In all my 33 years I have never perfected this. It's particularly driving me crazy tonight.

bread knife

?

oooggs · 06/11/2007 19:40

don't cut it just eat it

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 06/11/2007 19:40

Bree hovers, her malt loaf always looks most unBree like.

BTW it is lovely with extra mature cheddar.

Tinker · 06/11/2007 19:41

Buy it ready sliced

iota · 06/11/2007 19:41

use a very sharp knife

glammama · 06/11/2007 19:42

I used a bread knife! If I don't cut it the butter goes all over my face. I'm seriously wondering if I should buy an electric carving knife. I LOVE MALT LOAF. And I'm 5 months pregnant,

Not a bread knife, but you need a serrated knife - something like a citrus knife? Smaller serrates (?) than a bread knife. A sharp one. Then you saw gently.

glammama · 06/11/2007 19:42

You can buy it ready sliced??????

tigana · 06/11/2007 19:42

sharp bread knife...so you don't need to apply much pressure

glammama · 06/11/2007 19:44

Yep, I used a serrated veg knife too and it was very sharp. I even put the malt loaf on its side.
Am I to infer that no-one else has this problem and it's just me?

OP posts:
Tinker · 06/11/2007 19:45

No, I too have this problem. Hence buy ready sliced if I can

iota · 06/11/2007 19:45

have you tried a very sharp non serrated knife - eg a carving knife?

glammama · 06/11/2007 19:46

I think I'm just shit at cutting malt loaf and I'm going to try and find it ready sliced.

OP posts:
tigana · 06/11/2007 19:46

Nope, whenever I have cut malt loaf it has turned into sticky wedges too!

glammama · 06/11/2007 19:46

I don't have a carving knife. Should I go and buy one?

OP posts:
Tinker · 06/11/2007 19:47

In fact, think, why did they produce a ready sliced option? Hey? You are not alone.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 06/11/2007 19:47

You are 5 months pregnant, FGS woman just rip it off in lumps....

glammama · 06/11/2007 19:49

You know, this malt loaf stressed me out too much. I have moved onto these yum!

Gently, slowly slight pressure serrated sharp knife.

I hate malt loaf though, but dh thinks it's food of the gods

glammama · 06/11/2007 19:57

Tiny, I can't be too slow when cutting malt loaf because I want it in my mouth RIGHT NOW. Maybe that's where I was going wrong?

OP posts:
EmsMum · 06/11/2007 19:57

Its meant to go into a sticky compacted wedge.

Doesn't a sharp serrated knife used with rapid sawing action work though?

glammama · 06/11/2007 19:59

Ah, but I ask you Emsmum, if it was meant to go into the wedge then why do they sell those snack packs (total rip off) where the slices are perfect? aha!!!!

OP posts:
EmsMum · 06/11/2007 22:13

glammamama... I've never tried those. They are presumably meant for picnics and the assumption is they will be sat on at some point before eating to achieve the required degree of compaction.
