great thread
so nice to know that I am not the only one
I now have to go and buy one tomorrow now to try it toasted hunker !!

nothing wrong with eating a whole one they are not big enough to share

expatinscotland · 12/10/2007 00:06

yes, there is something wrong with this because malt loaf is minging.

i make it from a recipe i think ladysherlock posted on here a couple of years ago for DH and the girls, who love malt loaf.

but there's no accounting for tastes, these three also love to ruin their chips with brown sauce as well.

DS1 made a malt loaf in my bread maker on Sunday - I got malt extract from the chemist and the loaf was YUMMY, but about six times the size of a Soreen one! Better not do that too often!

susiecutie · 12/10/2007 01:34

you MUST post the recipe here for it! sounds great!!! I have a bread maker... i have not succumbed to the malt loaf yet... but think that may have just done it!

I am feeding dd again... so i think i have earnt it haven't I???

arfishy · 12/10/2007 03:16

Yes Yes Yes Please for malt loaf bread machine recipe. I can't buy malt loaf here.

In answer to the OP. You have to eat it. With lots of butter. Aren't they low fat or something and have fruit in? Practically a salad then.

On the subject of toasted malt loaf - toasted banana bread with butter is gorgeous.

OverRated · 12/10/2007 03:28

I miss malt loaf

Furball · 12/10/2007 07:14

I've toyed with the idea of bread and butter pudding with malt loaf. Bet it's scrummy. .

fortyplus · 12/10/2007 09:02

arfishy - it's not the same, but it is yummy...

...you need a breadmaker with a 'raisin bake' programme to add the raisins part way through.

1 tsp yeast
500g Strong white flour
1.5 tsp sugar
3 tbsp malt extract (I got it from the chemist)
320ml water
150g raisins

Makes a large loaf - use the 'bake raisin' programme - 4 hours.

Enjoy!

Soreen is full of hydrogenated fat, isn't it? So, yes, there's quite a lot wrong with it

this is lovely, and no refined sugar or hydrogenated nasties

fortyplus · 12/10/2007 09:06

I drink plenty of red wine to neutralise the free radicals in the malt loaf

On the topic of yummy, fruity, bready items, this is rather lovely

pecan raisin bread. You can get it in Tezzers and Sainsburys. It costs about a million pounds but is rather lovely, toasted with butter and peanut butter (so I hear).

Not as moreish as malt loaf but mmmmmm anyway.

hunkermunker · 12/10/2007 10:56

Franny, it used to be, but I think they've changed it. I will check though, but I think I studied the pack quite hard last time I bought it.

FrannyandZooey · 12/10/2007 10:58

oh that's groovy

the organic one is still worthier, of course

arfishy · 12/10/2007 11:33

Oooh thank you forty. I will definitely be making this one tomorrow.

How exciting fullmoon, yes, indeed I am in Oz. Another for our gang . Now we can have 5-way convos overnight .

Which city are you coming to and have you stocked up on M&S undies?

ivykaty44 · 12/10/2007 15:41

Only if you don't have it spread so thick with butter you can't see the loaf through it but I see you have met that requirement so no absolutely nothing wrong with it.

purpleduck · 12/10/2007 18:41

mmmm >

doreenloveshersoreen · 12/10/2007 18:56

ivykaty44 · 12/10/2007 18:58
