I love trying out new recipes, and thought it would be fun to have a thread where we try stuff out and report back. Source must be cited and link provided if online. Photos encouraged.

Tonight I'll be making asian aubergine wedges, from Nadiya Hussain's Time to Eat book.
I like the taste of aubergine but have grave doubts about the texture. Still, I'm being brave and giving this a go.
Worth noting that I leave the chilli out of everything so that the dd's can eat it (I add at the table).

Anyone fancy joining me? (Waits for tumbleweed...)

That pasta looks nice, I might try that.
I made burger buns today, using the white baps recipe from the time to eat book, started in the bread maker. Not tried them yet but they certainly look good.

Tonight we had smoked fish with pasta and horseradish, which is a recipe i love because it is so quick, simple and tasty! Used salmon rather than trout.

Those rolls look great @GlumyGloomer i find it hard to get decent rolls in the shops!

GlumyGloomer · 03/07/2021 19:03

I'm now wondering if I can get my kids to eat that. They can be tricky about pasta not in a tomato based sauce, but they do love smoked salmon. Maybe it would work out.
Today I attempted the whole Nadiya Family Favourites sunday lunch (yes I know it's saturday).
It was quite a lot more work than I usually put in, and the results were mixed. I bottled it on spatchcocking the chicken, the coriander stuffing balls were great, the roast potatoes were ok but nothing very special, ditto the tumeric beans, and the tomato gravey was just plain weird. Dh made himself bisto gravey in protest. It was interesting to try though.

Your baps look good Glumy and I like the sound of both those pasta dishes.

I made the Pinch of Nom Caribbean Jerk Stee in the slow cooker today pinchofnom.com/recipes/caribbean-jerk-stew/. Added a large teaspoon of chilli flakes. Was really tasty.

Ginger and lime ice cream - Waitrose recipe - quick simple lovely. Recipe on-line

Imicola · 03/07/2021 19:57

@GlumyGloomer interesting! I quite like something different from gravy. I used to have a recipe for roast pork with a sweet and sour tomato based sauce instead of gravy which i really liked. I think it was basically blend a tin of tomatoes and add vinegar and sugar!

I made the fat free tea loaf that @ClaraTheImpossibleGirl posted, and when making it i realised i have previously made something very similar although i think from a different recipe. Looks and smells great, but haven't yet tried it.

Today i made slow cooker spare ribs. It's the first time I've ever cooked ribs, the recipe is really easy and it came out pretty well. Left it in the cooker most of the day, then served with noodles and peas and sweetcorn. Would make again, but wish probably try to make it more healthy somehow! Perhaps adding some veg or replacing the ketchup with tinned tomatoes.

I’ve never cooked ribs before either - interesting.

Followed this recipe www.supergoldenbakes.com/one-pan-cod-with-chorizo-and-chickpeas/ - a lovely traybake. Just added crusty bread and rocket.

Imicola · 05/07/2021 19:53

Oh, that looks really good @Wildernesstips I'd love to try that one!

Summer pudding, although the weather is anything but.
Mine does not look like the picture, but it tasted good. Ignore the mess in the background...

@GlumyGloomer wow, i love summer pudding so much, i am now jealous!

Today has been an exercise in not quite right baking. I set out to make a malt loaf in the bread maker. The recipe specifies plain flour, which it turns out I'd pretty much ran out of, but I didn't realise until I was already committed. So I used barley flour instead. It didn't rise much, and I ended up with a very lopsided loaf. Luckily it does still taste nice. Then I had lots of bananas to use up, so I made an Annabelle Karmel banana bread (meals in minutes book), but forgot to check it when the oven beebed, so ended up with an under done cake which collapsed, then went back in the oven. Tastes very nice, but again looks absolute rubbish. I would not get very far on bake off, lol

@GlumyGloomer oh dear, what a shame, but it's the taste that matters most! I made a strawberry and cinnamon torte today, which came out well, but i personally think the combination of strawberry and cinnamon is a bit odd... everyone wolfed it down, texture was good, but im not convinced on the cinnamon. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/strawberry-cinnamon-torte#commentsFeed

GlumyGloomer · 11/07/2021 18:26

@Imicola strawberry and cinnamon does sound a bit odd, like mixing summer and autumn. Probably about right for this summer though Hmm
What would you use instead of cinnamon? I've never really seen strawberries used in baking full stop so have no idea what spices might work.

OP posts:
Imicola · 11/07/2021 19:44

@GlumyGloomer not really sure, perhaps cardamom would be good. I wouldn't usually make a strawberry cake, but we had a large punnet of amazing looking berries with zero flavour!

GlumyGloomer · 11/07/2021 20:07

@Imicola ah, so disappointing when that happens. Although my kids are not remotely discerning when it comes to strawberries. If I have too many my go to recipe is another AK meals in minutes one, strawberry and elderflower ice lollies.

I made the crust less quiche from up thread (p33 I think) and it worked very well. I did cook the bacon first though.

Hi, how is everyone?
After too much wingeing from the family I've totally lost my inspiration. Dh would basically live off roast chicken and chopped tomato based pasta dishes if left to his own devices, and dd1 will only request birdseye chicken bloody chargrills Hmm
Hope everyone else is getting a bit more appreciation for their efforts.

I did make a cute birthday cup cake for dd2 that went down well. So that's one victory at least.

Not done much cooking but did make this Joe Wickes favourite yesterday (can only find a DM link) www.dailymail.co.uk/home/you/article-4515560/Chicken-mozzarella-salad-warm-tomato-dressing.html

Cute cupcake Glumy.

GlumyGloomer · 09/08/2021 07:42

Made this yesterday:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/slow-cooker-chicken-korma
Ended up just doing it on the hob as I didn't have time to cook in the morning, but it still turned out delicious. Instead of blending onions, ginger and garlic I used frozen chopped shallots and ginger and garlic puree, which worked fine and was a bit less faff.
Dh thought it was a bit too salty though.

OP posts:
Wildernesstips · 09/08/2021 18:45

Do you think it would have been less salty if slow cooked?

I made this recipe thefamilyedit.ie/blog/sweet-almond-and-lime-curry/ that was suggested on another thread. Added some turkey and subbed the courgette with squash and served with rice. Delicious.

Wildernesstips · 12/08/2021 18:58

Cooked a lovely Rick Stein recipe (Cod with beer, bacon and cabbage) that was in this month’s Delicious magazine. Sounds weird but was very tasty and light. Can’t link to the Delicious recipe, but this is the same www.bigoven.com/recipe/grilled-salted-cod-with-beer-bacon-and-cabbage/140869

Fferny1 · 15/08/2021 15:55

Just cooked ottolenghis pasta with Miso, tomato & chilli and its great, with a rich savoury taste. I especially like the crispy oregano & garlic topping. I might leave the olives kit next time though as the kids don't like them.

Wildernesstips · 15/08/2021 21:35

Sounds good Fferny1. I made this soup this weekend as ai have a glut of patty pan squash to use up naturallyella.com/summer-squash-soup/ it was surprisingly delicious.
