How much do you spend on fruit and veg a week?

I go to a greengrocer once a week and it always costs between £15 and £20 and that's for me, dh and ds (2.4)

My friend was [shocked] and thought that seemed alot but I only buy what we need and don't throw much away.

so just wondered what people spend on average, I suspect there will be some who think thta's not a lot to spend I will have to worry about ds developing scurvy

10-15 EACH! But we are all healthy and it is better than having to shell out for pills and potions or crappy fortified junk.

fleacircus · 28/09/2007 11:34

We get a box delivered that costs about £14 and probably spend another £5-£10 topping that up. But there are only two of us at the moment!

NomDePlume · 28/09/2007 11:35

It sounds plenty to me, either that or you have a VERY expensive greengrocer.

You do realsie this will probably degenerate into a 'holier than thou' thread, don't you ?!

shrooms · 28/09/2007 11:38

Yeah - how much do you spend on pure fresh bottled local spring water each day....

Lorayn · 28/09/2007 11:39

I buy my fruit and veg from the supermarket, and we shop fortnightly, we probably spend about twenty pounds(ish) on it, thats the fresh stuff, we also buy quite a lot of tinned fruit though which is quite cheap as DC's like to have fruit cocktail and peach slices etc with cream for pudding.

Thing is shopping fortnightly we often run out of the fruit, and spend extra at the local shop during the week we dont shop, probably about another 5/10 pound.

pyjamagirl · 28/09/2007 11:39

20 - 25 pound per week
thats me dp and 5 dc

ConnorTraceptive · 28/09/2007 12:02

Lol. Nah - their little vegan tummies are used to it. Plus me and hubby are l.d. runners so probs get through more than the littluns!

Anna8888 · 28/09/2007 12:36

Probably about 60-70 euros a week - for me, partner, daughter and two stepsons (not here all the time).

But I buy lots of expensive fruit like melon and figs and cherry vine tomatoes.

NicknameRemovedByMN · 28/09/2007 13:29

Probably about £15 for 3 of us. Also have a veg plot from which we get quite a bit.

portonovo · 28/09/2007 13:30

Same as shrooms here, I reckon about £10-15 for each of us. Does vary a lot throughout the year though, at some times we have a lot of home-grown produce from our garden and allotment, other times we're more reliant on buying fruit and veg.

I just wish we could grow bananas (we do have banana plants though!) - we spend £10-15 a week on bananas alone...

TheQueenOfQuotes · 28/09/2007 13:32

about £10-15 for 4 of us.

3andnomore · 28/09/2007 13:38

I roughly spend £40-50 on F&v...I blame the 10/10 club on here ;)

3andnomore · 28/09/2007 13:39

oh that is for me, dh and 3 ds's

yaddayah · 28/09/2007 13:44

Grow lots (sweetcorn/potatoes/tomatoes/courgettes/runner beans/spring onions/strawberries/raspberries)As dh has an obbsession with buying organic compost I dread to think how much its cost us

Still manage to spend £20 a week at the supermarket

ConnorTraceptive · 28/09/2007 13:52

Would love to grow my own but must accept that it is not within my talents [sigh]

maisemor · 28/09/2007 13:55

£10-£15 a week (2 adults and 2 children).

MaeBee · 28/09/2007 13:57

we spend about 20 - 30 between me, dp and 1yr old boy. but we get Healthy Start vouchers cos we have some benefits, and we get an organic veg box, so that cuts the price loads.
and we grow herbs and tomatoes!

shrooms · 29/09/2007 11:10

Lovely growing your own. Wish I did. I think I will have to get a raised garden with good soil for growing things as the clay round here just isn't very yeilding.

lovey · 01/10/2007 17:35

£50+, as I am an organic freak and get through packets of grapes a day, not counting other fruit and veg! They are my, dh and dcs fave food....omg we sound like freaks, but actually we aren't!

nutcracker · 01/10/2007 17:37

Probably about £10 of my £50 a week shop is fruit and veg. Me and 3 dc's.

HonoriaGlossop · 01/10/2007 18:37

Connor I don't think that's alot. I'd say we spend about 20 - 30 quid a week on fruit and veg (usually spend about 60 - 70 quid on the whole shop) for two adults, one five yr old.

But DS is a total fruitbat, and I am a veg freak...I only buy one lot of meat, and one lot of fresh fish (though do buy tinned fish as well) so we probably spend less than other people in that area.

JARM · 01/10/2007 18:43

Probably £15 a week max.

Usually 2 bags of bananas, 2 bags of grapes, 1 bag of apples and 1 yellow melon fruit wise. The rest is tinned as the girls see it as a treat for pudding.

Veg wise, potatoes, mushrooms and peppers. The rest is frozen as we never use fresh quick enough before it goes off.

I now get Healthy Start vouchers though, so cost is dwinddling as we get 3x £2.80 vouchers a week until DB is born, then 4 vouchers a week until I start work or Jessi turns 4 whichever comes first.

jamila169 · 01/10/2007 23:47

We spend about £30 a week (me,OH,3 dc's) but we do get through about 7 pound bananas , 5 pound apples, 3 pound pears 10 - 15 pounds spuds, 3 cucumbers, about 2 pound toms , plus the odds and sods you pick up cos they look good , we don't really throw anything away either! DS1 gets some mighty funny looks at school when he pulls about 3 different fruit and veg out of his lunchbox!

Never worked it out but a freaking fortune for 6 of us. It bugs me that eating healthily costs so flaming much, whereas we could eat crap for half the price.

Rant over.
