Or just good old minced beef and onions?

nailpolish · 09/11/2007 15:42

burgers?
plain with mashed tatties?

ChubbyScotsBurd · 09/11/2007 15:42

Homemade burgers?

nailpolish · 09/11/2007 15:42

im cooking mince right now as it happens

one onion, halfed
carrots if you like
mince (half kilo)
brown, then add 400ml water mixed with a couple of teaspoons of bisto
half a stock cube if you like
simmer for an hour or so

nailpolish · 09/11/2007 15:47

we have ours like that with mashed tatties and sometimes turnip

LoveAngelGabriel · 09/11/2007 15:48

Stuffed peppers? Fry up the mince with onion, garlic, peppers, mushrooms, tomato, herbs (you can make it up as you go along, really, and use whatever you fancy). Mix the mince mixture in with some cooked rice, stuff it into bell beppers and roast in a hot oven for about half an hour.

We had this on the weekend - cooked mince with onions, tomatoes and kidney beans, with added cumin and oregano. Then laid out cheese, carrot, lettuce, salsa, corn etc with tortilla wraps and let the kids make their own little packages. You could spice this up or not as you wished, add sour cream etc.

phdlifeneedsanewlife · 09/11/2007 15:49

that sounds about right, thanks nailpolish. I've got some parsnips, might do them with the mash. and peas, got to use them up before the great defrosting event of '07...

TBH I just fry a chopped onion and then add the mince and let it fry off for a bit until it is all cooked. Sometimes add a bit of veg stock or tomato puree and Lea and Perrins to make a bit more gravy but I like it just how it comes. Nice with baked beans too.
Nigella has a thing in her book where you add some lentils and a bit of boiling water and this is nice too.
I wasn't sure what a rissole was

phdlifeneedsanewlife · 09/11/2007 15:51

oh florence, that's what dh said and it does sound good - I'm just off cumin/mexican flavours right now, no idea what that's about. Plus, no fixings!

scouse is a one pot dinner ,so mince ,onions, swedes, potatoes and peas all browned off and simmered in gravy (pref made with loads of bovril)

everyone does it differently , you use whatever veg you fancy

VanillaPumpkin · 09/11/2007 15:54

We would have mince and onions with mash and carrots and a green veg so parsnip mash and peas sounds perfect to me. A nice plain meal if you are feeling a bit odd about spices

phdlifeneedsanewlife · 09/11/2007 15:54

for me rissoles = chopped onion, bit of Lea & Perrins, egg, roll into balls, squash a little, fry. Did them with chips, baked beans and peas on Wednesday.

peas with everything these days

yeah it's funny since ds was born I've been right off rich/spicy food - would eat plain meat, potatoes and brussels sprouts or cabbage every night if I could. hope that wears off, can't believe I don't love chilli, curry, etc. any more!

Rissoles, burgers and meatballs are quite similar.

But for me rissoles are made with breadcrumbs or potatoes and is often a way of using up left over meat (from the Sunday roast for example).

Meatballs are cooked in tomato sauce.

DOn't like the sound of mince & onions (sorry). Reminds me of 'savoury mince' which was a regular feature of my secondary school dinner. Cottage pie would be me choice.
