Roasted a chicken today. Took it out of oven at 2pm and covered it with foil. Came home at 7pm and realised I'd forgotten to put it In the fridge. Would you eat it??

OP posts:

No I wouldn't risk it. Doesnt it.have to be chilled within a certain time.

ceeveebee · 27/06/2021 20:17

Yes I would

Dillydollydingdong · 27/06/2021 20:17

Yes no problem. So long as it's covered and safe from flies, it'll be fine. It's not even particularly hot today.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/06/2021 20:18

Wouldn't think twice tbh. Unless your kitchen was extremely hot, had cockroaches etc.

Treezan82 · 27/06/2021 20:18

Absolutely.

Benjispruce3 · 27/06/2021 20:18

Yep as long as it was not open to flies.

aneres · 27/06/2021 20:19

Definitely, it would have taken a few hours to cool completely anyway.

RickiTarr · 27/06/2021 20:19

Yes, it’ll be fine. Five hours isn’t much more than the cooking time, really. It’s not like leaving it overnight.

Alternatively, reheat it until it’s piping and eat it hot.

Arbadacarba · 27/06/2021 20:19

What's your weather been like? If it's been cool, I would have no problem eating it.

Evvyjb · 27/06/2021 20:19

Yep

Oblomov21 · 27/06/2021 20:20

Of course. Why would you not? Hmm

GreyhoundG1rl · 27/06/2021 20:20

Yes.

Northernsoullover · 27/06/2021 20:21

Nope. I'm an Environmental health officer if it helps.

Mummyme87 · 27/06/2021 20:21

Yep. No issue eating most things that have been left out

hagsrus0 · 27/06/2021 20:21

Yes, if the cat hasn't got there first.

FlowerArranger · 27/06/2021 20:22

Yes. In fact I just did.

How did people ever survive in the days before best before/use by dates, and without fridges?

Pinkchocolate · 27/06/2021 20:22

Of course.

HeReWeGoAgAiN1112 · 27/06/2021 20:23

I’d eat it

Jericha · 27/06/2021 20:24

If it's been covered I definitely would.

GreyhoundG1rl · 27/06/2021 20:26

@Northernsoullover

Nope. I'm an Environmental health officer if it helps.
Seriously? Does no one ever take a picnic anywhere these days? Or send kids off with a packed lunch? Food doesn't completely spoil in 5 hours.
thecognoscenti · 27/06/2021 20:30

Of course. It'll be absolutely fine. I wonder how some people get through life TBH.

Daisydoesnt · 27/06/2021 20:30

No way! 2 hours is the time window in which you want to get get food cold enough to then go in the fridge. And something high risk like chicken left at room temperature? You knock yourself out but there’s no way I’d eat it.

And to the pp who commented about picnics - I’d have any high risk items in a cool bag and things like fruit or salad or bread unchilled in a basket. And as for Packed lunches that can’t be kept chilled? It’s going to be cheddar cheese and pickle sandwiches then!

DogsSausages · 27/06/2021 20:31

All the advice I have read is that.freshly cooked.chicken should be refrigerated within 2 hours as the bacteria.grow much quicker between 40 and 140F. i cant link but the NHS website has a storage of foods page

SkyeIsPink · 27/06/2021 20:32

Been there, done that (many times), still here!

Backhills · 27/06/2021 20:33

Yes
