What do people eat in Africa? (for Cubs meeting)

DS1 has to take food for 6 people from a continent of the leader's choice to his meeting on Weds.

He has got Africa, so I just wondered if anyone had any bright ideas? The children suggested a bowl of rice ( too much "you'd better eat this, people in Africa only have a bowl of rice all day" from me, methinks.)

I have been to Kenya once, 12 years ago, and recall best eating loads of fab fresh exotic fruit - less exotic here now, but still - fresh pineapple, papaya, mango etc. Would this be at all realistic? I'm not bothered about whether anyone eats it (I'm sure they won't) as I assume part of the idea is to get them to try new things.

Anyone got any more up-to-date thoughts than mine?

Well, I must say that it's a tall order. Africa is a massive continent. It entirely depends on what part of Africa they're talking about.

Any clues?

well morocco is in africa so you could take couscous in. that's fairly easy. can be hot or cold, mix veg or meat in, whatever you like. rather odd to select a huge continent, why not a country. i mean, what on earth will you pick for europe day? pasta? or roast beef? or a frankfurter?

MrsSeanSlater · 08/10/2007 23:43

Bit of a tricky one. As Desiderata said, it's a huge continent and the food in the north is massively different to the food in the south. i'd say pick a country (eg Kenya) and find out what that country eats and go from there.

ruddynorah · 08/10/2007 23:44

although i must say, my moroccan cousins' favourite meals seem to be frozen lasagnes

Desiderata · 08/10/2007 23:44

Aha! Newlife comes up with the goods! Pick a country and select the goods from there. What a great idea. Hopefully it will encourage the boys to try something new.

Happy reading, Clary. I hope all goes well!

thanks ladies, good link newlife. fab to see recipe for jollof rice as featured in Half of a Yellow Sun which I read recently.

I think others have got America, europe etc, I guess the idea is to bring sthg "typical" of the country rather than to epitomise it!

Will have a read. I have to cook this tomorrow evening. Can I take something hot to a Cubs meeting?
