How often do you food shop?

I always do one big shop for a month. After the first week all the fridge stuff is eaten as they have shorted dates so I’m thinking of swapping to a weekly or fortnightly shop so we always have stuff in the fridge, not just the freezer or cupboards.

How often do you do grocery shopping?

Pre covid - monthly delivery for: sparkling water, tonic, butter, milk, cleaning stuff, tins, ketchup, etc, and a week's fresh food. Weekly for food with a few tops ups.

Post covid. No delivery available so I do heavies and weekend food on Fridays. Rest of week food on Sundays. It's a pain in the bum.

OhTheRoses · 04/07/2020 22:32

Salad leaves/fruit bought on Sunday last through Thursday.

LittlemissAWOL · 04/07/2020 22:49

Once a week

thisstooshallpass · 05/07/2020 08:15

Once a week.

Skyliner001 · 05/07/2020 08:23

Once and then twice to top up pre- lockdown. Once in total now. Meals more organised, less being spent and less waste. It's a silver cloud lining.

FizzyPink · 05/07/2020 08:33

If you only go once a month what do you eat for the rest of the month once all the fresh food he run out?

I shop every Saturday for the week and still find by Thursday my veg is looking a bit sad

SoloMummy · 05/07/2020 09:19

Before covid I would do a big shop every 6-8 weeks on the cheaper shops like bnm, to buy the items that are significantly cheaper there, so everything from packed lunch box treats to loo roll. Then I'd do a supermarket shop 3 times a month, with very occasional pop to Local shop for bread in between, if needed.

Now and during covid, due to shielding, we have a fortnightly shop. It's costing significantly more than my previous spending and tbh, we've not got a particularly extravagant shop out of them!

mdh2020 · 05/07/2020 09:41

My husband used to shop at least 4 times a week visiting different shops. There are three of us at home and now we do an online shop from a supermarket every three weeks and we get a delivery of fresh fruit and veg around the same time. My husband hates online shopping and Really misses not stalking the supermarkets for bargains. I know that he feels as if he has lost control. I hate going shopping so the current situation really suits me.

nonamemummy · 05/07/2020 10:16

In my monthly online shop I would bulk buy fresh meat and freeze it and just take it out the day before I’m going to use it. I still have to go to coop every 2-3 days for bread/fruit/veg/milk

Exactly, you cannot make fresh food last a month, so in fact you do go shopping more than once a month as the co op is a supermarket for weekly top ups?

lazylinguist · 05/07/2020 12:23

In my monthly online shop I would bulk buy fresh meat and freeze it and just take it out the day before I’m going to use it.

What about fresh veg and fruit though? I shop once a week - I don't really see how anyone can go any less often than that and still eat fresh stuff!

lazylinguist · 05/07/2020 12:24

Oh ok - just saw that you actually go shopping every 2-3 days. Confused I don't really see the point of trying to do one shop a month if you keep having to top up.

Pipandmum · 05/07/2020 12:24

On e a week online delivery then top up with fresh stuff (veg, fruit, bread and milk mainly) once or twice during the week.

nonamemummy · 05/07/2020 12:51

Well I can get tins, big packs of meat, frozen foods, sauces, big bottles of drinks delivered then only have to pop in the shop quickly in the week to just grab a bottle of milk, loaf of bread and a bit of fruit/veg

For shopping every 2-3 weeks we eat the berries, bananas and most of the salad in the first week (tomatoes and cucumbers last longer), then in the second or third week we eat citrus fruit, apples, dried fruit or sometimes tinned fruit. Veg lasts 2 weeks or more in the fridge but we also eat frozen veg. In the second week we eat pita bread and dark rye bread. We don't have a car, no supermarket in walking distance and I didn't want to use the buses during the pandemic. We also wanted to minimise deliveries which were clearly in high demand...

YouJustDoYou · 05/07/2020 13:06

Family of 5 - 2 adults, 3 young children. One big shop a week and then a second end of week vegetable run.

Knowhowufeel2 · 05/07/2020 14:35

About once every 10-12 days and we don't top up inbetween. I just buy enough to last and find that our fruit/veg, etc, keeps really well.

Some items, like strawberries, are generally finished within the 1st 4-5 days, but we have enough other choices in the fridge not to miss them until I buy them again at the next shop.

HorseradishSnowflake · 05/07/2020 15:45

It's rare for us to go more than a day or two without buying some kind of food! 5 adults and a teenager all here due to lockdown. Nobody is eating out so with a normal fridge and no chest freezer I don't have the storage for a while weeks food. I plan 2/3 days ahead and find there is less waste this way as we tend to use up what we have on the 4th day before doing another proper shop. We are lucky because we live walking distance from a lovely high street so can support local traders.

vanillandhoney · 05/07/2020 15:47

Weekly online shops, plus the odd top-up if I need things like milk or a whole chicken for Sunday lunch (as you can't guarantee the dates online).

squeekums · 05/07/2020 15:54

Daily, we just never know what we will feel like

helia · 05/07/2020 15:59

I'm the same as @georgedawes - one Tesco online grocery shop a week now. I used to get top ups in the week - the odd thing from the local shop or a treat at the weekend - but not since lockdown started. I've taken to going to M&S to get some nicer bits once a month now that things have eased. That's not really essential but it's helping me manage some anxiety with going back into public places!

Deelish75 · 05/07/2020 15:59

Big online shop on a Saturday. Small midweek in store shop for bread, milk, fresh fruit and salad.

lazylinguist · 05/07/2020 16:27

Or you could get it all delivered once a week, including the fruit, veg, milk etc.

nonamemummy · 05/07/2020 19:35

@lazylinguist yes I did state in my original post that is what I’m thinking of doing

Now I do one shop a week, and don't need to buy any bits in between.
