Can anyone make giant cookies like the supermarket ones?

maltatheterrible · 09/10/2007 08:20

i am sadly addicted to Tescos triple choc giant cookies, and can quite happily eat a pack of 4 all by myself

i've tried to make similar soft textured biscuits but they always turn out too crispy, or just not cooked if i take them out sooner/lower the temp

has anyone got a recipe they could share please?

hang on I'll see if I can find it. It was for the chewy ones, I think the secret ingredient is Marvel

skirmish · 09/10/2007 08:22

yum...waiting patiently!!

whats marvel?

WideWebWitch · 09/10/2007 08:22

the one we used is like this in the UK can' think what the pudding mix is called

WideWebWitch · 09/10/2007 08:24

Maybe I'm getting that mixed up with Nigella's choc cake, I think that's what the Marvel in the cupboard is for (DH is the cake baker here, I only do fairy cakes), Marvel is instant dried skimmed milk powder, eww.

skirmish · 09/10/2007 08:25

well, no wonder i haven't heard of marvel then!!

sockmonkey · 09/10/2007 08:48

In the hopes of becoming the next Marslady, I will share my recipe. The cookies aren't giant, but big enough.
6oz Marg
6oz sugar
9oz SR Flour
3oz Cocoa powder
2 tbsp golden syrup
1 egg
1 packet of chocolate chips.

Cream marg & sugar, mix in the egg. Add flour & cocoa and golden syrup.

The mixture should be stiff enough to roll into a ball without sticking to your hands (so you may need to add more flour)

Split mix into golfball size balls (but flatten them a bit)
Bake for 15 mins at 150 degrees C

Let me know if you give them a try!

MamaG · 09/10/2007 08:50

This recipe makes fab choc chip cookies - DH reckons theyre as good as shop bought.
300g plain flour
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1 teaspoon fine salt
170g unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
215g light brown sugar
120g granulated white sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 large egg
1 large egg yolk
300g milk chocolate chips - this is a lot of choc chips, i normally use slightly less 250ish.
Preheat the oven to 190C/Gas Mark 5.

Sift together flour, bicaronate of soda and salt.

Stir together melted butter, brown sugar, sugar and vanilla. Add egg, then the yolk. Beat well to ensure that egg is evenly distributed. Stir in dry ingredients, then fold in chocolate chips until incorporated. Cover with clingfilm and chill dough until firm. At least 30 minutes.

Drop 1/4 cup sized golf ball shaped and slightly flattened mounds of dough onto a greased baking sheet.

Bake in preheated oven for approximately 10-12 minutes or only until the edges begin to turn golden. (They'll look and feel underdone but they're ready - every time ive made them im convinced ive got them out too early...i havent! .)

This is a simply gorgeous recipe from h2g2's website. I make them for playgroup when I'm feeling benevolent. I replace the chocolate with mixed spice and raisins so that nobody gets left out. They go down a storm.

Delicious American Cookies

This is a recipe for really authentic tasting, american style soft cookies.

The urban myth surrounding this recipe goes that a woman in New York met a friend at a small coffee shop, where they ordered drinks and cookies. They liked the cookies so much that she asked for the recipe. The owner of the place said that she could have the recipe, but she would have to pay something for it. The woman agreed, and paid for the coffee, cookies and the recipe on her credit card. When she got her next bill, she realised that she had been charged a massive $200 for the recipe. She was furious! She contacted the restaurant, which refused to refund the money saying that they'd fairly sold her the recipe. The woman said that, as far as she was concerned, at that price, she had bought the copyright for the recipe and vowed to distribute it as widely as possible. She passed the recipe on to everyone she knew, and asked them to do the same.

So here it is, pass it on!

American Chocolate Chip Cookies

100g/3 1/2 oz rolled oats
125g/4 1/2 oz plain flour
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
50g/2oz bar milk chocolate
100g/3 1/2 oz butter at room temperature
100g/3 1/2 oz soft dark brown sugar
100g/3 1/2 oz caster sugar
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence
115g/4oz chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 190°C/375°F/gas mark 5

Measure oats into a food processor or liquidiser. Whiz to a fine powder. Add flour, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder and salt and whizz to mix. Add grated chocolate (or throw the bar in and whiz again). Pour the dry ingredients into a bowl, while you cream the butter with both sugars. Beat the egg and vanilla together in a cup, and then beat into the creamed butter mixture. Then add chocolate chips, and dry ingredients, mix well. Roll into balls the size of ping-pong balls and place them 5cm apart on a baking tray. Cover the tray with non-stick baking paper, if you have that sort of tray.

Bake for about ten minutes. They should have a golden colour, but still look a little underdone (this is what makes the lovely chewy soft texture). If you like them crisp, keep them in a bit longer. But they won't be as good. Trust me, take them out sooner rather than later. Eat them while still warm, preferably in bed. Then start over again.

I posted my recipe a couple of days ago ,it is exactly like the big soft chewy supermarket ones
Let me see if I can do a link
its the chewy choc chip one

EmilyDavidson · 09/10/2007 09:15

gosh how amazing my link worked !

They are truly yummy and cost around a pound to make 18 ,but you must cook them on baking parchment so they dont stick on the tray

LilBloodRedWantsGore · 09/10/2007 09:16

Sound great - may have to make some

Tommy · 09/10/2007 09:17

Tommy · 09/10/2007 09:20

maltatheterrible · 09/10/2007 09:33

google for Phoebe's Fabulous chewy cookies - they are just like the supermarket ones, lovely and chewy. If you can't find, let me know and I'll post the recipe.

maltatheterrible · 09/10/2007 09:40

MamaG kindly linked me to your previous post for these KBear, they sound gorgeous

i will make them this afternoon, and also sockmonkeys ones, because she seems adamant that I should!

FloridaKbear · 09/10/2007 09:42

Ah, I have scrolled down and seen that! They are really good, never fail but watch when they're cooking that they don't overcook - keep an eye when they still look a bit soft then take them out as they will keep cooking for a bit on the tray.

Enjoy

Beelzebug · 09/10/2007 09:43

I made these yesterday and they were fantastic!
Guess you could add choc chips to them

By Pruni on Wed 06-Dec-06 09:24:13
300g sr flour
250g butter
30g cocoa
135g caster sugar

cream butter and sugar then add flour and cocoa. I kneaded it all together then rolled it out, and ds cut letter shapes. I rolled it into balls.

Cook at 170 C for 5 mins then 150 C for 15 to 20 mins until firm on top.

Soooooo good. I put in a bit of extra cocoa, 5 grams or so.

Tommy · 09/10/2007 09:46

those ones of Pruni's are yummy - but more shortbready than cookie I would say....
