I'm making my own cheeseboard for the first time this year and would love to get some tips and recommendations on what to buy, use and try! Different types of cheeses that are a MUST for you would be appreciated too Grin

@MirandaMarple can you share your spiced plum chutney recipe please please please???

CherryPavlova · 04/12/2020 20:17

Isle of Wight Blue and soft.
A Beaufort d’Ete and maybe a Yarg or Wyfe of Bath.

Homemade quince jam, green tomato chutney and Clementine mostarda.

Stilton and more Stilton for me. For the rest of us a wheel of Boursin and a smoked cheddar. Simples!
Crackers wise I like a variety everyone else Jacob's

SOboredofcleaning · 04/12/2020 20:20

A blue, a goat, a good strong cheddar, a creamy cheese, manchego, and something quite nutty like a gruyere.
Grapes, figs, apples, chutney, chilli jam...

DrMaryMalone · 04/12/2020 20:23

Various crackers including oatcakes and digestives
A nice strong cheddar
Wensleydale with cranberries
A massive Brie
Applewood smoked
A herby garlicky roule
Scottish Crowdie (delicious!)
Grapes, sliced apple, a couple of chutneys and unsalted butter to serve with

CoconutGrove · 04/12/2020 20:25

I like Reblochon. Quite mild

@IHaveBrilloHair ooo I love a Jarlsburg too with cornichons 👍😁

Trekkerbabe · 04/12/2020 20:33

Pie d'Anglois

AMAZING! All the supermarkets sell it.

JumpingJamboree · 04/12/2020 20:47

Gosh I LOVE cheese, so much so I had a cheese wedding cake!
I like a good strong cheddar, Black Bomber is my favourite, Cornish Yarg, onion and balsamic cheddar, Brie, Camembert off the top of my head. Usually pick up a few unusual ones to try as well. I steer clear of anything stinky though as no one in the house will eat it, including me.
I serve them with a few different cracker options, butter, grapes, celery and a selection of chutneys. I like a red onion chutney and a tomato based chutney best.

If you are pregnant OP, the NHS website tells you what cheese you can and can't eat. Below is a quick copy and paste version:

What you can eat
• all hard cheeses such as Cheddar, Stilton and parmesan
• soft pasteurised cheeses such as cottage cheese, mozzarella, feta, cream cheese, paneer, ricotta, halloumi, goats' cheese without a white coating on the outside (rind) and processed cheese spreads
• thoroughly cooked soft unpasteurised cheeses, until steaming hot
• thoroughly cooked soft cheeses with a white coating on the outside, until steaming hot
• thoroughly cooked soft blue cheeses, until steaming hot
• pasteurised milk, yoghurt, cream and ice cream

What to avoid
• mould-ripened soft cheeses with a white coating on the outside, such as brie, Camembert and chevre (unless cooked until steaming hot)
• soft blue cheeses such as Danish blue, Gorgonzola and Roquefort (unless cooked until steaming hot)
• any unpasteurised cow's milk, goats' milk or sheep's milk
• any foods made from unpasteurised milk, such as soft goats' cheese

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/12/2020 21:03

Trekkerbabe
I love that too.
Actually, I love all of them.
Cheese is my favourite food.

ducklingg · 05/12/2020 16:15

Yum!! I can't wait to do my cheeseboard bow. Thanks all so much for your recommendations and although I can't reply to them all, I've read every single one of them Xmas Smile

I think we should start a new tradition op - the great ceremonial cheeseboard bow!
It’s certainly worthy of one ! I may just do a small head nod this year if you don’t mind, given everything ? Grin

SinkGirl · 05/12/2020 17:39

Comtè

And if you are a meat eater, saucisson secs is essential.

waltzingparrot · 05/12/2020 17:48

I'd be happy with my own board with just
Cambazola Blue and
Cheddar (the Wookey Hole one)
Jar of pickled Walnuts
Branston pickle.

HeronLanyon · 05/12/2020 18:00

Oh cambozola - haven’t had that fir ages. It’s so good ! Thanks for reminder.

Carriemac · 05/12/2020 18:10

The only gem I know about a cheeseboard is the order you eat them in - the three ages of man
Hard
Soft
Smelly

NaturalBigDarkBrows · 05/12/2020 18:11

Goats cheese, Tesco the best cocktail pickled onions & sweet & savoury crackers 🤤

MarshaBradyo · 05/12/2020 18:14

Yes to Cambozola
Manchego

Lots of others not so fussed

Good crackers and chutneys

Walnuts and a walnut cracker (reminds me of childhood)

MarshaBradyo · 05/12/2020 18:14

I go a bit crazy at cheese deli at Christmas can’t wait

Patbutcherismyhero · 05/12/2020 18:16

Always a good mature cheddar. Something soft like a brie. A Wensleydale with cranberry (because it's Christmas and that's the law). A blue even though dp is the only one who likes that. And then something novelty. In the past we've had charcoal cheese, chilli cheese, chocolate cheese etc.

With nice crackers, grapes, pickled onions and a few chutneys. Perfect.

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/12/2020 19:17

Sage derby is usually available in Tesco at this time of year, gorgeous flavour and colour, and some loads melted through butternut squash risotto is amazing.

baubling · 05/12/2020 19:23

I want some cheese now... right this minute.

MarshaBradyo · 05/12/2020 19:24

I’m making up for Christmas this year with the nicest most festive food. Cheese is up there.

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/12/2020 19:38

Same.
