So... I never knew to put sugar in bolognese! Tonight I've done it and everyone wolfed it down. My question is how much do you put in? I probs put to much in that's why everyone ate it 😂

Sugar? I've never heard of putting sugar in bolognese!

EssentialHummus · 26/02/2021 19:03

I’ve never put sugar in but I strongly recommend a dash of soy sauce.

bigbluebus · 26/02/2021 19:03

I usually put 1/2 teaspoon in.

SooMoony · 26/02/2021 19:03

I've heard of putting sugar in chilli but never in bolognaise.

IPeedInThePool · 26/02/2021 19:04

I put about a teaspoon in and taste if it's not quite right a tiny sprinkle more. Also chorizo is a good thing to add in a spag bol.

NutellaEllaElla · 26/02/2021 19:04

No need for sugar in Bolognese.

Mushroom ketchup and Worcestershire sauce on the other hand are divine.

FelicityBeedle · 26/02/2021 19:04

I put at least a tea spoon, I use cheap gin tomatoes so it takes out the acidity and makes it taste like it’s cooked for hours. I ten cook it cor hours anyway

Hopeishere52 · 26/02/2021 19:04

I use a tablespoon of red wine vinegar and a teaspoon of sugar

VintageStitchers · 26/02/2021 19:04

I usually add a bit of chocolate powder to tomato dishes like bolognaise and chilli.

IPeedInThePool · 26/02/2021 19:05

Anything tomato based I always add sugar makes the taste so much better.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 26/02/2021 19:05

Milk in Bolognese is my secret ingredient :)

Hangingover · 26/02/2021 19:05

Teaspoon. Also I put in miso at the end.

Chewbecca · 26/02/2021 19:06

Some tinned toms can be quite tart so sugar helps if that is the case in any recipe with tinned toms.

I wouldn’t put it in as a matter of course though.

howdidigettobe50something · 26/02/2021 19:07

Definitely a teaspoon in any tomato based sauce.

Not sugar. Finally chopped or grated carrot. That extra sweetness is needed in any deep meat sauce. I also add a bit of hot smoked paprika for depth.
Geneticsbunny · 26/02/2021 19:08

Try half a teaspoon of redcurrant jelly instead

Vetyveriohohoh · 26/02/2021 19:08

A squirt of ketchup or a scant teaspoon of sugar, just takes the edge off tinned tomatoes/passata

ellabluebella · 26/02/2021 19:10

At least a teaspoon, depending on the amount of bolognese.
Also a dash of balsamic vinegar.

brogo · 26/02/2021 19:10

I put marmite in mine, delicious!

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 26/02/2021 19:10

I add balsamic vinegar to get the sweetness in.

supercee · 26/02/2021 19:11

If you're making it in a hurry, touch of sugar. If slow cooking there's no need. I put balsamic vinegar in mine and my friend recommended the mushroom ketchup like a PP, but haven't tried that yet. Chocolate for chilli only.

BunnyRuddington · 26/02/2021 19:11

I've never put sugar in either. I find ready made sauces like domio far too sweet but that's probably because I'm used to cooking it myself without the sugar.

windisblowing · 26/02/2021 19:12

I go for a squirt of ketchup to all tomato based

Pippylongstockings91 · 26/02/2021 19:12

Wow! All these suggestions. I've never thought of half of these. Think my lot will be fed up of Bolognese when I've tried all these ideas 😂 x

No sugar. I add a rich beef stock cube to mine.
