Do you have a slow cooker?

crokky · 26/10/2007 19:33

I'm not great for food suggestions, but you can get a packet of cheap paper plates and plastic cutlery/cups to eat the food off so you don't have to wash up in the bathroom.

LittleMissNorty · 26/10/2007 19:33

No - DH won't let me do casseroles...something to do with dreadful childhood memories

jacket pots done in micro with chees and beans?
Stuffed peppers done in micro are brill
(with rice, pesto and goats cheese)
Serve with a salad
will try to think of more

Neverenoughpumpkins · 26/10/2007 19:35

Get a camping stove or, buy an electric hob you can set up somewhere else-then you can have loads of pasta and rice and stirfries

tortoiseSHELL · 26/10/2007 19:36

2 weeks isn't too bad - see if you can go to a friends or out for a couple of nights, microwave will do lots of things - scrambled egg on toast, lots of things only need a microwave to cook.

We didn't have a kitchen for 2 YEARS (that's how long it took dh to fit it - he dismantled the old one on 18th Feb 2002, then new one was finished at 3am Christmas morning 2004!!! In an effort to get it finished we invited friends for Christmas lunch, so we HAD to get it done!!!

wheelybug · 26/10/2007 19:37

We have just got our kitchen back after a seven week refit.... we hadn't got round to cooking and freezing so had to survive on microwave meals and takeaways. It was quite depressing, expensive and mostly unhealthy. I found rather late in the day a great range in M&S which was pretty good - fresh ingrdients and everything

stressteddy · 26/10/2007 19:37

tortoise it right - there are loadss of things to cook in micro - just can't think aof any more at the mo!

tortoiseSHELL · 26/10/2007 19:37

Also, could you 'borrow' a friend's kitchen, make some things like shepherds pie/lasagne that you can then heat up in the microwave?

LittleMissNorty · 26/10/2007 19:38

OMG TWO years...I'd be going demented.....I have to say I insisted on someone else fitting it, doing the floor, tiling and everything...

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming!

I think you could manage if you freeze ahead.

You can cook potatoes, rice, pasta etc in a microwave, and veggies, so you just need to cook and freeze the things to go with them.

If you cook 2 batches of everythign you need only make 7 different things.

Casserole / stew (make 3 different types?)
Shepherds pie base
Tomato / veg sauce for pasta
Fish pie base

The most difficult thing with cooking like this is the timing, because you can only cook one thing at a time. I managed without a hob for about 2 months and you get used to it - you can cook the potatoes first e.g. and then leave them standing while you heat up the otehr part of the meal.

saadia · 26/10/2007 19:40

You could invest in a George Foreman grill, can do fish, chicken and veggies on that.

LittleMissNorty · 26/10/2007 19:40

I've got my kitchen for the next week or so, so can cook and freeze...lasange a good one - always freezes well....and will def check out M&S....mmmm lovely!

Yes, 2 weeks of rather unhealthy eating I fear...and expensive!

Some fresh pasta claims to be microwavable in the pack (Tesco own brand does). Never tried it, but might be OK? Soup would be good. And I'm sure you can get microwave in the bag rice, so would make curries and chilli for the freezer.

FrayedKnot · 26/10/2007 19:42

Sorry just seen post about casseroles!

I would definitely cook ahead as much as poss though because it's not just the cooker you won;t have, it's the preparation area etc, I presume?

Mamamoor · 26/10/2007 19:50

Pot Noodles!!! - only joking. Lots of salads/baked spuds. Don't have a microwave myself so haven't a clue what to do with it! Do you have family/close frinds nearby you who can feed you at least one hot meal a day?

prufrock · 26/10/2007 19:55

Get an electric steamer. You can do rice, potatoes, veggies, fish, chicken. In fact almost anything. And it's very healthy.

moopymoo · 26/10/2007 20:01

i did this last year. was a pain but ok. i got a george foreman grill (borrowed) and a single plug in hot plate. we managed ok, did more one pot meals than normal. Microwave rice was useful, not something i would usually touch but ok. loads of salads and grilled chicken etc. i set up a galley area at the back of the sitting room. was all a pain but worth it in the end. the washing up in the bathroom was a nightmare though. i would put all exta plates cups glasses etc in storage for a while just keep one each out. hth

NotAlert · 26/10/2007 20:02

You'll have a kettle too I guess? Cous cous. You just pour boiling water (better still with a bit of vegetable bouillion powder) on it and leave it to stand for a few minutes - which is whilst you (or DH!) sorts the broccoli/peas/sweetcorn/whatever in the microwave, cuts the feta into cubes - mix it all in, sprinkle with herbs, serve with salad. Really nice, actually.

ScaryScienceT · 26/10/2007 20:11

Microwave, ready meals, takeaways, and eating out. Add it onto the cost of your kitchen.

lillypie · 26/10/2007 20:17

I haven't had a kitchen for more than 10 months
and have managed with a combination microwave,a one ring halogen hob and a sandwich toaster.

You become very creative.

LittleMissNorty · 26/10/2007 20:35

Some great ideas there....thanks

OMG 10 months.....don't know how you manage....I'm dreading 2 weeks!
