A good alternative to cod?

Can anyone recommend a white fish I can use in place of cod? I've tried hoki and tonight we had pollock in breadcrumbs but I wasn't hugely impressed with either.
I'm trying to avoid cod because it's expensive and because of overfishing etc.
What else I can make fish and chips with?

err - haddock? or is that just as bad as cod. Actually I think cod replacement is good, because we wouldn't wwant to be eating a fellow MNer, would we?

you can breadcrumb and deepfry goujons of plaice, sole etc. not quite fish and chips, but still good, and more sustainable.

There's no alternative to Cod. No-one else could type like that fish.

pollock and hake need to be really really fresh or go all woolly. is better to get whatever is freshest and cook accordingly.

Monkfish? It's a similar texture, but not as strong a taste.

I've used coley in fish pie very successfully. Never do fish and chips as such, so don't know about that.

Marinade firm tofu in garlic, soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce, and mild smoked paprika. (Or just use flavoured/prepared tofu) coat in flour and then soymilk and then bread crumbs or make a tempura batter.
Deep fry largeish chunks and serve with chips. Yum. Much cheaper and eco-friendly
