Hello Fresh or Gusto boxes?

Grumpylate20s · 09/04/2021 06:50

We've just had our first DS and I know my DW will be shattered when she comes out so I'll be doing the cooking and prepping as I have done througout her pregnancy.. So I wanna try these boxes out as I've heard good things, don't know which box to go for or which recipes are good..
All experience and advice, hints or tips greatly appreciated 🙂

I love Gousto, been getting a box weekly for about 2 years. It’s completely changed the way we eat - so much fresher and healthier and no more ready meals! It’s also really improved my cooking skills

MsSquiz · 09/04/2021 06:57

We used to use hello fresh but found they had a lot of repeated recipes so there wasn't much point in continuing when you can just reuse old recipe cards.
We've been using Gousto now for a while and definitely prefer it. There's lots of choice and they categorise their meals (5 min prep, 10 min meals, calorie controlled, etc as well as veggie & meat options)

I have a code that would get you 50% off your first box and 30% off your first month if you wanted to give them a try?

Definitely Gousto. We love them.

Blueberry40 · 09/04/2021 07:02

We’ve had both and prefer Gousto, although they were a bit more expensive. There was a wider selection of recipes and the cards make the recipes easier to replicate than Hello Fresh because they are clearer about quantities.

Felty · 09/04/2021 07:02

We’ve tried both. Gousto wins hands down. Bigger selection of recipes and better value.

donutosaurus · 09/04/2021 07:03

I want to love Gousto, but every single box has ingredients missing. We don't eat until late and discovering they've missed out an ingredient at 9pm is painful!

I've tried so many times, yet pretty much every time there's an error.

Mindful chef if much more reliable but has less choice than Gousto and is a bit more expensive.

That's been our experience with HF.

We’ve tried both and love Gousto more than Hello Fresh. New recipes to try weekly, easy to make and simple to follow.

Londonista123 · 09/04/2021 07:07

Gousto for me. Tried both, much prefer the variety on Gousto - they have a good selection of "10 minute meals" (ok, they take 15/20 minutes rather than 10, but still), and are great on meals/flavours from elsewhere in the world, much more so than HF that I found more British/European. So if you like Asian/Indian/Middle Eastern type flavours Gousto may be more your bag.

Anecdotally people on MN seem to complain more about HF missing ingredients, but I've found both fine with this.

I have a voucher code for 50% off then 30% off if anyone else wants to try them - Gousto code 50% off

This is my code for a FREE simply cook box with 4 recipe kits if anyone would like to try it...we really like simply cook and have been using for a year or so. Jambalaya and Nasi goreng our absolute faves...oh and the pastas too! 🙂

Londonista123 · 09/04/2021 07:09

I'd add though, OP, sometimes at that stage of things with a newborn it's fine to shove a ready lasagne in the oven, put some leaves next to it and call it a day Grin.

Congrats on your DS Flowers

MaryIsA · 09/04/2021 07:13

I used hello fresh. Wasn’t impressed with the quality of ingredients, choice of recipes and had items missing. Haven’t tried Houston.

Baker90 · 09/04/2021 07:14

Tried both and gousto is much better in my opinion. Had endless problems with hello fresh.

donutosaurus · 09/04/2021 07:15

Sorry, I totally missed that you have a newborn!

Congratulations! I have a 6 month old and we used cook ready meals - they're a more home made version of ready to cook meals! Taste great too but it may depend on where you live as I don't think they're available nationwide!!

stockpilingallthecheese · 09/04/2021 07:28

I use both and just pick whichever menu I prefer each week. You don't need to choose one and just stick to it!

HF does 5 recipes, Gousto only up to 4 but it's cheaper so we tend to do 4 meals for 4 people with them and 5 meals for 2 with HF for the same sort of price.

HF has more choice of fish and meats. Gousto has a lot of mince and basa Envy

Heyha · 09/04/2021 07:38

We've used Gousto, had one or two missing/quality issue items but would use again if we felt like it.
Hello Fresh you have to pay before you get to choose the stuff in your first box which annoyed me enough to ask them for a refund and didn't bother trying them.
Gousto has loads of really easy 10 minute things that taste good, we often use the recipe cards even though we've stopped having the boxes as have more time to shop at the moment.

yellowgecko · 09/04/2021 08:03

We've done both - HF is more generous with portion sizes so you can often eek out an extra helping for lunch the following day.
We often buy for 4 people then have the leftovers for lunch or dinner the next day.

Our baby is 4 months old and we've had boxes most weeks since birth! Check the timings of the recipes before you order, some are 10-15 min others can be up to 50 min. I think one of them is now doing more prepped options where the veg is cut up to save more time.

DH is the cook on our family and on the odd occasion where I've made the dinner, it's taken me twice as long as the card says Blush

Yeah I really like simply cook, the food is really tasty and fast to make (although you have to do your own food shopping most recipes only require 3 or 4 fresh things) Malay Laksa is amazing Grin

Aww thank you!

Well, thank you to all of you, you lovely bunch for the tips and discounts. I will be having the odd ready meal for now as mum and bub are still in hospital, maybe ill cook up something tonight i dunno..

I really enjoy cooking but dislike shopping at the moment and online slots are far and few between so these boxes will help im sure.

What are the servings like?? Im quite a hungry lad so I like to make more of in general.

We use both. I prefer Gousto as I feel they offer a better selection of meals and you can pause your subscription if you don’t want a box every week. With Hello Fresh you have to remember to go online and skip the weeks you don’t want a box.
We love that the food boxes get you to try new things as we tend to cook the same old meals each week. The recipes are easy to follow and really tasty.

LifeIsBusy · 09/04/2021 09:33

I would suggest pasta evangelists. I'm currently over 38 weeks pregnant with my second and the thought of cooking totally puts me off at the minute given the additional strain. .

It's fresh artisan pasta and you only need to heat up the sauces and cook the pasta so everything is ready in 5 mins. They have a 30% off for your first order and you can freeze it. It also helps that it tastes epic.

We thought about getting gousto (have had a few in the past) but decided against it as there is still a fair amount of cooking involved.

I got a box from pasta evangelists as I love pasta, it was extortionate if I'd paid the full price and was disgusting, thee taste wasn't pleasant at all. Angry

MrsKingfisher · 09/04/2021 09:55

I found my first few boxes with Gousto to be brilliant, lovely recipes perfect every time then after that every single box had ingredients missing and not ones you could substitute. We tried Hello Fresh, preferred their way of packaging much easier to grab the bag and cook however their recipes were hit and miss and at times undercooked even when following the recipe to the letter.

If Gousto sorted out their issue with always missing ingredients they'd be my favourite.
