Protein breakfasts but without eggs?

Hi all,

I'm trying to find a range of healthy (ish) protein based breakfasts, but without eggs as no one in our family likes them. Everything on the web just seems to bring them up when I search... does anyone have any ideas? Thank you!

You could make a smoothie with Greek Yoghurt, fruit and chia seeds?

hamstersarse · 20/03/2021 09:00

I’m amazed people don’t like eggs. They are the perfectly nutritionally balanced food. Perfect in the morning

Not even a cheesy omelette?

Spottybluepyjamas · 20/03/2021 09:09

No, can't stand them in any form I'm afraid!

Yoghurt, fruit & oats. Beans on toast.

ItsDinah · 20/03/2021 09:17

Milk and milk products are high in protein. An egg has around 6 or 7 grammes of protein while a glass of milk has around 8 grammes. Oatmeal is fairly high in protein. Those are the economical easy options. Yoghurts and nuts are also high in protein. Add nuts to oatmeal and you're on the way to museli which is another very easy breakfast. You can boost protein by adding skimmed milk power. Kippers, kidneys, smoked salmon on bagels with cheese, turkey sausages are more expensive high protein options.

What a daft thing to say! They're revolting I cannot stomach them at all.

Greek yoghurt op, ham and cheese roll ups, continental style breakfast

Dal?

zzizzer · 20/03/2021 09:22

If you Google "protein breakfasts without eggs" then lots of options come up, eg https://www.self.com/gallery/high-protein-breakfasts-that-arent-eggs or https://www.buzzfeed.com/hannahmars/not-eggcellent

Depends how much time you have to prepare and cook though! Some of those look like they have some serious prep time Grin

You could also try adding protein powder somehow?

Fivemoreminutes1 · 20/03/2021 09:38

Porridge with added nut butter or ground nuts and/or chia seeds. DS likes his porridge with a chopped banana and spoon of peanut butter. I like mine with a spoon of ground almonds and chopped dried apricots.
You can get even porridge sachets with added protein - I know Quaker has a range with added soy protein. We don’t both with those though. Personally I think the milk and nut/seeds are enough.

ChaToilLeam · 20/03/2021 09:49

I hate eggs too. Life would be easier if I liked them, but I can’t even force them down.

Greek yoghurt with berries is my normal morning go-to, but also bacon with mushrooms or tomatoes, and sardines on toast.

Palavah · 20/03/2021 09:51

Have you tried protein pancakes?

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 20/03/2021 09:52

Lots of good suggestions. To add a couple more

  • Protein pancakes
  • bacon, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans so basically a fry up without the egg 😄
Mominatrix · 20/03/2021 13:18

I agree about eggs - its the sulphurous yolk I find gross. If I have them for breakfast, I use just the whites.

Ideas I use for my athlete son- think most have been stated above already:

  • peanut butter/banana/greek yoghurt smoothie
  • smoked salmon and cream cheese on toast
  • porridge with peanut butter mixed in
  • breakfast burrito with brown rice, black beans, avocado, chicken, and cheese (I batch make these and place them in the freezer to defrost overnight as needed)
Spottybluepyjamas · 20/03/2021 15:46

Thanks guys! Loads of good suggestions 😊

Sardines, mackerel, or pilchards etc on toast.

CorvusPurpureus · 20/03/2021 17:26

Mushrooms cooked with garlic & butter until golden, then stir through sour cream, heat until bubbling & serve on granary toast.

Best for WFH mind you, if you've put nearly enough garlic in...

FusionChefGeoff · 20/03/2021 18:01

Porridge with linseed / flaxseed added on top gives it a good boost

InJest · 20/03/2021 19:05

Scrambled tofu is nicer than it sounds

Georgyporky · 20/03/2021 19:52

Any meat that you are prepared to cook, or defrost from frozen.

There's no reason why you can't eat what our forefathers used to eat, or what is regularly eaten in other cultures.

What’s being nutritionally balanced got to do with whether you like something??

And if you are trying to sell eggs ‘cheesy omelette’ is probably not going to do it...😂

TooMinty · 20/03/2021 20:02

Stop thinking of foods for particular times of day and just have whatever protein you like at breakfast time? Croissant with cheese and ham, dal with paneer and paratha, spinach and feta parcels etc. I have been known to have sushi for breakfast if I fancy it!

Fivemoreminutes1 · 21/03/2021 07:52

I love this recipe for homemade baked beans www.greatbritishchefs.com/recipes/vegan-baked-beans-recipe

applestamper · 21/03/2021 07:58

My go to is a bagel with peanut butter, probably higher in fat than protein but fills me up for longer than anything else does.

grassisjeweled · 21/03/2021 22:07

Cottage cheese and fruit salad

Peanut butter toast

GrumpyHoonMain · 21/03/2021 22:19

I’m Indian origin and I could write you a whole list because in India eggs are considered non-vegetarian. But the top 3 ones are:

  1. Moong dal Chilla - so, so easy to make. Just soak moong dal overnight (any type either the skinned or with skin) and then blend to a paste in the morning. Season. They make lovely savoury crepes and are ridiculously high in protein.
  1. Moong dal dhokla. Made in the same way as the pancakes but instead of frying the batter, you pour the mixture into a steamer (i put in small glass bowls in a manual steamer). They have the texture of polenta or semolina cake.
  1. Black beans pureed with sugar, banana, and chocolate is a lushious desert. You can add a little xanthum gum and refridgerate overnight for an amazing mousse. Black beans take any flavour but if you want to go sweet then opt for dried beans that you soak and boil yourself.
