I love trying out new recipes, and thought it would be fun to have a thread where we try stuff out and report back. Source must be cited and link provided if online. Photos encouraged.

Tonight I'll be making asian aubergine wedges, from Nadiya Hussain's Time to Eat book.
I like the taste of aubergine but have grave doubts about the texture. Still, I'm being brave and giving this a go.
Worth noting that I leave the chilli out of everything so that the dd's can eat it (I add at the table).

Anyone fancy joining me? (Waits for tumbleweed...)

The rice bowl was good. Thought it would have benefited from sushi seasoning, but I realised I had 3 bottles of mirin but no rice vinegar! We used home made sweet chilli and grape jam with it. Toddler seemed happy enough but I think mainly ate the egg and Turkey!

GlumyGloomer · 28/04/2021 19:35

Georgy any particular brand of hollandaise? I tried a jar from Lydle once but it was very acidic and too runny.
Washing machine now! Hope that's the last of them. Last year we had the dishwasher and fridge freezer go in quick succession, which was stressful enough.
Imicola did you use turkey steaks? I'll put that one on the menu Smile

Yes, @GlumyGloomer just quick cook Turkey steaks. Had left overs tonight but forgot the egg... definitely better with it! I added extra chilli jam to the toddler's tonight and she polished it all off which was a nice surprise!

Georgyporky · 29/04/2021 19:23

GG Hollandaise is Sainsbo own brand, we like it but I'm always a bit wary of recommending things.

Having said that, your Chicken Tinga is great ! Another 2 portions are in the freezer.

Imicola · 29/04/2021 19:46

Tonight I made this although I didn't have any herbs for the gremolata. It's really tasty!

we had it with braised baby leeks which were also very nice, much sweeter than usual leek cooking! www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/braised-baby-leeks

GlumyGloomer · 29/04/2021 20:46

Georgy I'll check it out next time I'm in sainsbury's.
Tonight I made the Brazilian fish stew Wilderness posted. Went down well apart from dd1 who was not remotely impressed. Can't win them all.

I made Mexican scrambled eggs from Nigella Express for lunch. I hadn't read the recipe properly before, and assumed the eggs went in the tortilla wraps at the end, but no. The wraps are snipped into strips, fried, then coated in egg. It's indulgent heaven (fried bread of any kind is a guilty pleasure of mine). Naturally the family hated it Hmm

Love it Glumyand I totally hear you - it is rare for all 4 of us to agree on liking a recipe.

Georgyporky · 01/05/2021 17:47

DH is cooking tonight, we're having 32, 67, & 73.
I wish they were page numbers from a recipe book !

GlumyGloomer · 01/05/2021 19:05

My Dh normally cooks pasta once a week, but he's job hunting at the moment and too important busy to do it. I ended up making my own bolognese tonight. He approved the use of mushrooms, but was otherwise unimpressed Hmm
Made cake pops with dd1, which came out great.

Georgyporky · 01/05/2021 19:24

GG - what an ingrate! My bolognese is far superior to DH's, but I never say so.

I'm always grateful to anyone that cooks anything for me - including semi-cooked bacon in a burnt toast sarnie on Mother's Day.

BTW, I hope your DH is job-hunting because he wants to & not because he has to.

MrsMouse03 · 01/05/2021 19:29

Bog standard roast beef dinner tonight - no recipe needed !

Georgyporky · 02/05/2021 19:17

It's one meal that needs minimal preparation & little attention during cooking.

Fferny1 · 03/05/2021 13:11

I made Meera Sodha's Chick Pea Workers curry & Blackened sweetcorn Chaat. Both tasted great, but I also added fresh curry leaves & paneer to the Chick Peas and my teenagers devoured it. The sweetcorn recipe is so simple & delicious.

GlumyGloomer · 03/05/2021 14:27

Hi @MrsMouse03 and @Fferny1, those both sound good. Fferny was that from a book or are the recipes online? I love sweetcorn, always like to find something new to do with it.

@glumygloomer they are all available if you Google them. Though I have downloaded her books on Kindle too.
I've just made saucy bean curd with pine nuts from her East book. Though I heated up and sliced the bean curd, so it absorbed the sauce better.

Wildernesstips · 03/05/2021 18:21

Made a version of this Moroccan Roast Chicken www.sainsburysmagazine.co.uk/recipes/mains/moroccan-roast-chicken-with-root-vegetable-couscous. I have made it properly twice and it is delicious. This time, I just did the roast veg and couscous because I wanted something with leftover roast chicken. I used ras al hanout instead of harissa this time which was OK but not as punchy as the harissa paste.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 03/05/2021 21:07

Zero cooking here today as I got a takeaway Wagamamas Blush haven't had it for years and I used to love eating there, back in my pre-DC days. I've never got the hang of making tofu properly, always nice when it's cooked and actually tasty!

Loads of overripe bananas need using up, I feel banana bread coming on for tomorrow...

GlumyGloomer · 04/05/2021 18:57

Continuing my series of meals I love which my family hate I made Nigella's cheddar cheese risotto tonight, with home made chicken stock instead of veg stock. I loved it.
Jealous of your Wagamama Clara, not had it for a couple of years now.

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 05/05/2021 21:48

I'll happily eat your family's share of the risotto @GlumyGloomer! Might make myself one tomorrow actually in preparation for having the Covid jab Friday, in case I'm not up to any cooking afterwards...

I do love a Wagamamas. It would have been nicer to eat it then and there so it was hot and fresh but DS2 was getting bored waiting and it was flipping freezing sitting outside!

GlumyGloomer · 08/05/2021 17:12

Georgy I can confirm that the Sainsburys hollandaise is much better than the lidle one. My homemade eggs Benedict was pretty good, although the eggs were slightly over done. I used poachies, which worked well aside from the eggs not sliding out at the end, I had to peel the pouch apart. It actually says that means they need a bit longer, but I gave them extra time (hence over done) and they still didn't slide free.

OP posts:
Georgyporky · 08/05/2021 18:35

GG I couldn't get on with those pod things, then I discovered how to poach eggs in clingfilm. YouTube shows it better than I can describe it, but I don't use oil and they still come out perfect.

Clara Hope you are not suffering, I had every symptom listed in the leaflet after my first jab, but nothing after the second.

I've borrowed "East" from the e-library. Some interesting recipes, but I won't be buying the real book. Might have done when I had to feed some members of my step-family, but no longer a problem.

Fferny1 · 09/05/2021 15:58

I made Socca - gram flour flatbreads as I'd run out of gf free bread. They can be used as Wraps or to scoop up dips,or as a pizza base.Or just as a snack with seasalt & pepper. They're surprisingly filling and simple

GlumyGloomer · 09/05/2021 18:47

Quiche today: www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/sticky-onion-cheddar-quiche
Probably my favourite quiche recipe, although I messed up and mixed all the cheese into the filling instead of saving half for the top. Still tasted good. I used ready rolled short crust and I always add a good splash of balsamic vinegar to the onions just before the end.
Georgy I have never heard of poaching an egg in cling film! How on earth does that work? to lazy to google
Ferny also never heard of Socca but it sounds good. Let no one say this thread isn't educational Grin
