Tell me your best swede recipes

I recently bought a box of mixed veg and there's a swede inside. I've never had swede before so no idea what it tastes like and I'm here asking for your best swede recipes please.
Or should I just do myself a favour and bin the thing...

Oh no don't bin it. It's lovely peeled, cubed, boiled and mashed with loads of butter and black pepper. We like to add cooked carrots to be mashed with it too. So nice with a casserole or a roast. Takes a while to cook, longer than potatoes.

Mash it with carrot and softened onion. Lots of butter and black pepper.
Then either use it as a side dish, or top some kind of pie with it.

Swedes are gits to prepare. Get some one else to peel and chop it if you can! We like it boiled with carrots and mash it with plenty of black pepper and butter. Also freezes really well.

This is pretty lush. Don't be foxed by the smoked olive oil. I just used ordinary. I can get smoked sea salt in Lidl - comes in a wee grinder thing - and I added that. But really the smoked paprika does the bulk of the job.

Make a cottage pie and substitute or mix the swede with potato for the topping.

Mash with carrot

Use in a stew

Would echo others. Swede is brilliant. I mashed loads last night with half a butternut squash that was lurking at the bottom of the fridge. Butter, salt, black pepper.

There was stuff left over and I threw it into a vegetable soup I made today. It's very versatile and tastes great.

I cut it into cubes, about 15-20 cm, parboil until al dente, drain & fry in butter & oil with s+p plus a little nutmeg until brown in places. A little brown sugar can help it caramelise.

For prep instead of peeling it & cubing it & boiling it, microwave 7 minutes (and maybe a bit more ) each side. Give it a punch when you turn it over.
Then you can basically scrape it out of the skin.

Grate it and add cumin a spoon of flour and a egg.
Then add spoonful to hot frying pan and cook on both sides till crispy.
Serve with poached eggs.

It's my favourite veg! Use a knife to cut of the outside (veg peeler won't work as skin is v thick) cube (maybe 2-3cm squared) boil for 50 mins, mash with butter and pepper and salt and serve! Super easy! Delicious with roast!

You can chop a carrot and cook it together - makes for 'prettier' mash!

Peel and chop into "chips" toss in oil and oven bake for lower carb chips that taste awesome.

Try Delia's swede with crispy bacon, I don't like swede at all apart from cooked this way.

What I do is boil gammon and then cook the swede in the salty water left from the gammon. It ends up with the flavour of the gammon. Mash potatoes, gammon and swede. Delicious.
Swede is just too much of a hassle to chop though so I use it once a year maybe when I've forgotten just how hard it is to chop. And yes, it takes a long time to cook - maybe boiling/simmering for 35 minutes to 40 minutes.

I boiled and mashed one up on the weekend. Had some today with haggis (which I freeze - slice the haggis up into strips before freezing) while I microwave it, I make up a bit of gravy and put a small frozen yorkshire in the toaster. Yummy and quick.

I think it is the only vegetable I dislike but, once in a blue moon I cook some for DH ( mashed with butter and black pepper) then freeze the leftovers so I don't have to cook it again for ages. It's awful stuff.

Yes agree. And once mashed, fry it up and served with poached/fried egg.

My mum used to go 50/50 potato/swede on cottage pie, that was lovely.
