What do people eat in Africa? (for Cubs meeting)

DS1 has to take food for 6 people from a continent of the leader's choice to his meeting on Weds.

He has got Africa, so I just wondered if anyone had any bright ideas? The children suggested a bowl of rice ( too much "you'd better eat this, people in Africa only have a bowl of rice all day" from me, methinks.)

I have been to Kenya once, 12 years ago, and recall best eating loads of fab fresh exotic fruit - less exotic here now, but still - fresh pineapple, papaya, mango etc. Would this be at all realistic? I'm not bothered about whether anyone eats it (I'm sure they won't) as I assume part of the idea is to get them to try new things.

Anyone got any more up-to-date thoughts than mine?

I've spent time working in Uganda and the main food that is eaten over there is something called matoke. Its made from plantains which are like green bannana. To make the matoke they boil them and them mush it up - it has the consistency of mashed potato and not much taste. Posho is the other staple food which is made from sweetcorn and is somehow turned into white tasteless mush.

Goat and fish are eaten by wealther people or on special occassions. The local school killed a goat in my honour when I taught there and I had to eat the intestines!

Sometimes potato, sweet potato or rice are eaten.

In the capital there would be a lot more choice for those that can afford it with cafes selling chips and burgers. I think there is a Nandos in Kampala but no McDonalds!
