What are your favourites? I keep looking at his site but am never sure what to try so some tried and tested would be a good place to start

I make so often I have memorised the recipes for:

Jools Saturday afternoon pasta
Empire roast chicken
Coronation chicken salad
Melt in mouth shin stew (this is the best beef stew recipe I have, bar none - I think it's the porcini)
My old man's superb chicken
Fantastic fish pie from one of the early books - return of the naked chef I think

reprehensibleme · 10/03/2021 16:09

One in Jamie's Italy for sausages with lentils. DBIL made a roast pork with peaches which was so delicious we still talk about it years later.

Spaghetti vongole
Saffron rice (lovely with salad and tuna)
Sweet n sour chicken

AnExcellentWalker · 10/03/2021 16:13

A lot of JO's recipes do assume you can already cook to a certain standard. Some of them simply don't work as they are, an experienced cook would spot the obvious errors /steps missed out & deal with it as they go along. But no good for absolute beginners or people who've never done a certain dish /style of food before.

mrsnec · 10/03/2021 16:40

I still use Jamie's dinners for really basic recipes I forget quantities of. So crumble, fish pie , fish & chips etc.

Jamie's America is one of my favourite cook books of all time and I use it a lot. The deep pan pizza in there is the go to in this house but I also love the ranch eggs, gumbo, cinnamon buns, peach cobbler and fried chicken.

I've got 5 ingredients and I've only done baking with the kids from there. They love the chocolate orange sh shortbread.

I was full of enthusiasm for the veg book but the recipe I tried was a massive pain in the bum and put me off trying anything else. His latest recipes all look like he's run out of ideas and they're always burnt.

I prefer his older books and go to other writers for more elaborate things these days.

This one is brilliant and I've made it loads.

I like the jerk chicken, I think it was from the 30 minute meals book. Yummy.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/03/2021 17:40

The cauliflower cheese pasta is great, but you only need half the amount of milk at the most!

StepOutOfLine · 10/03/2021 17:53

I'm not a huge Jamie fan, for various reasons, but his curry recipe in (iirc) Dinners is my go-to curry recipe.

Joolsin · 10/03/2021 17:56

I make this a lot - it's quick, easy and tasty

Also his mulled wine is delicious (although not sure that's necessarily what you're looking for!!)

I've only got a few of his books and often find them overly faffy, expensive or time-consuming compared with my trusty BBC Goodfood recipes. That said, the Pregnant Jools pasta and peri-peri chicken from 30 min meals are good, and the chicken and chorizo paella from Save With Jamie is a good standby. And the fish curry is quite good, if you ignore the way he cooks rice and just do it in a rice cooker Smile

All of that sounds really good!

The harissa spiced aubergine dish from his superfoods book is delicious

HoldontoOneMoreDay · 10/03/2021 18:18

Pregnant Jools pasta is cooking on my stove this very minute.

I actually use his 5 ingredients book a lot (though I tend to add more ingredients in...) from there I do his chicken pot pie (though I use stock and creme fraiche for the sauce, not water) and I also do his slow lamb shoulder with chickpeas (though I use tinned chickpeas for that so I do the lamb for a couple of hours with water, then add the tinned chickpeas, tomatoes and preserved lemons for the last three hours of cooking). That is so lush, we had it on Sunday actually.

wandawombat · 10/03/2021 18:31

I make his waffles.

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/03/2021 18:34

His Yorkshire Pudding recipe is fantastic.

MiaMc · 10/03/2021 18:44

Chicken laksa!

I just do it with leftover chicken or make a veggie version. I don’t bother with the Chinese 5 spice chicken thigh bashing.

Greens mac n cheese
His easy curry pastes
Sausage, apple and parsnip pan bake
Naan with bacon, poached egg, yoghurt and mango chutney (hardly a recipe and a twist on the Dishoom breakfast naan)

Exactly. I have also found some recipes (particularly the period of his 15/30 minute meals) lacked flavour over style.
Nohomemadecandles · 10/03/2021 20:35

Messy meatballs are good
Garlic doughballs

Yes, you do need an element of cook's instinct I think to be able to do some if it.

Some isn't very good either but that's probably true of most

Wish he would use plates though.

mrurddhasabitpart · 10/03/2021 20:52

I second the wish that he'd use plates.

The 39min meal chicken pie and peas is a favourite here.

Todayisanewday75 · 11/03/2021 06:49

Some great ideas thanks. I do cook quite a lot so can tell when reading a recipe if it’s not going to work

Another Pregnant Jools pasta fan here. His vegan shepherd's pie is brilliant. It is a bit of a faff, but so worth it. I like a lot of his recipes.

I made the roast chicken Margherita with potato and smoked mozzarella gnocchi the other day, and that was delicious.
