Why is everyone picking on corn syrup and the USA? Melsy, you just missed a discussion about corn syrup here not too long ago.

melsy · 09/10/2004 18:52

How spooky there should be another convo on it, didnt even think to search convos !!

Aha so its the high fructose stuff then thats bad. I need it by Thursday, dont know were to get the regular light corn syrup, sounds quite nice if to put on pancakes!! I love maple/golden anything sugary really !! ssshhhhh dont tell the slimmers clubs , after my announcment today!!

OP posts:
colinsmommy · 09/10/2004 19:02

Its not maple or golden for sure. I am sending another MNer a package of American foods and including corn syrup in it, maybe I should just send a case to her for everyone who wants it.

If you want to make fun of American foods, pick on bread or chocolate, or any massed-produced yellowis-brown water such as Budweiser or Coors masquerading as beer. They really are disgraceful when compared to their European counterparts.

My lips are sealed, melsy.

melsy · 09/10/2004 19:07

Now theres an idea !

Not sure were to get american products here except Harrods !!

Were in USA r u ??

Southern Oregon. In a tiny town in the middle of a whole lotta trees. And I'll send anyone corn syrup in return for non-American chocolate.

melsy · 09/10/2004 19:13

Ok thats a deal , cant cost much to send choccies, they might keep them at customs though and eat them all !! What do you like ?? Im really into plain. is it the real handmade stuff you like or a HUGE slab of cadburys dairy milk ??

OP posts:
colinsmommy · 09/10/2004 19:16

Anything having to do with chocolate. But I think you would be getting the worse end of the deal on that trade, I'm afraid. I don't know if anything from around here would make it there by Thursday, but I guess it would have to, wouldn't it?

melsy · 09/10/2004 19:18

Im not sure it would and dont wnat to put any pressure on you to send it. What else could you throw in to make it fairer ,,hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I like Kraft marshmallow creame!!!!!!!

Corr I could have a feild day with chocolates from here.

You quite near CA?? Is it Lunch time there??

OP posts:
soapbox · 09/10/2004 19:21

Melsy - according to this site it is liquid glucose. You can get it from the chemist shop!

melsy · 09/10/2004 19:22

Ive got glucose powder , could I add that to water and boil to make a syrup ??

OP posts:
melsy · 09/10/2004 19:23

Good website that is , I often get recipes with USA products in.

OP posts:
colinsmommy · 09/10/2004 19:27

Corn syrup is fairly thick, thicker than golden syrup, and maple syrup. Glucose syrup is a pretty exact replacement, I bet, but you'd have to really really boil down the powder mixture to get the right consistency, I think.

colinsmommy · 09/10/2004 19:28

I'm really close to the CA border. Its 11:30 in the Am here.

And I'm absolutely sobbing that there is no equivalent to clotted cream.

melsy · 09/10/2004 19:29

Problem with boiling it soo much is that it will caramalise and change flavour, so may be not the right thing to do !!Thanx for that tip colinsmummy.Shame I was shown a little jar of glucose syrup in sainsburys today ,as no one knew what it was. Hopefully Waitrose will have it near me!

OP posts:
melsy · 09/10/2004 19:31

Clotted cream recipe Now all you have to do is get a guernsey cow LOL !!!!!!!!

OP posts:
colinsmommy · 09/10/2004 19:32

Great website, BTW, soapbox.

Too bad it didn't have an equivalent for Swede. Whenever I see someone mention that, I always picture a scandinavian in a pot. Not the prettiest of pictures.

melsy · 09/10/2004 19:34

To buy it in USA . Id send you some , but it may not be very good by the time it gets there, more like blue cream!!!

OP posts:
colinsmommy · 09/10/2004 19:34

There are many many cows around here, I just have to sneak in during the middle of the night to a nearby dairy, maybe. I found a place to get clotted cream here, but it is almost $12 for a teeny tiny little jar. When they do a "high tea" here, they just substitue whipping cream out of a can. I stopped going because of that.

colinsmommy · 09/10/2004 19:35

I love you I love you I love you, melsy.

colinsmommy · 09/10/2004 19:40

Sorry if I scared you Melsy, I just was really excited about the clotted cream. Clotted cream and Grand Marnier? Fattening and alcoholic at the same time!!!!!!!!!

melsy · 09/10/2004 19:41

I am most humbled by your thought

OOHHH no food snob here says in hoity british accent "that spray stuff will never do ,pnwah pnwah pnwah"!!!!! I really fancy a proper tea & scones somewere now !!!
