Wheat free, dairy free dinner party

PetitFilou1 · 15/11/2007 14:36

Help please - we've got a couple coming over for dinner in a couple of weeks time and my friend is gluten and lactose intolerant (to the extent that she throws up an hour later if she eats anything with a reasonable amount of either in). To make things even more complicated I am 'vegetarian'(don't eat meat but do eat fish and shellfish). Can anyone give me some ideas as to what to cook and where to find a good recipe?

grilled salmon or fish would be nice then - do an oil based marinade

RubySlippers · 15/11/2007 14:40

see - i am clueless ...

MrsBadger · 15/11/2007 14:40

well for pudding you need do do the Nigella almond cake:

Whisk 6 egg yolks with 200g caster sugar till creamy, fold in 200g ground almonds and the zest of a lemon.
Whisk 6 egg whites in a anotehr bowl, beat a spoonful of white into the yolks and then fold the rest in gently.
Pour into a 1.5l tin (she uses a brioche tin but I don't have one so use a ring mould thing) and bake 1hr 160 C
Serve with fruit, or fruit compote (ie bag of frozen fruit cooked in saucepan till mushy) or coulis (as above then liquidise or sieve)

Brangelina · 15/11/2007 14:42

Polenta is cornmeal, so yes, she can eat it.

Peachy · 15/11/2007 14:44

jacket potatoes with smoked salmon and mayo

(you can make mini ones for a starter as well which can be quite nice)

GF pasta readil;y available so any seafood and linguine no cream type pasta is fine

DF natural yoghurt freely available and a good abse for sauces if you don't want mayo (get any mayoo from special diets section as many have thickeners)- the yoghurts is an excellent base for a curry

Puds easy- berries with dark chocolate (many are naturally DF)

salade nicoise

Brangelina · 15/11/2007 14:44

Rice? something like mushroom risotto and people can grate on their own cheese, or even better seafood risotto, so no cheese allowed.

MrsBadger · 15/11/2007 14:46

salmon teriyaki with sticky or jasmine rice

or thai gren curry with fish and prawns in, and sticky rice

or just good old fish pie

Brangelina · 15/11/2007 14:48

Avocado and tomato salad for a starter,
followed by a seafood risotto,
followed by oven baked fish of some sort baked in olive oil, lemon and dill accompanied by a green salad,
fresh fruit crumble (topping made with millet flakes and ground hazelnuts) with a fruit coulis rather than custard.

chopchopbusybusy · 15/11/2007 14:51

Grilled salmon (marinated in Tamari, which is gluten free soy sauce, ginger, honey and lemon juice) served with new potatoes and vegetables.

The Nigella cake sounds lovely.

You can buy Swedish Glace in most supermarkets, which is soya milk, gluten free ice cream.

A simple lentil or tomato soup for starters? Just don't use cream and if you must thicken it (I never do) use cornflour.

EmsMum · 15/11/2007 14:53

curries - one seafood, one veggie with rice.
Is yog ok for lactose intolerance? If not, make one curry tomatoey and the other with coconut milk.

PetitFilou1 · 15/11/2007 14:58

Thanks everyone, lots of ideas. I know she sounds like a pain but she isn't. Mrs B thanks v much for the Nigella recipe will definitely do that, not sure about the rest yet will read this properly later.

Yoghurt not ok (sadly- ds1 / ds3 and I all df.... ds1 also GF)
but there are so many alternatives around these days you'd be amazed!

SquiffyonSnowballs · 15/11/2007 17:00

Starter fresh tuna - grill 30 seconds each side, squeeze of lime over them and some cracked pepper, serve with lime & pineapple salsa and side salad

Mains: roast & trimmings, or tomato-based curry, or Moroccan Tagine

Pudding: selection of sorbets, or baked apples, stuffed with raisons, cinnamon, nutmeg, and doused in a liquer of your choice (we use Grand Marnier). Or perhaps Baked Apples and sorbet

MrsBadger · 15/11/2007 17:22

squiffy

she's veggie

SquiffyonSnowballs · 15/11/2007 17:28

Blimey, missed that one.

I would go for a moroccan tagine-like veggie stew then, or sweet potato curry

Or baked potato.

winegumss · 15/11/2007 17:41

salmon wraped (or monk fish)in parma ham with lentils - in one of the old jamie oliver books, leave the parma ham off yours or any other veggies and serve with crusty bread warmed rolls or new potatoes and some green beans . as a starter just hand round some nibbles so one can choose, eg smoked salmon rolled or on brown bread, chilly prawns -from m and s are ok or just a a hot chillie sauce to some , other veg bits eg mini potatoes filled with cream cheese, can she have goats cheese? rye bread with soem goats cheese and tiny bit of tomato on top i can think of lots of others rye bread with smoked trout on top or terriaki tuna, quails eggs??? you could even do some mini sausages for the others - just raost for 20 mins or so, and some dips and raw veg - making some dips with no lastose in - pesto, homous?. most are full after that and a main. someone said apsta - that is made of flour - wheat , cant use that.

flamingtoaster · 15/11/2007 17:54

You've got lots of lovely suggestions so far but if you want more you look under the various recipe categories here you will find lots of vegetarian/wheatfree/glutenfree recipes.

coeliac.info/suppboard/

mostly posted by Lyn who is an excellent cook and a vegetarian coeliac. All you would have to do is change any milk if there was any.

Peachy · 15/11/2007 18:07

pasta is fine if GF- every supermarket sells that now

Pannacotta · 15/11/2007 18:08

Brangelina's menu sounds mouth watering!
You can buy gluten free flour at Waitrose if you decide you need to use a recipe with flour.

pagwatch · 15/11/2007 18:10

And Swedish glace ice cream is lovely ( just serve with fruit) DS is really only one fully gfcf and yet we all eat it.

Good luck !

Unfitmother · 15/11/2007 18:11

I've got a SIL like that!

Risotto is always good or that special gluten-free pasta.

Peachy · 15/11/2007 18:11

You can indeed- remember baking powder ahs gluten in as well though! (and beware of breads such as rye- usually they contain some gluten ime)

hgravy is another one with hidden gluten unless made froms cratch- and the only thickener worth trusting is cornflour!

You can get some fab soya ice creams that might help as an accompaniment to dessert- Swedish glace, most supermarkets again. They're actually so nice that we eat them through choice now LOL! Soe asy with fruit or the yummy baked apple idea
