's more like a quick working oven, if you can roast veg in it?? I just thought it replaced a deep fat fryer for things like chips etc!

Agree with all of the above. Halloumi is amazing, and we love air fried cubes of marinaded tofu (and we're all carnivores).
In fact we've used it mainly for vegetables. Chicken wings have been the main non-veg thing (amazing but not relevant to you!)
We also did some courgette chips which were fab

Georgyporky · 30/06/2021 17:17

I'm not veggie, but I use mine as an oven for anything that will fit in. Heats up quickly, & is far cheaper to run

Gorgeouslilgirl · 30/06/2021 17:19

@RockingMyFiftiesNot, could you please share your recipe for air fryer courgette chips? Many thanks

Taoneusa · 30/06/2021 17:20

Can I ask, what is the difference between roast veg in an air fryer, and ones done in the oven?

Apologies for potentially silly question, genuinely know nothing about this, but eat lots of roast veg!

I was going to post a link but can't remember which one I used first time online and now just make it up! https://gimmedelicious.com/air-fryer-zucchini-fries/ but this looks similar

Gorgeouslilgirl · 30/06/2021 17:36

Thanks! I’ll try it tonight

Makes good crispy tofu

Firstinlastout · 30/06/2021 18:05

Any recommendations for which air fryer to buy then please.?I've been thinking about getting one for ages but so much choice and how nice are the chips?Grin
So I've got a gas oven that's absolutely shite (it heats from the bottom so pies ,pizzas etc dont brown on the top)but I've not long bought it so stuck with it now!I bought a halogen oven to do pizzas ,pies and everything that my oven is shit at and I've got an electric fryer just used for home made chips.Could I possibly replace these two items with an air fryer?

You need to consider the size of the Air Fryer. I've got a Phillips, & it does lovely chips - but just enough for 2. It will only take a small pizza. My halogen oven died literally the day after the guarantee expired. I'd keep hold of both appliances until they died!
MegsSmeg · 30/06/2021 18:33

Oh wow, thank you! So it sounds like it would be worth getting one then. I like tofu. How would you do crispy tofu? Literally chop it up and put it in?? I am liking the sound of this!

Im on my second one now as the inside coating of the first one seemed to go all ‘bubbly’. I now have a Ninja one.

With tofu - just squeeze out all the water (I just pop it on a chopping board, on a slope into the sink, and leave it with a heavy pan on it) then marinade with a little oil, soya sauce, sesame seeds, ginger etc... then cube it and pop it in the air fryer for, maybe ten mins, or until it’s all crispy, oh yum.

Egghead68 · 30/06/2021 21:46

I have a ninja one and am happy with it so far. The main drawback is they are quite small.

Main difference is they cook more quickly
MegsSmeg · 30/06/2021 22:13

Thanks all. I've decided to take the plunge and buy one. The thought of courgette chips and crispy tofu is too much! Now need to decide which one to get. They seem to vary in price from £50 to £300 Confused

I have an instapot with an air fryer. It is small for an air fryer, but I like having the instapot functions as well.

I made courgette fries tonight. I salted courgettes. Then tossed them in an almond flour and rice flour mix with some Cajun spice. And air fried for 15 minutes. Served with a yogurt dip with harissa,, garlic, herbs.

DH loved them. I thought they could be crisper. The dip was ace though!

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 30/06/2021 22:23

The Ninja is amazing if you can afford it.

BobbyGentry · 30/06/2021 22:30

I use it like an oven
Pitta bread 🥙 from scratch
Vegetarian proteins (anything crunchy is excellent)
Pizzas
Chips 🍟
Bung anything in really 😊

Gorgeouslilgirl · 30/06/2021 22:37

Ooh @BobbyGentry. How. Do you make pitta bread in the air fryer?

BobbyGentry · 01/07/2021 00:46

@Gorgeouslilgirl

Pitta

Ingredients 250g/9oz strong white flour, plus extra for dusting
1 x 7g sachet instant yeast
1 tsp salt 160ml/5½fl oz water 2 tsp olive oil, plus extra for kneading

Method

  1. In a bowl, mix together the flour, yeast, and salt. Add 120ml/4fl oz of the water and 1½ teaspoons of oil. Using your fingers mix the ingredients together. Gradually add the remaining water and oil until all the flour has come away from the sides and you have a soft dough. (You may not need all the water; the dough should be soft and not sticky.)
  2. Pour a little oil onto your work top. Place the dough on top and knead for 5-10 minutes. The dough will be wet in the beginning but will form a smooth dough once kneaded. Once a smooth dough is achieved, place it into a clean, oiled bowl. Cover and leave to prove until doubled in size.
  3. Preheat the Airfryer and place a clean baking paper.
  4. When the dough has doubled in size, tip it out onto a work surface dusted with flour. Knock the dough back by folding it inwards over and over again until all the air is knocked out. Split the dough into 4-6 equally sized balls. Roll each ball into an oval shape 3-5mm thick.
5.Dust with flour and place the pitta breads on it. You may have to cook them in batches.
  1. Bake for 5-10 minutes, or until they just start to colour. Remove them from the Airfryer and cover with a clean cloth until they are cool.

Recipe taken from web (substitute the word oven for Airfryer) but just bung them in a hot air fryer, they puff up in no time. I make in batches then freeze excess. Reheat using the toaster.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 01/07/2021 00:52

I’ve got a ninja pot, pressure cooker and air fryer in one. Potatoes wedges, put peeled cut wedges in water. Pressure cook for 3 min. Mix garlic, salt, pepper with olive oil in a bowl. Tip potatoes into bowl and cover in oil. Air fry for 20 minutes. Gorgeous

Gorgeouslilgirl · 01/07/2021 04:41

Thanks so much @BobbyGentry.
